Talk to anyone about why they're struggling to learn Finnish and you'll hear a variety of reasons. As someone who has struggled myself and has also helped others overcome this struggle, I have a slightly different take on why we struggle, and how we can re-frame the issue to overcome it.

I have no words to say how much I thank you. I've been learning Finnish for 10 years with my ups and downs, but for the last couple of years it's been one really deep hole... You illustrated this perfectly with that "crossing the river", I've been feeling this way for so long and I have no idea what to do. I dream about speaking Finnish fluently, but it's just like a giant failure... It's so heart-warming to know it's not only me struggling. I'm gonna try and try, and try till it finally clicks. Thank you so much, greetings from Poland ❤

So glad the message came at this time @Ilmatar! Little signs and signals pointing towards your own, unique path of least resistance - the ups, downs, the holes, too, absolutely belong.

Hi! I’ve been learning Finnish for about 4 years now and it felt like the easiest journey of learning a language. I’ve been also learning French in school for about 8 years and I’m still unable to speak fluently without having to think of what I want to say. So I have learned much more Finnish in 4 years than French in 8 years. My explanation for that is: I was ”forced” to learn French without really being interested. And my interest for the Finnish language was very big. For sure I had some struggles (and I still have) but I always saw a progression which gave me the motivation to learn more. Instead looking at the grammar and being lost, I saw it more as a discovery, which was very interesting. Now I still struggle with some parts of the grammar, but those aren’t as important because I am still understood. The most important is that you can speak freely without translating in your brain. And of course being able to interact with other people. I really like your videos, continue with that! Greetings from Switzerland!

After living in Finland for 3 years and studying Finnish intensively for about a year, and STILL unable to form a single sentence correctly, I'm seeking to either move to Sweden or Norway or burying myself in the tiny Swedish speaking areas of Finland. I'm sinking into the river and the idea of escaping to an area where they speak a much easier language is the only way for me to live be accepted in basically my favourite par of the world...

Speaking Swedish in Finland does have some advantages professionally. Most Finns don't want to speak it. There's pros & cons.
