I'm Irish and this is the most shameful part of my history... Now often it's 'contextualized' as a problem with the church... It's so much worse than that... These women & children where first abandoned by the 'fathers' Then by their 'family' ( who where at times the 'father' ) and in turn their 'communities' After that, the church and state played their roll... The list of 'people' that failed them is long and dark... Of course all this 'wrongdoing' was compounded by the silence ...and that 'silence' is owned by a great number of my countrymen to this day!.

I sure hope all these people get some form of justice, but at least for now, this is out in the open. I was raised Catholic but renounced in my early 20s cause I saw many of those affiliated with the church using religion to justify and encourage many injustices and abuses. This is a small group but unfortunately it is a group that matters because they are the ones most people look to for guidance. It still shocks me what people are willing to do to each other if they have a religious belief that says they can treat others like this. I don't believe that any of those involved were even believers, just twisted people who used religion and the social norms of the times to abuse others. How can you possibly starve a baby to death and think you are going to get eternal life? Something like this can't go unpunished but with all the people involved in both the church and government I fear it may end up being a case where they issue a meager statement that they "made a mistake" but no actual apology will be issued nor will anyone be held accountable. They might scapegoat someone at the lower levels to make it appear as if they are taking some action....yeah, unfortunately I am pretty jaded....but I still hope they will get justice.

The high mortality rate for infants is shocking. Many of these children probably died because they failed to thrive due to neglect. It is scandalous that some children did not receive enough food. The fathers of the babies were never held responsible. The basic problem was a society that valued sanctimony over compassion.
@franziskani Жыл бұрын
In the first 2 - 3 months a mother has to breastfeed every 3 - 5 hours (also during night so she gets less sleep and they could not have the mothers in large sleeping rooms with 20 women or so, because the few with very small babies would constantly wake up the others). Sometimes the baby is not good at suckling or they are weak (then the invervalls for breastfeeding may be even shorter until they get stronger). There are beginners problems (sore nipples. milk fever, weak or clumsy baby, nervous mothers). So breastfeeding is time consuming and can be fickle especially for inexperienced mothers, it can take 30 minutes if the child drinks slowly, and the body of the woman releases Oxytocin the bonding hormon - which also makes the woman tired (she is supposed to rest and supposed to eat well). Even as the babies grow breastfeeding takes up time and the mothers cannot do work away from the home where the babies are, they have to be available every few hours. And it is not possible to feed the children with watered down milk from animals. Children older than 6 - 8 months might survive it - but it is not a good option. At all. But if they tried that (in order to get more work out of the mothers) of course that lead to more deaths. Bad for the digestion of the child, no immunity imparted by the antibodies and the vitamins the mother passes on with the milk, wrong ratio of fat, protein and the wrong kind of fats and proteins. And also hygienic problems. As long as the mother keeps her nipples clean her milk will always be safe to drink for the child and the milk has always the right temperature. Now - all of that time consuming but necessary care messes with the intent to exploit the women with long hours of forced labour. The baby suckling stimulates future and more ! milk production. if the women are not getting enough time to breastfeed or if the breaks are too long, their milk productionw will be reduced or even dry up. Likely this was a major factor in the malnutrition of the little ones and in the slow starvation. I also assume if a child was born disabled, premature, weak or if it cried a lot - they were singled out for starvation.
@OutragedPufferfish3 жыл бұрын
There was something similar in the Netherlands, unwed mothers were also sent to special homes to give birth, sometimes they were restrained and even blindfolded to prevent any bonding with the child, who was then put up for adoption. One woman later found out she'd been living in the same street as her son for years.

This is horrendous but the Catholics are still doing some of this stuff, My heart goes out who all who went throw these horrible things and the little souls who didn't make it. I was put in a home for catholic unwed mothers in Tx when I was 13 in 1981 after being rapped by my own father, We were left alone in our rooms 24/7 apart from when they delivered food to the rooms and when we had to see the DR, and we were not allowed to make friends with the other girls there. The girl in the room next to me would talk to me via a vent in the wall and she said I was lucky because I had pregnancy-induced diabetes, so I got better food than the other girls. Not long before I had the baby there was a night house mother and she would let us out to watch some TV each night but she was fired for being too softhearted. I went into labor and was knocked out in my bed in my room. I woke up the next day in the hospital having had a cesarean birth and they told me my baby boy died. I wasn't allowed to go back home I was just made homeless and left there at the hospital with nowhere to go. Much later in my 40s, my baby now an adult found me, Her adoptive parents had paid the catholic unwed mothers $25.000 dollars for my baby and I never signed the adoption papers. Ones I knew he didn't die I dug into it and found I had twins a boy and a girl and they broke them up and sold them to two families. So they made $50.000 dollars out of my pain. I cried in so much pain for my lost babies over the years, Even once I was married and had my only daughter with my marriage. The Catholic church is appalling. All the abuse, raps children, killed children, and mothers. disgraceful! This is why I want nothing to do with any religion.

They hypocrites of the Church has made me realize that all of this man-made religion is more about telling lies to control society. I do not believe in much of the Church belief anyway especially with communion. Sorry but a Priest praying over a piece of bread does not turn into Jesus body except in a in symbolic way and certainly not factual. I love how right at the beginning of the Bible that God only shows favor to one tribe and all the rest are unholy. Or that God made a promise land of just this one area when you have big huge Earth. Instead I see the Bible as stories of people who were trying to explain thing they did not have the knowledge we have today and that the detail are not what is important as much as why is the story being told. I mean does anyone in their right mind really think Noah could get a male and female of the 100's of millions of animal species in his lifetime let alone 40 days that are all over the world. I doubt you could do it today with 100 people helping. In fact it would be impossible because some animal can only live in certain habitat . A good example of that would be a koala bear because they can only fresh leave that only grow in Australia ( which is why you do not see them in zoos except in Australia) But I do see something like a man like Noah who kept losing his livestock every flood and has a dream to get and a male and female of the animals that are important in Noah world and put them on boat. Back then most people never traveled more then 100 miles from where they were born so Noah world would have been in a much smaller area then our knowledge we have today. But if you read the gospels the later the gospel from the time of Jesus's death the more miracles Jesus is written about . Umm! Yet so many people believe the Bible as word of complete facts. Well if you can gaslight people believing this stuff what else can you con people with.

They have made it very hard to get these records for Irish citizens, but I wonder if Americans who were born and adopted in the USA could sue to get them since we have different laws. Probably the best way for these people to find relatives is by doing a DNA test and put the result on these sites where you can see people past historical records. My Mom was adopted in the 1930 and was told the family were from Ireland but live in the USA for years. Well the agency never released the record for my Mom so she could find her other 9 siblings before my Mother died. However we did find my the family though DNA and one of my Mom sister is still alive. She was 8 when my mother was born and remember they were super poor and when her Mom or my birth Mom had triplets they just could not afford them. The parent demanded that all 3 children got adopted together, which did happen. My mother always knew she was adopted but she always wonder what her birth family looked like ect. Even as a grandchildren I wish I had the opportunity to meet some of these blood relatives before they died. However the other issue is some birth mothers do not want to be found. For example my cousin gave up her baby when she got pregnant at 15 years old ( actually her parent forced her to). One day, approximately 20 years latter, this young women just shows up at my cousin door and say she is her daughter she adopted out and that she got off easy and should be require to pay for her college.. Well the girl looks just like my cousin so no deny that.. However the problem was that when my cousin got pregnant it was like a family secret and my Aunt and Uncle shipped my cousin to another state to hide the pregnancy and have the baby.. My cousin brother and sisters did not even know she had a baby. My Aunt and Uncle at the time were probably thinking they were doing the right thing by hiding the pregnancy and keep my cousin good family name, but family secrets never go well. Fortunately once the child got off you owe me this ( when my cousin did not have the money anyway) they developed a good relationship now. But if you find your birth family understand they may not have the same thrill, when they first fine out. The other issue you need to watch out for is scams also.. At one time adoption paperwork was sealed. Then they open it up but both the birth family and adoptee had to be looking for each other and now I think they are open for adopted children and family after you file the paperwork and possible fee for the research and printing cost. But we cannot look, at history and see things in the same contents as today because we are doing some horrible thing today that we make excuse for all the time for and those who follow us will see us as either horrible people or people who were doing their best in the society they lived in at the time. Basically what happened in Ireland and GB the whole society allowed this to happen and if people are angry about they need to do more then have 20 people at a protest. Even the women family were part of this. Many women left these places and tried to go home only to have family members and neighbor send them back to these horrible places. Most of these women were required to do hard labor even though the government was paying money to the church to take care of the mothers and babies.

Please remember that they do not represent all catholic Christians. The way they have acted is completely un-Christian. They have broken three of the Ten Commandments, 1. Do not lie : they were covering up murder 2. Do not murder. (They were complicit in abuse) 3. Do not use the lords name in vain (doing evil deeds in the name of god).

The only shame and sin lies at the feet of the Catholic church!! And they dare to this day act as if they have done nothing wrong! This is just one of many atrocities the Catholic church has done against humanity!! I was raised Catholic, turned away from the Catholic church and found true Christianity. Gods message is love each other, not judge and shame anyone because let he without sin cast the first stone! I pray for these women that they find love and peace all the days of their lives.

Not to forget the willing collusion with the state. I wonder what would have happened if that inspector (mentioned in the video) would have dared to note that too many children died (even by comparsion with neglected kids raised in poor families). Or if he had drawn the obvious conclusion about John which was emaciated - but not because he could not or would not eat. As he noted, the boy was ravenous. Likely he also supported the opinion that the boy was "retarded" and agreed with the nuns to dispose of the child. They did not have to nerve to outright kill the children, but slow starvation also worked. And as long as the child was still (somewhat) alive the nuns got the payments for them (from the Irish state).

It happened in the United States to my mother in 1957 had a baby out of wedlock and went to a girls home for unwed mothers. I wish I had asked my mother before she died. What does she experience all although we don’t hear the terrifying stories in United States. I’m sure they were embarrassing just as horrific to the women, my mother got to keep her baby, but they did it back in the 50s off if you were to have your baby all around the world this was happening. Just so sad that it happened in parts of the country or the world that allow this to happen, but it was happening everywhere. That was the sign of the time then man I wish I had asked my mother and I wanna do the research off into mother homesfrom the United States great documentary

Put in a septic tank as if they were not human beings. For Gods sake they were babies what was going on in the heads of the Nuns and Priests ?I’m sure some of these Nuns will be in their old age today and should be put in prison for their crimes. Also the Irish Government should grow a set of balls and do the right thing and stop cruelty betraying all these women whose babies were taken from them. What was wrong with the men who were part of creating babies with the local women?. Were they saints?. Highly unlikely. In these homes they were starving the children and were left in filthy clothes and not fed properly and sexually abused. Balagan .
