There is a lot of debate (well, perhaps some) regarding the tempo for the last movement of Beethoven's Appassionata Sonata. The marking is "Allegro ma non- troppo". To quote from the foremost expert on Beethoven, Donald Fransis Tovey, "This movement is often taken too fast. Beethoven is rather sparing of the warning 'ma non troppo' and it occurs more often in later than in earlier works. It is therefore not a warning that should be neglected." Most pianists (as is the case here) prefer to take a faster tempo, as it does create a rather exciting rendition, which is preferred by the general public. However, a more authoritative reading of this movement requires a slower tempo. You may want to contrast this interpretation with that of either Arthur Schabel or Anton Kuerti to explore how tempi that are more in keeping with Beethoven's markings have a profoundly different outcome/effect. In the end, we are blessed with having so many different approaches to such a great work. Otherwise, the musical world would be rather boring if everyone plaid masterworks exactly the same way.

Maybe I am wrong but I had the impression that the acoustic of the hall was not fitting this Sonata & may have disturbed the artist. Too much marble or stones around the piano gave sometimes a sound too bright, especially in the 3rd movement. Nothwistanding Ms Lankova managed to play very well. She showed to be a pianist of great class.

thank you, the acoustique of a church is often difficult for piano, but this particular place is unbelievably inspiring..
