The Knockeen dolmen up the road from me is from 3500BC. It's nice having such old monuments nearby

This was fascinating history of Newgrange. I was not familiar with Ireland's ancient sites. It's beautiful. I enjoyed this brief tour, Ariel.

Just found your channel. Newgrage is cool there is a definite energy about the place. There was a lot controversy surrounding the the maintenance of the facade but I like it. there are many other forts un excavated around ireland some may be older. They are now protected structures in law. But they were perseved by mith and legend. Called Fairy forts, and considered very unlucky most people avoided them. Halloween is coming close and is the festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in, sow as in a pig with piglets )and this is the night where the fairys can cross freely from their world to ours, to cause mischief. Its also the time of the harvest. Its an ancient celebration akin to Christmas lots of customs still in place today. The town of Athboy have the oldest Halloween tradition going back 3000 years and would love to participate some day very dramatic and with a large fire the first light of the new year.

Just reached the bit about the fairy's. My understanding is that unlike other cultures fairy's in ireland are considerd to be up to no good, the play tricks on people, but can also help you if your good to them, there not bad per say but if you leave them alone they will leave you alone and is probably for the best. These beliefs are still held to this day part of it is just tradition part of it is legend. One example in 1999 a Moterway was diverted by a few feet to avoid a fairy tree in co clare. That was all down to a local legend.

My understanding of these people were that they were mostly descended from the farmers who had moved their way across Europe from present day Turkey/ Levant area over a couple of thousand years or so picking up a bit of hunter gatherer DNA along the way, the next population wave to hit Ireland were The Beaker Culture, descended from the warlike Yamnaya metal age invader who moved fast across Europe on horseback from basically the Steppes of Russia/Ukraine and might have got to Ireland as early as 4500 years ago, about 700 years or so after Newgrange was built, largely but not completely 'replacing' these earlier settlers, and quite probably bringing the earliest proto Indo European language, which I imagine must have been the Celtic branch of the Indo European language family, so quite likely Proto Gaelic- though a true ancient linguistic expert would be able to expand and maybe give more clarity on that. This tallies with the genetic evidence at least anyway. I think the idea of The Celt coming to Ireland and bringing the Irish language to Ireland has become a fixed idea, especially within Ireland itself, and I don't doubt some tribes probably came over from present day France and Iberia, but it doesn't actually seem like there was the mass population replacement like there was with previous arrivals. So it's more likely that these newcomers added and influenced the existing Celtic language, rather than replacing it with their own, that influence I guess produced what is now known as Early Irish, but in reality there was probably a related Pre-Early Irish language already in existence long before the 'arrival' of The Celt.

Gobekli Tepe is much older than Newgrange, but it's not really a building per se.

Ah yes!! You’re right. It most likely is a building, I think they just haven’t excavated enough

Quite a few legends surrounding Newgrange from the palace of the Allfather Dagda(the good God) to 3 different myths of incest taking place there. Which is very interesting considering the recent discoveries.
