I'm actually tearing up knowing that there's another species smart enough to not only be a smartass, but to be aware of it

There's a pair on KZbin and Tiktok who are pursuing a less scientific, but still amazing route with their own African Grey parrot, Apollo. They seem to use something similar to Dr. Pepperberg's model-rival method, but they've shown that you don't need to simplify the language - he will still answer "what's this made of" with the right answer rather than "what matter". Apollo also developed an interesting quirk - when met with the question of what something's made of, he will strike the object in question with his beak if he can't get his beak around it. This indicates (at least to me) that he associates a specific sound with a specific material - for example, he listens for a high "ting" when striking glass, a lower "tong" for metal, and a dull sound for rock. And as additional proof that Apollo can identify any kind of object whose name he knows - such as a bell - as that object rather than only responding to one specific instance, his two humans went to a thrift store to get new objects that Apollo had never seen before, and when presented with the new objects, he still identified them (and their other qualities such as color and material) correctly.

This video is really really surprising just to see how intelligent a parrot can be. Watching this actually touched my soul.

African Grey Parrots are probably the most cognitively intelligent species of parrots out there.
