Irish people are very informal. You don't have to make special arrangements to visit. We're delighted to see you. Come as you are. You don't need to bring anything. In practice, I usually bring a packet of bikkies (biscuits) when I visit a friend - to go with the coffee that I'm going to be offered.🤗 There's probably a practical reason why there is no particular Irish tradition of bringing gifts. In my lifetime, many people were poor - very poor. Not everyone could afford to buy gifts (some had difficulty affording food). It was far more important that you brought yourself. Also, there _is_ a tradition of dropping in unannounced. When I was a child, a lovely neighbour frequently visited. He used to open the front door, shout 'God bless all here', and walk straight in! He never brought gifts but he always brought stories. If it was a 'true' ghost story, we would huddle around the fire and the lights were always switched off ... for that extra creepy effect. Ireland has changed dramatically in a relatively short period of time.

This is very cool! Much less stress :) I usually have to make sure I go to the shop, buy something and that takes a lot of time and energy! :) Good idea about biscuits. Will do it myself whenever we can visit people again.

Actually, some Irish people would be quite offended if you showed up with a large cake or something like that. They'd be thinking something like "Does s/he think we don't have enough food in the house?" or "Do they think we're poor?"

In relation to Irish people not being direct it's important to remember also that this is linked with Irish people not willing to criticise people behind their backs. You have to realise that Ireland is a very small country. People also mix a lot and take part in their community activities, particularly sport. That means that people know each other and may also know a lot of people in common. Add in family into the mix you have to be careful of offending people inadvertently. Irish people who meet each other anywhere in the world will usually know, or perhaps even be related to, each other. There's no need to be direct and perhaps consequently offensive. It's a lot easier to advise of other ways of doing things.

Sorry for all of the comments I'm sure there will be more, I wanted to remark at 40:20 i am in California and it is the opposite in America, if someone comes to your house it is polite to offer them something to eat or drink. But I submit that us Americans do have strange ways on more than a few occasions.
@AMEditionYT4 жыл бұрын
No worries about the comments! I love reading them😊😊 It's interesting to see that we all can be so different in the little things. I was talking to people here and they said it was a common thing to bring a lil gift when visiting someone in the past. Now gifts seem to be offered only during big events. 😊 I think it's good to know to avoid any misunderstanding. Hope to visist California one day!

When you say “bring presents“ probably just means to bring some thing like a bottle of wine,nine times out of 10, that would go with whatever you will be eating. Other options are casseroles, coleslaw‘s, desserts, etc.… However, this is in the US specifically… It just sounds a lot like the tradition that we have here when people are invited for dinner or thr like type visit. #PROTIPSBYANGELYOUREWELCOMR 😁

If you think you know the Irish character in any way then you know nothing the Irish are very complex what you see on the outside is nothing like what's going on in the inside ,Freud said the Irish are the only race of people that can't be Psycho analysed ,it's a lot to do with centuries of been told you are no better than an animal in your own country by English ruling classes and been out worldly civil to these people but hating them and yourself for what they are doing to you and your people it's very complex ,if you want to know the Irish you have to learn Irish history and understand it .

Anamaria, one thing that I was wondering about is as you are from Moldava which is not in the EEC. I figured that you probably obtained a Romanian passport. Can Moldavans obtain Romanian passports. Also as you speak Russian , I presume it is because of the large Russian presnce and influence in Moldava as you do not have any slavic features , I suppose that you are of Romanian/ Moldavan bloodline, although I know many Russians, Poles , and other slavic speaking countries do not have any slavic features. Please do not think that I am being personal or inquisitive , just a friendly comment to which no reply is necessary. Personally I believe the more passports one has the better. It used to make for easier travelling , but now with such security and border controls etc. I am not so sure. Take care taspad

Hi! :) Thanks for your comment. It's very fine. I really like reading them! :) You're right, Moldova is not the European Union, however, Moldova and Romania was one country in the past, so we share the same language, but the history in the past few hundred years differ a bit. Also the citizens of Moldova can make Romanian passports without any problems and this is what the majority of the population does.
