Newgrange is where the Story of Ireland starts: older than the pyramids, this 5,000 year old earth and stone structure in the Boyne Valley is celebrated for many extraordinary features including the elaborate decorative carvings, typified by the iconic triple spiral.
The engineers, who built the structure 5,000 years ago, designed it so that at sunrise on the shortest day of the year the first rays of sun would travel along the passage and light up the inner chamber.
Wild Goose visited Newgrange to find out more about the inspiration for the bronze Triple Spiral we make. We spoke to eminent archaeologist Elizabeth Shee Twohig and she told us about the care and precision involved in capturing this particular angle of light at Winter Solstice.
It’s clear that the shortest day held huge significance for our Neolithic ancestors. And now 5,000 years later, Christmas is widely regarded as our most important festival. While we can’t know what rituals and traditions were maintained by the civilisation that built Newgrange, we do know about some of the folkloric traditions that survived for centuries in rural Ireland.

I've been to Newgrange and for me you have to look at the entrance stone as a whole and it struck me it is a representation of the milky-way and as such once you pass this point to are going to the place where the soul goes after death. A lot of ancient people believed this and the milky-way was the most striking sight at night in an unpolluted sky. The triple spiral is a part of the whole and not meant to be seen in isolation. Just my hunch.

Newgrange and other similar structures are aligned with seasonal sun/moon events . Something I find interesting is that if you physically walk a spiral path, you face all four directions (Nth .East. Sth. West) and in doing so, you face the sun, then it's over your left shoulder, then it's on your back and then it's over your right shoulder. This repeats for every circuit till you reach the centre. Then you walk out and it repeats in reverse. An amazing/unsettling experience at first. I once observed an eagle ride a thermal in a tight spiral pattern, three times around anti clockwise, then three times clockwise. After its third clockwise round it flew directly in a southerly direction (southern hemisphere ). The connection I make is they all interact with nature. We have left nature behind for various reasons and I believe all the unanswered questions are rooted in (mother (earth) nature) the cosmos. Perhaps we need to look through Pagan eyes for the answers.

The loss of connection with nature a huge loss. I feel it. I don’t know what these three spiral mean. Perhaps magnetic pull and magnetic propulsion and some where in between humans have to choose

The duality of good vs evil..time, direction, choice...the 4 winds/Angels...polarity. the 2 paths.. Life/Death. The intersection of all things. Judgement by the source. In my opinion ( this far), I'd think both creation & destruction both occur In a spiraling of energy & I wouldn't be surprised if they flow in opposite directions .. Just a hunch 🤔

Pagan isn't a religion, it's a pejorative term used by city dwellers for rural people and their 'superstitions'. Neolithic Irish beliefs and ancient Roman beliefs couldn't be much further apart.

I know that the "spiral" symbol is an ancient symbol for the womb (burial mound, realm of the dead). So maybe having three of them is taking it a step further. 3 can be a sacred number. 3 times 3 = 9. It takes nine months for a child to be born from his mother's womb. Either way, I think it has to do with the realm of the dead, being the "womb" of the tribe. The place where memories, secrets and treasures are kept of the ancestors. Who knows. Good video nonetheless!

@karlbarlow8040

That is very interesting because I feel that they saw a symmetry in nature that we are born from a womb and must go out the same way. These passage tombs were the wombs of the earth and the bodies were placed in them until the midwinter sun cast it's beams ( sometimes the shadow of a Penis stone) along to fertilise the dead for birth into the next world. They were farmers and and saw how the sun brings life so it makes sense. This is why the passages are always narrow, to mirror the labour of birth. This als explains why the bones seem to get disturbed and dumped in some cases, because once the fertilisation takes place, the bones mean nothing, because the deceased has gone. Newgrange, for all it's grandeur, is the huge backside of mother nature, sticking out of the ground!

The Neolithic builders are remembered in Ireland's mythological genealogies, according to which the O'Driscoll are the most senior family of the Corcu Loigde, the clan of the chiefs of the Dairine tribe of the Eireann nation, descending in the male line from the legendary Dagda for whom Newgrange was built. The traditional date is in good agreement with the archaeological dating. The Y-DNA of a body found in Newgrange is I2a, which is rare in Ireland today but over 60% of O'Driscolls have it. PS: Not only is Christmas celebrated close to the northern winter solstice, there are other coincidences: the grave passage is cross-shaped. St Patrick would surely have known of the triple spiral when he used the trefoil clover as an explanation for the Trinity.

I am also in the I2a line, L-161.1, going back to those who first entered Ireland as the glaciers retreated. Back in 1989 I was in a circle of visitors in the main chamber of Brugh na Boyne*, facing the triple spiral on the back wall. The nice young guide was rattling on in a soft voice with a dialogue that could have been written by a conservative Catholic priest. I closed my eyes and suddenly found myself in a circle of white robed, hooded figures. I opened them & it was the circle of visitors. Closed them circle of white robes. Opened them circle of visitors. Then I closed my eyes again: coming down from the roof box was a column of brilliant white light in the center of the white robed figures. I looked down and saw I had a white robe and a pair of cloth like shoes. We were all humming ; "hooommm, hoooomm.", in a low deep chorus. Then I was shaken out of my chanting reverie by the guide as she gently touched my arm and whispered: "Sir, it's time to go." I was the only one left in the chamber. I shook my head a bit, took some deep breaths, and followed her down the passage to the blazing sunlight outside. I told no one for many years. And, Wild Geese: I have your triple spiral on my kitchen wall, as well as one I painted on a leather pouch that I wear on my belt, which I had worn since the 70's, unaware it was the same one on the back wall of that main chamber at *Newgrange. It's the God's honest truth. There are no coincidences. And if you don't believe me, that is not my problem. Love and Light. Grá agus Solas. Slán.

Terming the engraving on Newgrange's entrance stone a triple spiral seems rather wishful thinking since there are clearly 2 other spirals interwoven into the same pattern making a total of 5... with other similar, incomplete forms bordering them. Therefore, what basis is there to separate the one from the other when all are clearly part of the same work? Doing so seems like rather obvious confirmation bias to me - looking for a match and so neglecting to note that which isn't shared between the two examples.

The Newgrange triple spiral represents the family unit of father, mother and child. The child spiral is connected to the mother and father with an umbilical cord. The Irish returning spiral, itself, represents the spiritual power of the early Irish. It was and is a real power, not a mere artistic imagination.

The triple spiral... (along with the several other spirals) on the monolith at Newgrange looks like it started out as a double spiral and the third was added afterwards. The modern triple spiral cast in bronze is not of the same design as that on the monolith. Still, a cool, mysterious ancient symbol. Maybe they represent those that are buried there?

I found that the entrance stone has a straight line between the spirals. This means that the light wave comes from the sun. The triple spiral represents the wave movement. The straight line represents that the light coming from the sun, moves the spiral, which is a form of movement. In fact, they mean that light moves through space until it reaches the center. It also means that they control the light so that it moves towards the center. For my understand, this is the first idea to control the photons. Is like a technological way to control light to a path. Very like a Hadron Colisor. I know because in other monument called Loughcrew Equinox, has a comet passing near Earth. They did the first moving sun animation to show us that a box or an alien craft, or a huge planet passed near earth. People are misleading as they are saying about dead people, not they are doing science, showing us they control light to show us in future what they saw. One other ideia is that they are showing that something happen in the past, like a meteorite (Loughcrew Equinox), fell in the earth and caused a cataclism like tsunamis and the winter, that destroyied the Clovis peolple in North America. This places is related with Göbekli Tepe, and they are telling us that something pass near earth as is showing Loughcrew Equinox. In Göbekli Tepe they are showing the same idea. There are in the wall they show animals from pleistocene, that was extincted in a mass cataclism that extinct those animals, 10 to 6.000 Bc. They are showing us that a great cataclism. When I was in New Grange, a had a dream, after entered the tomb. I saw a man in white beard and white cloths, was a druid, he sayd to me: you will help people to see the truth. And I was in a big viking boat. Think this is not what you think, after a see the animation in Loughcrew Equinox, this opened my mind. Loughcrew Equinox is the key. That animation shows a comet or a planet that passed near by earth. Think they are alerting us.

If you know geometry, youd know that the Isle of Man flag is a 3 sided swastika but it is also the geometry of a 3 sided spiral. Spirals and swastikas are one and the same, like the yin yang that is a 2 sided swastika in terms of drawing it geometrically. Once you see them drawn with a fractal and a pencil you cant ever not see the geometry at play when looking at spirals and yin yangs and so on.

Same Neolithic triskele symbols found throughout Iberia. Likely influenced the idea of a sacred/divine ‘Trinity’ that is central to Celtic pagan religions (an idea that was subsequently appropriated by the Roman Church - despite its failure to conform to Christian scripture and the division this caused amongst early Christian sects - most likely as an overture to Celtic pagans by early evangelists).

Not unique to Ireland at all, Neolithic spiral symbols appear all over the Island of Malta in it's stone age temples which are said the date back some 7000 years. There was some type of connection throughout the neolithic period a lost knowledge which connected ancient people which should not have been able to have a connection.
