This made me tear up. I LOVE Irene Dunne! A beautiful voice and wonderful actress. So many of her films are my absolute favorites!

A Golden Age of Show Tunes! Irene Dunn played in the original 1936 film "Showboat" where the song :Birds gotta fly, fish gotta swim" & "Bill," & "Why do I love you?" were featured.

Thanks for posting this video. My grandmother loved Como in the 50s/60s. I thought she was square, but it turns out she had good taste. Perry was mocked by Second City in the 70s, and it's a shame his shows, which were probably all color from '58 on, are not regularly televised. Como was a milk-fed version of Dean Martin - and extremely talented. Ditto Dinah Shore and Andy Williams - NBC clearly looked for a 'type' for these variety shows. While they exhausted the great American songbook, it's been mostly lost among subsequent generations due to clearance and royalty issues, to the point that these songs are virtually unknown by the general public. It's great that some of it gets discovered by limited audiences on YT.

You're right. Like they did with OTR shows in the '70s, the FCC would do us a favor and just allow all variety shows to be public domain and be done with it already. It's ridiculous that these shows are wasting away in archives that no one has access to.

@@Bigbadwhitecracker Unfortunately there is no political constituency to get this done. I don't even think it's the FCC, but whatever Federal agency it is, they don't do anybody any favors without $$$.

What a treat! Thank you so much for sharing. Probably not a lot of video of Miss Dunne.

Those days are over but I loved the Irene Dunn version of Show Boat so much better than MGM’s version. MGM version was like a commercial except for Ava Gardner who I love.

I wonder why Irene Dunne wasn't chosen to play Liza Elliott in "Lady in the Dark." She would have been marvelous.

I agree that Irene Dunne would have been WONDERFUL. Yet I'm really glad that Gertrude Lawrence had the opportunity to create Liza.

@@showtunestarpower Me too. I guess I meant instead of Ginger Rogers in the film version. :)

Great. She also introduced "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" from Roberta with Astaire Rogers. She was in several great movies. Original Showboat the best imo with Helen Morgan and Paul Robeson

No. That was "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and "Yesterdays". "I Only Have Eyes For Your" was from a Dick Powell-Ruby Keeler film.

Yeah that would have been a much better show or show could have sung Only Make Believe and Why do I love you with Perry, which she did here but it was a horrid arrangement.
@Bigbadwhitecracker2 жыл бұрын
3:15 She didn't sing Bill. Helen Morgan did.
