How many octave does your wooden flute have is it the same as the metal flute because I can play 4 octave on my metal flute but I would like to know because I'm interested in buying a 5 key or a 6 key so I can learn it maybe you can teach me all the octave 🤔I'm very curious. Thank you.

I literally just started playing the Irish flute (as in, I started yesterday), & I've gathered that it's easier for me to play with my head joint turned away from me slightly. I have really long fingers, so by turning the head joint away, it's easier for me to comfortably wrap my hands around the flute.

No I haven't had the chance. Irish flutes seem to be very rare instruments, and there are not many sessions in my actual surroundings. But I've heard good things of irish based michael Chronnolly's flutes (m&e), be it polymer or wood, and I did not buy without a careful online study. Sometimes you just have to blame your body, that only time can teach. A few days later and my embouchure works already a tad better!

Hi OAIM. I've been practicing for a month now, and things are going forward. I followed your beginner course, + some tips from elsewhere. This is not my first instrument, but it is refreshing to have everything to learn. My embouchure is obviously better, even though I need consistent warming up before being able to produce every note of the d scale. As far as my experience's concerned, getting the second octave was the key to a stronger low range. On the negative side, my embouchure is still pretty inconsistent, I have weak stamina with breathing (even from the belly), and practicing the physically less demanding tin whistle (like I've done for a year) seems to mess a bit more with my breath, both sound and stamina-wise.

Hi thanks for your video. I'm looking to buy a wooden flute, but I don't really know what to go for. I have played the standard silver concert flute for years but I love the haunting sound of the wooden flutes. Also I'd like to buy an antique one. Is there any advice you could give me? What to avoid, names of good histoical makers? Thanks.
@onlineacademyofirishmusic8 жыл бұрын
Hi, Glad you liked the video. I'm not sure what to suggest as the quality of instruments vary considerably.
@Galleitch7 жыл бұрын
Antique flutes are lovely, but they do add an extra layer of uncertainty unless you get them from a source that can really stand behind them, and this is expensive. My thought - as a beginner myself - is that the best route in is with one of the excellent "budget" flutes - Hammy Hamilton's "practice" flute, or slightly more expensive but better looking M&E six hole flute. As a "transferee" you'll be learning a new style of embouchure and tone, and you are probably better off learning that before dropping a large sum of money on something precious before you learn what works for you in this style. A minor point if you do go looking at antique instruments is to remember that many are not built to play at A=440 and many that can do so only manage it by compromise.

You can get Irish flutes like this made new. Mullan Flutes makes a keyless version for a very reasonable price. Most traditional Celtic music does not call for use of keys, though you will need a few notes obtained by cross-fingering.

Hi! I have Abrsm grade 8 in recorder (treble, keg of f and descant, key of c). Do you think it will be fairly easy for me to learn Irish flute or hard to adjust from my current training? Would love any advice. Thanks, Flo x
@onlineacademyofirishmusic5 жыл бұрын
Hi Flo, apologies for this delayed reply. The big difference is embouchure. It does take a while to get the pitch and tone of the notes clear. It's a beautiful instrument and well worth giving a good go . Do you have a flute?
@tomgreene65794 жыл бұрын
The fingering is different and the embouchure...try and develop a loose embouchure that has some flexibility otherwise tone colour between and within your octaves may be limited. Watch this lady carefully produce the first sound and see her lip movement on the first note as the sound tapers...practice this daily and often , starting with the headjoint alone...long notes tapered ...soft ..loud ...soft....best of luck!

This video has corrected some problems I've had for many years of playing. I pretty much gave up on the flute in favour of the penny whistle. Main problem was using the tongue hold the bottom lip against the flute. That meant I could not define my notes as well as I would like. I used the back of the tongue to define the notes and it kind of worked but not always. very interesting about the 'turning in' too. I had always wondered about doing that. I do have one question though. I don't use the keys at all but the one key right at the bottom is right where I wold put my little finger which I tend to put on the bridge of the key. Any suggestions how else I might avoid that key without butchering the flute?
@onlineacademyofirishmusic10 жыл бұрын
Hi Master Webbe - Is your flute a 3 piece instrument? If so, you should be able to turn the foot piece so that the key is not in the way of the pinky. I also find it obstructive and unless I need to use it in a tune, I have it turned away.
@masterwebbe368310 жыл бұрын
irishmusicacademy Thanks for the reply. Mine is a George Ormiston 'D' flute in three parts. I'll trying turning it a little further away. I never use it and it does affect handling. I'll watch your other videos. Is there a good jig/reel generic backing track that can be adjusted for speed somewhere? A fairly simple beat would do. I tend to play trickier parts a little quicker when learning and it affects the overall sound.

Thanks for the reply. I'm looking forward to the backing tracks and I think others will too. I'm too shy to play in public but I'm continually told I should do so. I once sat in at the back of a session and played along in obscurity. They heard/spotted me and they stopped playing so I was playing solo for a few seconds before my self consciousness dried up the breath. Sounds pathetic I know. I can play about thirty jigs and reels now but lack the experience of playing with others. Thanks for helping.

Good lesson, thank you. I can play the classical western flute. I bought a traditional Irish flute for some diversity. I cannot, no matter what I try, get a sound out of it. How does the Irish Flute differ from the traverso?
@onlineacademyofirishmusic5 жыл бұрын
Hi Buddy, Irish flutes are traverse flutes. Do you play flute?
@buddycollier50565 жыл бұрын
Online Academy of Irish Music Yes, I have been playing for approximately four years now. I picked up the instrument later in life after teaching music for many years. My music reading skills are fine. It was learning the embouchure that challenged me. The other day an acquaintance came by the house and brought an Irish flute for me to try. I noticed that the foot joint narrowed more than my two traversos (traversi?) do. The Aperture was similar. Her flute projected it’s sound with more energy and it was easier to overblown into the next harmonic. My traverso has an E-flat key and her Irish Flute did not. I thought mine was a bit more mellow sounding...the word warbling comes to mind.

Hi, Nice Video, On your right hand do you cover holes with 1st joint finger pads or second joint pads, I get better sound with 1st joint ,but using the second joint may help with speed and ornaments, and tone may improve over time Do you think it's worth investing the time to use the second joint pads? Thanks Much

are irish flute notes same as bagpipes?

Hi Diane, I'm not 100% sure about your question. Are you referring to the fingering? If so, it's not the same.. Let me know if that answers your question. Kirsten :)

I haven't really been able to track down any Irish Flutes for a decent price. It looks like most are either PVC pipe flutes or extreme high end flutes. Are PVC pipes good? Are there any cheap alternatives? I don't want to lay down serious cash for something that I might not continue pursuing for the rest of my life.

@@onlineacademyofirishmusic thank you! I'll certainly be looking into some flutes, but one more question (sorry I have a tendency to ask a lot of questions) would it be better or easier if I started off with a normal flute and then and Irish flute?
@onlineacademyofirishmusic5 жыл бұрын
It's fine to start on a wooden flute and you would gain zero advantage by starting on a silver one. They are quite different to play. Wooden flutes are the original instruments with the silver being developed only in the last century.

Hi Peter, There are many choices when buying a flute, that depend on many factors. If you're a beginner, I wouldn't go straight for the Grinter. Steph's flute probably cost €5K+.. There are great beginner options from ~ €400+. Let me know if you want more info and at what level you are playing and I'll put something together. I'm sure most makers post their flutes.
