As a 21 year veteran fireman from a university town PENN STATE {one of, if not the, top party schools in the USA}. . . I LOVE the Long Island Ice Tea. My favorite way to drink it? by the pitcher! I think most bars are watering down the drink when it’s ordered to prevent a drunken 🥴 patron and to boost sales. Some of the more upscale and corporate bars in my area are not allowed to serve the drink because management won’t permit them to serve it.

Long Island is my go-to drink. It is the real test of a good bar or bartender. Here in the US, bars take short cuts. They do not use simple syrup and lime , but instead use a generic sour mixer, so they mostly taste the same. The BEST one I ever drank had a secret ingredient that took me a long time to figure out - grapefruit juice. A splash or more grapefruit juice adds so much complexity to the taste.

Good to see you trying the L.I.I.T. It is one of my favourite drinks. The recipe here in Australia more commonly uses standard vodka rather than vanilla. Also the juice normally used is lemon rather than lime and is an equal portion to the boozy components. The one thing that confuses me is the inclusion of the Simple Syrup. I have had these at more than a dozen different establishments and none of them have included sugar syrup, the Cointreau and the Coke/cola seem to be enough sweetness. After five Long Islands in an evening I decided to “walk” from the bar/restaurant to Sydney Central Railway station, about a mile and a half through some of Sydney’s least friendly streets at 3am on a Saturday morning. When I woke up in the morning I was the proud owner of a very nice knife that I hadn’t seen before and can’t remember where it came from.

The recipe most of the really cheap bars here in the Midwest use a bottle of pre-mixed Triple Sec, Tequila, Vodka, Gin, and White Rum. They then mix that with an equal part of Sweet & Sour Mix (essentially just very very strong lemonade). They then top it off with a bit of Coke, just like you did. The nicer bars make it like how you make it (but without vanilla in the vodka), but they still add about a shot of sweet and sour mix to dilute it. I think it really helps balance it out.

Everyone was drinking them like it was a regular ice tea soft drink, at the beach on the island. Everybody at the inn was decked and mopping the floors with themselves. It's exactly like you said. Long Island Ice Tea drinkers always have stories. I'll never forget my first one at the inn. Never used a recipe with vanilla vodka or lime juice. Have always used straight absolut , lemon juice (so it tastes exacly like iced tea) and the rest coke. Been mixing them ever since for friends, family and coworkers at afterwork parties. Always fun to see peoples reactions when trying it for the first time. I made a "Double Dose" once for the person that came late to my after work party at home. He caught up to the others and passed them by after just one of those. Still tasted just like ised tea. Great to see you show everyone all the ingredients and that it's not hard to make.

A woman with that wonderful accent you can listen to all day even if she recites the phonebook that can drink you under the table (I know I can't hold my liquor sadly) is a deadly combination.

I love Long Islands! I ordered one recently and it didn’t have any coke in it. It was so nasty that I actually sent it back and got a margarita, my second go-to drink. It’s a amazing how that one non-alcoholic ingredient changes the flavor completely.

My first Long island was in Memphis Tennessee, the bar served them in buckets with straws. Yes, buckets. Two straws, but no one used the second straw. I'm also surprised I still have a functioning liver.

There's a tasty, citrusy, and blue variation to the Long Island called an "Adios, Motherfucker", or a "Walk Me Down" for those not gutsy enough tp order it by it's real name. Blue Curacao replaces the Triple Sec, Sweet and Sour Mix replaces the Sour Mix (or lime juice), and Sprite or 7Up replaces the Cola. Recipe- 1/2 ounce vodka 1/2 ounce rum 1/2 ounce tequila 1/2 ounce gin 1/2 ounce blue curaçao 2 ounces sweet-and-sour mix Lemon-Lime soda to taste!

Had to make a lot of these in my last job, the reason they're far weaker in most (though legally in the UK/Ireland) is because each shot is 10ml or up to 14ml to stay in line with a the double measure rule with a maximum of up to 70ml being allowed to be served (35ml rule doubled up). I used to make these with 25ml per shot but it is very easy way to end up face down in the bar haha!

I make mine in an German Hefeweizen glass. It's a taller glass that will take a little more then .5 ltr. So you can get a full tea out of it! But then again, I drink Jack Stacks. Jack Stack is a drink made for the US Soldiers when Schweinfurt Germany was open. Hefeweizen, 3 ice cubes, pour Jack Daniels till the .5 mark. Fill to top with coke (or splash) Sooo good!!

Long island iced teas used to be my go-to cocktail till I discovered strawberry Long island iced teas. You just replace the cola with the strawberry liqueur and 20 of sweet and sour and some sliced up strawberries and a whole strawberry for the rim. It's a delicious and what I like to call cheerful drink

I find that having one with a little more citrus juice in it reeeeeeeeeally covers up the alcohol. The more lemon, the more dangerous in my experience.

OH......I have had a night with the Long Island Iced tea!!! I was at a convention a few years back. The bar that we went to had $3 Long Island Iced Tea Specials. So I had 6 or 7. I vaguely remember stumbling back to my hotel room that night/morning..... I had to pick up a couple friends for the drive back home around 9am......HUNGOVER!! Fun night, not the best choice, but fun night.

The only cocktail I’ve had that is boozier is the Black Orchid, a signature drink from a private goth club. Not sure what’s in it but it tastes a lot like a grape soda and knocks you on your butt.

You do it so well. When I was young, 80s, my buddy Dan and I would go on surf trips and mix LIIT’s in gallon jugs in the back of his BMW Trunk. What was left over from the weekend we would stash in the refrigerator at work and sip on it for the next week. Oh those were the day’s.

Been drinking these since I could drink. Over the course of unending quarantines I got tired of mixing it one at a time. Eventually I just kept making it in an 1.75L bottle. 325ml each liquor and topped it off with 100ml everclear. Now I just drink absinthe. Didn't know which one was good at first, now I have my favorites.

@Quintinohthree3 жыл бұрын
@@telluricman Depends how you define stronger. The Smuggler's Cove version is a daiquiri with lemon juice and passion fruit syrup scaled up by 2, not really stronger, just more. Their Zombie on the other hand is 4 ounces of rum, 1 of which being overproof, against just 1 3/4 ounce, 1 teaspoon and 2 dashes of mixers, and those dashes are Angostura bitters and absinthe, both over 40%, while 1/2 ounce is falernum, also about 11%. However you define stronger, the Zombie certainly is.

I started drinking long islands on long island and woke up the next morning in new jersey wearing nothing but a pair of wet shorts. Plus, it was only 56 degrees outside and i was still hammered. Good times. I miss those good old days. Lol

When I was stationed in California with the marines, I played softball for a local bar/club. After games we'd go to the bar and have a few drinks. If we won, we'd get a pitcher of Long Island Iced Tea on the house. If we lost, we only got a glass. Now that's incentive to win! I also have a really good pic of the bartender making a drink, with 2 bottles in each hand as he pours.

If you are eating a spicy meal, Mexican or Indian, a long island iced tea with extra bitters/sours really goes well with the meal. Most of the time that I have seen them being made, the mixoligist usually tips a small amount out and adds a bit more cola to the glass, it makes it a darker caramel color and adds to the illiusion of it being a simple ice tea.

LIIT is my favourite cocktail. I remember staying at a hotel for a work conference once, and wanted one. The bar only sold spirits by the double measure - so I ended up with 10 measures in a pint glass, and with all the ice, there wasnt much room for the cola... I remember being told the next day I got totally hammered that night!

In the USA, restaurants are only allowed to serve a certain amount of alcohol per drink (I think I remember 20 years ago it was like 2 shots?), so that explains why it is more potent than ones you've had before. I've had homemade ones sit me on my behind!

Hey Ciara! This does indeed look great. My personal Long Island I make at work (I manage a bar in Australia) is slightly different. I fill a tall curved glass half way with ice, throw in a lime and lemon slice in the middle, and top with ice. I build with 15 ml Cointreau, 15 ml Triple Sec, 15 ml Gin, 15 ml silver Tequila, 15 ml Bacardi white rum, and 30 ml Vodka. I add a dash of lime cordial and top with Coke. Give it a try, I'm sure you'll love it!
