I LOVE Ryza but as a newcomer I was having a tough time understanding everything in the game. There’s not a whole lot of guides out there either. So I switched to Atelier Sophie 2 and I think it was an easier entry point into the series for me. I own all 3 Ryza games so I’m happily making my way through Sophie so I can eventually get to Ryza and hopefully be better prepared to handle it without feeling so confused. Thank you for sharing your love of this series. I’m so glad I found it. I enjoy it immensely but I wanted to feel like I wasn’t just gliding along not really understanding it. Finally someone that loves Atelier Lulua as much as I do! I totally agree with your rankings and have watched all your reviews on the Atelier series since you got me started on Lulua in 2019! Personally, I would say my absolute favourites are Atelier Lulua, Atelier Ryza 2, Atelier Firis and Atelier Shallie, with my least favourites being Atelier Sophie and Atelier Escha and Logy (I still have yet to play the newest releases of Sophie 2 and Atelier Ryza 3 due to business with school, as well as the Arland series as I am not 18 yet and there is an age restriction in Australia). Your reasoning is so well thought out and I love your channel because you bring more knowledge about the amazing Atelier series to the public! Seeing the notification for the video made me so happy and I can’t wait to see your reviews on Atelier in the future !

I also loved lulua and rank it nearly my favourite rpg of all time. Weird fact in Australia the ps3 versions of the arland trilogy are PG rated instead of R18+ and are often quite cheap.

Played the Atelier Iris series when I was a teen and now I'm getting back into some of these; going through Eternal Mana and Azoth of Destiny again and am just now realizing how successful, despite being so niche, the series has become. It's incredible and I never could have guessed it would have such longevity! I just picked up Ryza and plan to get the other 2 if I enjoy the first enough.

Atelier Shallie is my favourite I just loved the battle system, followed by Atelier Sophie. I don't know how many Final Fantasy games you've played but would like you see those ranked as there's a lot of them!

I startead with Rorona, Totori and Meruru. These remains my main games that I love. Awesome music, Rorona characters were not that great but Totori and Meruru are great. I don't know why I loved those games more, I think it was because I saw all the love and passion they put into the game, even if they were beginners.

Lulua will always surprise me as it was the Atelier game that I thought I wouldn’t like and it became one of my all-time favorite Atelier games! The character designs and environments are beautiful, the story is fantastic and I love the combat. Let’s not forget that the music is amazing! I’ll admit I did struggle with the alchemy at times and the post-game was tough but Lulua is close to a perfect Atelier game. ❤

I feel the other way around. I feel restricted a lot in rorona and escha and logy time management style where its structured. You cant get lost but you need to plan your schedule more. In other hand, totori and ayesha let you rush the story and get the tools to reduce time asap and let you explore more later, sure you can easily get lost in this style, but i think all you need is to focus on the main story first. Its just totori kinda sucks when it comes to ending if you want to get platinum trophy, not so much for other atelier game with time restrictions since there arent many missable evenrs or restrictions when it comes to ending. I can complete everything, minus endings in totori and ayesha in the first playthrough, including super bosses on hard mode without guide, but not with rorona and escha and logy.

Ryza 3 is slowly creeping up in my ranking. Loved Lulua and Sophie2. Surprisingly, had a great time with Rorona despite the difficulty. I wasn’t very good at it, but there was something charming about it that I enjoyed.

A Trails series ranking would be awesome. Definitely a series worth playing through. I'm still more of a Trails in the Sky fan than Trails of Cold Steel though. Sky had the best female protagonists I have ever come accrossed.

because trail didnt evolve so much, gameplay look same, monster too, map too while atelier you see big difference between game, difference between ryza 1 and ryza 3 is big

@vkobevk I don't think you've played the Trails series, or at least my experience, that there are differences between game to game. However, the thing about the Trails series is that it's an interconnected series and not a stand-alone disposable story, characters, or world with each iteration.

@@Strawhat_Pirates3D2Y plz it is same gameplay, same map, same graphic between cold steel 1 and reverie compare with ryza vs mysterious even in alrand they tried to be original with meruru when you have to build arld compare with cold steel in reverie you fighting in same map in crossbell, hemdalle, northern region, mishelam 90% your allies are same, 90% your opponant are still same, 90% monsters are same of course they will add some new maps, but the map stay the same it is like with neptunia same map, same monster, same protagonists, same gameplay, it is only since cyberdimension they radically change but in trail i didnt see major difference between cold steel 1 to reverie

@vkobevk You're comparing apples to oranges, my friend. Most JRPGs are modeled after Final Fantasy in the sense that it has to reinvent itself with each iteration. Only barrowing elements from prior entries and not that of an overarching approach. We live in a world where the Final Fantasy, Persona, Atelier(and so on..) approach to JRPGs runs rampant, and Trails(Falcom) strives to be different on the most fundamental level with interconnected and overarching stories, characters, and world. If you like disposable mechanics, stories, characters, or worlds, then good for you. The vast majority of JRPG fans don't have a vested interest in a much longer form approach to storytelling or world building, and that's ok. You can have your Final Fantasies, your cake and eat it too. That market is saturated with JRPGs of this ilk. Point is, there is no other experience within the JRPG market that can provide what the Trails series offers, and that's just the facts ma'am. Is Trails the best of the best? No. But, it provides a very much "new" and different experience than any of its competitors currently offer, on a scale that spans across 12 fully fleshed out games, 4 interconnected storyarcs, and counting.. there just simply is no comparison on this scale to even begin to do a cross comparison.

I played Rorona after finishing Ryza, which was my entry into the world of Atelier. Yes, it's a totally different style, especially the limited movements pit me off in the beginning. I read about the deadlines before so I was kind of prepared. In fact I really enjoyed them and when I eventually failed the first time I was so hooked that I immediately started over. And completed the game. ;) I should play the other titles as well. It was one of your reviews that made me buy Ryza, and since then I collected all Atelier titles available for the Switch. So yeah, looking forward to more ports and remasters. 😊

Sadly Ryza's gameplay didn't clicked for me... i had a hard time finishing the first one and didn't played the second or the third game. Maybe i should try them again. Lulua's was a total hit of nostalgia for me and made me cry with some OSTs and seeing Totori and Meruru again after all those years, my first atelier was Meruru and after that i played a lot of the games before Meruru's one and im in love with the franchise since the Meruru release. Is quite funny even when the games want to give you some waifus you end feeling more a friendship with the characters than a love interest.

Lydie and Suelle was my first and favorite game. It got me invested in the characters, so I had to play Firis and Sophie. So, Sophie 2 (while a great game) felt out of place, because it tried to act like noone outside of Sophie, Plachta, Ramizel, and Corneria (after the first 2 hours) really existed from the Mysterious trilogy. Firis and Lydie and Suelle did a good job about bringing up the previous games/locations/characters. Sophie 2 takes place in a world that has people from 1000s of years in the past, to 100 years in the future, and yet the only references to Firis or Lydie are the Bartender being from the institute in Firis, and the graveyard+abandoned building from the end of the Haunted Painting in Lydie and Suelle being in Illusion Vale (Abandoned Hall Landmark) (it could literally just be them reusing assets, as noone even references that area). It felt like they were trying to make Sophie 2 beginner friendly, while not realizing that having reasons to play the previous games is what made the previous Mysterious game so fantastic for beginners. I'm torn between low A and High B for Sophie 2 (also, if you can't tell: S for Lydie & Suelle, and Firis) Also, Ryza 2 is probaby my second favorite Atelier game. So fun

Honestly, your issues with Sophie 2 are pretty much the same as mine. I remember seeing they thought about maybe putting in an adult Firis but it felt too fan-fiction-esque so they didn't. Even so, I think there are characters in just Sophie 1 that could've been included. Maybe Harol's father or a younger Leon. As well as that, including minor characters like one of the licensed alchemists in Firis or maybe even Neige before she painted the Frozen Palace (though that might be too much) would've felt pretty fitting and have been cool to see. It just would've been nice since the game feels very disconnected from the rest of the trilogy, including even Sophie, the game it's supposed to be a direct sequel to.

@@chriskagamine358 I think Honnete could be cool, but I think it might be a little strange, since it would be weird that Sophie wouldn't know about her in Lydie & Suelle if she met her in Sophie 2. Same thing with Roger, who is someone else I thought would be cool in Sophie 2. It kind of has to be either a character Sophie has reason to never have interacted with in future games, like Norbert, Kirsche, or (maybe) Neige, or a character from the first Sophie.

It would be really cool to see a young Honnete, but it would just feel kind of peculiar that, if she knew Honnete, why would she never bring that up? That's kind of the problem with this game being slotted into the middle of a trilogy.

Ryza 1 was like i was part of the group of friends, because Ryza herself is such a bubbly personality. When the game ended i literally felt like i was back in my teens, a school year ended and i moved away not seeing any of the people ever again. Very sad.

I watched this and your entire collection video, have you played or heard of Mana Khemia for PS2, the series is kind of easy but it's isometric and interesting story wise for the main, I think. The style is less moe social, and more class like atmosphere with grades. It's very cool for 2D battles with sprites, check out boss videos online.

Honestly, I know almost nothing about the series, but I'm interested in playing one of these games on the Switch with my niece. Lulua is my favorite so I'm glad to see it in S tier. I loved everything about it except the music could be better. Following Lulua would be Sophie 2 and Ryza 2. I also love the Dusk trilogy and wish they would make a 4th game

I'm more of a Blue Reflection person. But I have finished Atelier Sophie, and I thought it was great. I tried getting into Atelier Firis afterwards, but not being able to explore the world at my own pace until passing the exam threw me off. Only 15 hours in, after passing the exam, I didn't feel like playing in anymore. It's such a shame really, because I consider it to be better in pretty much every other aspect. Feels reassuring that a lot of the games on the list are above Atelier Sophie though, I might need to check them out, especially the Ryza trilogy.

I love your content and reviews/overviews. We’re very different in our rankings lol 😂 but I respect your decisions. For me I really loved Mereru (though I can’t even get close to a good ending), and Firis and would put them higher. I adored the shop improving mechanic of Ryza 2 and the worlds + story but hated the compass dungeon puzzles for some reason (though alchemy was great) so I’d put it as an A with other games ranking higher. I need to play more of Shallie, Escha and Logy and Ayesha- the time limits scared me away even though I’ve played and enjoyed their other time limit games 😅. I agree about Lulua’s book system being very rewarding but I’d have put it lower as I only got super into it when perfecting my recipes. I liked the twins one but didn’t love it.

oh no you did dirty to my girls rorona and totori :( There's something about that sweet sweet ps3 gameplay combined with the fact fact that you can fail, that makes them so special. I've got a ps3 in my cabin innawoods where there's no internet at all, and i've spent some magical days grinding those games! Never got to the end of totori, but one day i will finish it! Go go Totori is my go to wake up song.

Meruru was the first one I played in the series and fell in love with them. My favourites are Ayesha and Totori, mostly because they have a more developed story line. I agree with rorona on D, same reason lineal, monotonous, kind of boring, but rorona plus, had an "after story "more instesting than the entire game. I think Sophie 1 should go on D, tedious music, Combat music felt like an opening for a kiddy morning show with puppets and people wearing overol I disagree with lulua, it was good, but I felt like a modern rorona Game. Ryza games are on my backlog.

Great list! Did you not play Nelke? I heard it's not like other Atelier games, but more of a city builder management sim. That might be right up my alley since the kingdom building aspect in Ni No Kuni 2 had me addicted. I recently started my Atelier journey with Firis, even though everyone told me not to start there and rather start with Sophie or Ryza. I have to say they were right, Firis is not a good first introduction to the series. And I had some trouble getting into it because I like taking my time exploring and crafting and the time limit freaks me out. But I enjoyed the postgame without time limit very much and I'll definitely play more of the series in the future. (Preferrably the ones without time limit)

Eh they still exist, only ryza crafting system that radically different than traditional atelier crafting system, the rest including arland are similar to each other. for me arland crafting system is my favorite simply because how straightforward it is, it only need like 120 quality and no mini games or catalyst. Also, arland series are far from hard and unforgiving, due to fixed difficulty, theyre actually one of the easier one, sure the time limit is stressing at first, but theyre not that hard. For me, dusk and mysterious trilogy are the hardest bunch in end game due to their artificial difficulty, you need to actually use a bunch of items and top tier gear and extensive knowledge to skills to actually complete dlc dungeon bosses in highest difficulty possible like charisma or legendary. But arland series? All you need is top tier gear and a few items and you're good to kick any bosses, it is hard alright, but not as convoluted as those 2 trilogy games in highest difficulty. Even Ryza series in legendary is freaking frustrating to complete.

If I was in charge of the atelier series, the next trilogy would use an alchemy system similar to Ryza, but go back to turnbased combat. The realtime battle system is my only complaint of the Ryza trilogy.

Much I love the flashy new look of the graphics in the Ryza series nothing quite beats Meruru for me. I'm happy if they just stick to pure turn based combat and keep the crafting insanely detailed. Meruru had an optional boss that took me so much effort to grind out the ingredients with the right traits and the move the traits to all the correct items to make my team godlike. I just loved that stuff (for the platinum trophy). It also had an element of building the city which was interesting change. Crafting seems to have become a bit "just sling in whatever and you'll be fine" now in the newest ones. Great video btw 😁

My personnal tier list would put Sophie 2 alone in S tier 😅 to me it was the perfect atelier (story, gameplay, characters wise). Even tho i enjoyed almost all of them. I didnt play ryza 3 yet, and i couldnt get into firis 😓 In a way that's a shame you didnt get into escha and logy that much, cuz i enjoyed it a ton and it was my first atelier plat. Lydie and Sue to me win the funniest atelier (close by Lulua which was also close to S tier in my opinion). That light thing you put around the TV, i love the idea that it matchs what's on the screen😮 Might buy it in the futur cuz i can't stand sun light on my tv so i mostly play in the dark 🙈

such underrated gems, there is no bad atelier game straight from Rorona to Ryza 3, My favorit char in the entire series is Mimi that appear melancholy in Totori and become badass in Meruru.

Atelier Annie on the ds is my favorite ds game of all time and one of my favorites in the series. Hope you can play it sometime! I'm playing the remake of Marie now never played the original and I love the style they did!

For me, Ayesha makes my top 5, but I think it came down to the characters, the music, and a journey to save her sister in a world on the verge of death. I just wish Shallie had given a slightly better end to that trilogy. Maybe it did on the later versions, but the ps3 version just kind of stopped after the final boss with a few lines saying something about slowing the end. As a result, Shallie falls a little lower. Escha and Logy was good as well for me and ranks only 1 lower than Ayesha. The battle system which allows for all 6 active party members to attack in one turn is quite something to pull off. Also the title plays into that whole end of the world thing. Eschatology - theology of the end of times. I am hoping for a 4th game in that sub series to conclude a few open ends. Note that I didn't play the re-release, only the ps3 versions, so I don't know what they did with Ayesha in Shallie.

I started with Ryza 1 and it was pretty good with a pretty good story. The grind is real though. Don't even bother with leveling beyond a point, improve your alchemy and quality of the ingredients. You can beat the final boss at lvk 30-40 if you have S tier equipments.

I agree with you about Ayesha being the best looking Atelier girl. I remember being drawn to it by its cover at a used games store, around 2014 before I knew anything about this series. I always looked at it and debated getting based on the cover alone, but even then Atelier games weren't "safe-to-try" priced, and I don't think they've ever been because of how niche they are. Today I only have a Switch and I feel more drawn to Sophie 2 than the Ryza games. I've seen it decently priced and it has the best user scores of any Atelier game. Was thinking of getting it once I clear some stuff on my backlog, but your rankings of Ryza really put me back on the fence. Harvest Moon is the reason I found your channel, so I hope you do end up making a Harvest Moon tier list.

I haven't played most of the newer ones (played a little bit of Lulua and maybe an hour of Ryza 1), but of all the Atelier games I played Ayesha was my favorite. The Iris and Mana Khemia games are interesting, too, but they are very different in style compared to everything from Rorona onwards, maybe give them a try someday. Also I'm really looking forward to the Marie remake. This one I'll definitely play as soon as my copy arrives. But then again it releases so close to the new Trails game....

Have you ever played Eternal Sonata? One of my favourite RPG's from the PS3 era. Still have my PS3 just to play that (and Lollipop Chainsaw😳) again some time. Would have liked a remake though, a game that truly deserves it. Captivating story, excellent soundtrack and great gameplay.

Was gonna ask if these games are similar to Eternal Sonata cuz gameplay wise they look like it. I've never played an Atelier game yet but have played and loved Eternal Sonata so if it's similar I'd def check out Atelier. Really wise ES had trophies.

I have played arland, dust, and mysterious except firis only early game, unpopular opinion but the first sophie is best for me and underrated, I like the atmosphere and music, it's also probably the most simple atelier game with the lack thing to do

Nice my favs are probably Escha and Lodgy, it just hooked me with is melancholy world, then Rorona for how simple and clean it is. Lydie and Suelle I jsut started but I do like that one too. Lulia I never tried because my friends hated it with a passion.

Ryza was my intro to the series, and the only other one I've played so far is Sophie 2. I want to put all four into my S tier even before I've played anything else 😅 The Ryza 3 mechanics felt kinda dumbed-down in some aspects, or overly RNG-dependent with finding keys with the right attributes, so maybe I'd drop that to A. But at the same time, it's so special seeing all those characters' arcs come to a bit of a conclusion. I do somewhat prefer the Sophie 2 alchemy & combat over Ryza, so I bet I'll enjoy the previous couple of trilogies. The time limits of the older games would drive me insane though.

Sophie is by far my favorite character, but I can understand putting the first game in C tier when compared to what came after it. Probably I wouldn't like Sophie 1 as much as I do if I just didn't love the character so much. Sophie 2 was excellent, though. I would put it higher than Ryza 1 & 3, but I agree Ryza 2 as a game is the best, even though Sophie is way more lovable than Ryza 🤪 I remember Lydie and Suelle feeling like total eye candy but also ended up being a little bored until Sophie showed up and saved the game 😅

That's kinda funny. I started with Atelier Rorona and Atelier Totori. Then I played Atelier Ayesha and started Atelier Escha & Logy but couldnt finish it, because didnt have the game anymore. Tbh I am kinda scared of starting the new ones, because I love the old ones so much. The characters are soooo different in the new parts. And I loved the multiple endings in the old games. I shipped Rorona with the knight dude Sterk and also got their ending. I also shipped Totori (Rorona's student) and her childhood friend (Sterks student). But I heard that you don't that kind of choice in the newer games. Everything just seems sooo different, that I am scared of using my money

Rorona is charming and doable at least the DX version but the post game is brutal because the game expects you to craft the best gear and you just waste time by looking for good ingredients with the right traits and you probably need a guide to learn how to do it. It stressed me out so much that I skipped the post game story. I'm also afraid of starting Totori because the time limits seem to be so strict and basically no one reaches the boat or whatever the good ending is on a blind playthrough and I don't wanna play games following a guide. It's not that motivating to me to start a game where you probably fail and get a bad ending after 30 hours. I know that these games have failures and replays in mind but it still scares me. I can understand why you put both games in the D tier. I might check out Meruru instead.

Ryza has it. One warning, just leveling up is useless. This is crafting focused game. Each level up increamental increase in the stats.

I started chronological. But i admit. For the first three Arland Games i activated cheats: One Billion Bucks, Full Fight Level. Otherwise you lose so often you can´t keep the timelines.
