Not all Greys are “talkers” so if you just want a talking bird you have to get one that’s already talking. I have 2 that needed a new home. Both birds are sweet but can be sassy. One talks up a storm but is afraid of strangers. The other hoots like an owl and has to be around people. Each bird is an individual. Both of them are really smart - they watch constantly & learn both good & bad behaviors. They’ve trained my spouse really well. There are days I really appreciate the quiet bird.

I think it's more common with dedicated owners of long-lived pets like parrots and turtles, since the potential for those pets to outlive their owners is commonly recognised. when people have pets with a 15 year life expectancy, it's common for them to not consider the possibility of dying that soon, but when you have a pet projected to live another 50-100 years, then the pet outliving you is an easy possibility for people to accept without being tied to accepting that they may die soon, which is a realisation most people try to avoid.

I have an Eclectus parrot, and he's amazing. Almost as smart as an African Grey, my boy (Kelvin) talks up a storm. He knows the context of words, and will try new things if she doesn't get what she wants. She imitates my voice so closely that my husband will think it's me talking. And we got him when he was little (he's 12 now), and I had a cough. He still coughs when I do, and will hiccups along with me. He's snugly, affectionate, and never bites. He lets me know what he's thinking, and will gently move my finger off his back if he doesn't want to be petted. I'd be lost without my boy. And he's plucked a lot, too. But you can't stop loving them.

They also grasp a lot more than people either pay attention to or refuse to address. I've met dozens of intelligent animals in my life, and I never found any animal to be "mindless". My friend called this person up (he's a friend of hers) & told him "Hey a-hole, my new puppy was up to no good and ripping something apart while I was asleep, and my 7yr old Doberman woke me up (she never wakes her) because she saw what he was up to...lead me to him and looked at him and back to me because she wanted me to know!" In his frustration, the husband yelled, "You old fart!," at the bird and THAT was the phrase the bird found interesting. So, for the remaining days, the couple were trying desperately to get the bird to stop yelling, "You old fart!" Art returned and the couple were terrified as they waited for the dreadful moment they knew was coming. Art entered the room where his beloved bird was, and as expected, it yelled, "You old fart!" Luckily, Art was hard of hearing, so he smiled, turned to the couple and said, "He said my name!" It’s not just that the bird knows all the words, it’s that the phrases are used in exactly the right context. Incredible

Cosmo lifts my spirits all the time. That coughing is hilarious! She’s such a comedian, and she knows it right? She’s a sweetie too. “I love her sooooo “ ❤️ Seems like there’s more and more videos with all kind of parrots these days. I didn’t realize how smart and entertaining they can be, and Coz is one of a kind. 😄

Cosmo is a beautiful bird and is very intelligent. Her vocabulary is amazing. She would be as much company for you as a dog simply cause she can communicate and entertain. Cosmo has an incredible gift, "empathy" which a lot of people are lacking these days. I would absolutely have a parrot as a pet if life circumstances were different. Beautiful bird !

I actually had just a little parakeet that talked up a storm...He was in a cage in our kitchen as a kit and he heard everything. Always talked about going to the store! Getting milk and bread, changing the tv channel, answer the phone, its for you dad! He was so sweet! And he loved to land on my dads beer can!

My older sister got a female Quaker juvenile as a form of therapy when going through very hard mental health issues as a teenager. Everyone including myself grew to love her sooo much and be amazed at how phenomenal those birds are! 😊❤

I had a female grey who also plucked. She, like Cosmo was very connected to me and my feelings. We never knew what new phrases were going to come from her. Sadly we lost her at the age if 21. She developed blood in her oviducts and by the time she started acting sick it was too late. It took us a good year to get over her death. We had had her from a baby.

Animals are insanely intelligent - wild and pets alike. It only takes us to interact with them to understand we have a common highly sophisticated language (much higher than the human-to-human language we use). I have discovered this whilst interacting with wild birds and rodents around my home - who would never let me touch them (which is exactly as intended), yet converse with us humans, share emotional energy and understand when we show them something new in the garden that they can investigate and figure out to their heart's content.

I was friends with a gray. He would make the sound of someone knocking at the door, and when the dogs would come running into the room barking, he would reprimand them by saying “bad dogs! Shut up!” He really enjoyed making me laugh aloud.

They’re so smart, they have been known to deceive their owners. Careful, if you’ve been gone for any length of time. They hold grudges and will loving lure you over for cuddles and then OUCH! Punish you. I know this is true because mine did just that. They will use your assumption that they are “just a bird” to their advantage. They watch EVERYTHING you do and they’re often one step ahead of you. So stay on your toes. You’re dealing with a brilliant and conniving little individual. Mostly, they just want to be loved and to love you back. ❤❤❤

I love watching bird videos and I'm envious of people who have them but I should've gotten one 30 years ago. I would always worry about who would take over for me. Cosmo was super lucky to land in this family's home. Very impressive how people with no bird experience stood up to the challenge. 👍🏼
