I remember selling loads of the Shadows Golden Greats. It was my Mum in the 60's that got me hooked on the Shadows sound along with Cliff. Hank is very true to life in your interview, very much how I have found him several times. Hank is the artist I have seen the most in my wide taste in music and I love his Gypsy Jazz work and his tutor Robin Nolan. Many Thanks.

Hank is largely to blame for the 150 guitars I have owned, but his style has given me over 40 years of playing enjoyment. One of the true greats!

Good to see a host of interesting items about Hank, the Shadows and Cliff on KZbin. They have always been there in my life and so nice that they are still making music and entertaining us. I hope there will be a big revival in playing and appreciating their music on radio and tv and maybe a future Glastonbury booking? Keep on playing and thanks for the pleasure they have given. Hank must have had to take austerity as a way of life. I find it a very heart warming story how cliff bought his first fender. I would just as soon as have asked why he hasn't ever mentioned eddy cochran and gene Vincent as influences but on the understanding he had neither TV nor record player or even a decent radio to write home about he literally had nothing and might not have known they even existed. When he appears to suggest good piano players are made from studying grades rankles me. When I took grades in school I didn't achieve good grades but a teacher kindly took the time to tell me how to count triplets and gave me a simple ish piece to learn so when it came to the end of year gala I managed to get a good reception. So to keep one's self occupied in front of a keyboard all one needs is learn to play a few flattened ninths in the right with a cautiius amount of rolling and crushing a steady rhythm in the left and you can improvise and interact and be in harmony with your natural environement at the same time learning the intro to Riders On The Storm I think you would need to be locked in a room for hours alone to be able to do that.

I recall standing out side dressing room of Wakefield theatre Club and was chatting to Hank, big thrill for me, he asked what I though of Don't Cry For Me Argentina as they had just started to ut it into the act, I said you need to record it and it will be a hit, he disagreed saying no too many done it we might out it on a album, I said yes many have done it but as a vocal your version is so different, result top 5 hit for them, I am sure that my chat wasn't the influence but I like to think it was.

The guitar solo in Living Doll was really great... and they didn't rate it... Hank has always been a closet 'jazz' player, although obviously not in the league of Django.

I Love watching good ol' Hank just taking it easy, having some gipsy jazz jam fun there somewhere. It's good he kinda backed away from the big audience. The old music i still have on many records and it will stay here and i will always enjoy it. It helped me through some of the most difficult and depressed parts of my life. Thankful for Hank, Bruce, Tony, Jet, Brian, John and of course Cliff as well. I think they took everything out of their lives for the music. But look around now; I'm 35 but people way younger than me still fancy to play Hank or sing Cliff and so on. As I'm not the most skilled guitar player, well... I play Shadows melody's along playing rhythm guitar. So i rather tend to kind of identify with Bruce. Though Bruce is amazingly skilled as well.

Saludos

@@IrenesGypsyJazzAdventures yes, i knew as well.... but mentioning that to some musician folks over here mostly gives me a response; "oh, well, not interested anymore then".... A big shame. Don't think he should be judged for what he believes in. I just appreciate Hank as a marvelous musician and well, a good guy. For example i would rate Cat Stevens about the same, even now he's called Yusuf Islam. I don't care about religion. I only care about if a person believes in the Good and what might be helpful to them personally and MAYBE to others.
