As a Greek, we thought something similar after 2014. We had world class defenders in Manolas and Papastathopoulos. A Goalkeeper that starts in Seria A and winning Goalkeeper of the month awards. decent midfielders that played for Portuguese clubs and improving forwards like Athanasiadis and Mitroglou! We were a penalty shootout away from World Cup quarter finals! Well... . The same team was losing to Feroe Islands a few months later... . Home *and* away...

Bringing the daily Mourinho news to the Irish guy Many are not aware of this but before getting into football Mourinho was a teacher in his hometown Setubal. Teaching a mentally challenged class. He touched on that subject in the sky sports documentary " A day with Jose mourinho" when the sky sports team followed him for a day in his old neighborhood while he gave his thoughts on the beginnings and how the England press never valued his work . " I never chased anything. I see so many people talk about" Chasing the dream ". Of course I had the dream to get into football but I never chased it. I was just enjoying life doing things I loved to do . I was a high school teacher. That was my proper job. I was teaching kids with down syndrome and when I left my city to try my chance in football then it became serious stuff. And it has been serious stuff ever since. But I was always humble. I just demanded respect. When I arrived in England back then it was so rare to see a foreign manager arrive in the PL. Now all you need to coach in the PL is a British passport. In my time only 2 managers arrived that summer. Benitez who won la Liga and the Europa league with Valencia and Me who won 2 league titles. An Europa league and a champions league in 2 years. I never said I was the special one when I arrived . I said I was a special one because all the questions were " Are you good enough to manage in the Premier league?" and I thought " What?? I just won the champions league and you're treating me like I'm nobody? So I went in a agressive approach and I said" Hey I'm not one from the bottle I'm not one in the middle of 100. I just won the F champions league. I am a special one. " People say that I use to smile more and be more happy. I haven't changed but I was very hurt by the Manchester united experience. Man united was not easy. To win the Europa league with that squad and all the injuries we had felt like a great achievement and it didn't feel like it was one judging on the press. To get 2nd place in front of Conte's Chelsea and klopp's Liverpool was even a bigger achievement. And I felt like " Wow I'm working so much. I sacrifice so much. I'm getting the best result this club had since Sir Alex and I'm getting no respect whatsoever for it" By the way I would advise that documentary for anyone who haven't seen it. By far the best sky sports video there is.

Of course out of your 3 quality keepers you don't mention the one that's had the best personal season in Mark Travers at Bournemouth. While the other 2 are sitting on the bench next season for the top 2 he'll be the one continuing to get genuine experience. But still the strength in depth at GK for Ireland is pretty ridiculous when they can all still play for the under 23s Edit: Cashin looks like a great young CB should get picked up by a decent club when they unfortunately go down to league 1

Just for goalkeepers - ireland has a very strong lineup also with Travers at bournemouth - I do think Ireland has an exciting potential team, but it is potential. We will have to see what happens, but if I was Irish I would be excited.

They can win nothing with England if they want also with the added bonus of being abused by their own fans for doing so. It's up to them really.

@@barry4649 I wish all luck to the kid to do well but I've seen enough young talent and kid prospects be forgotten and not live up to their hype and potential to know that for the majority of these guys this will likely be the last time I hear their names let alone watch them play or win stuff, my bet at least 6 will end up in either the Greek, Indian or one of the Scandinavian leagues during their peak years

This is all reliant on young lads playing up to their potential let’s be honest half these players will end up in the lower flights of English football I mean I hope not I’d love to see the Ireland national team competing for international competition as someone who’s 1/2 Irish it would give me another team to cheer on if England go back to there regular international performances
