Vic & Bob were doing parodies of the 70's in things like 'Slade in Residence' years before 'That 70's Show'. We also had 'Life on Mars' which was part sci-fi, part drama, part nostalgia, which worked well. Britain has had some great late night talk shows through the years, Jonathan Ross in his heyday was great - this list felt a bit recent-centric. Also, whenever we talk about the great US cartoons of the 90's, I'm noticing a propensity to say 'Simpsons... South Park' and to not say 'Ren & Stimpy' because of the controversy of John K. I'll say it loud and proud because it mattered at the time: *Ren & Stimpy!* For a decent adult-oriented UK cartoon - 'Monkey Dust'.

One thing we never copied was ad breaks every 7 or 8 minutes and at least 4 minutes long, every 12 - 15 and 3 minutes long or less is bad enough, particularly when RTÉ show ads and collects the license fee. Diane, Las Vegas would be a good place to visit. It is a much shorter flight for me, only 1 hour, 38 minutes direct flight....I have flown out there a couple times, for concerts! I went to see Alanis Morsiette for the first time, after listening to her since 1995 -- I graduated high school in 1996! -- and then I went to see Lady Gaga Jazz and Piano, a show where Lady Gaga did acoustic versions of many of her songs as well as classic jazz songs. 🙂 I don't drink at all (can't stand the taste, don't want to get drunk) and I don't gamble, but there was still plenty to do there! Miniature golf, arcades, indoor ropes courses, etc! A lot of trump followers go there thinking it is their kind of town, but it's actually as liberal as we are in the San Francisco Bay Area. They haven't voted for a Republican for President in decades (although the surrounding state of Nevada is a red state). That motto "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" isn't exactly socially conservative, after all! 🙂

The US had political debates since the 1960s?! Nixon-Kennedy had 2 debates the next televised presidential debate was in 1976. Non-televised debates go back centuries in the US most notably the Constitutional convention and the Lincoln -Douglas debates in 1858 that were without any direct impact since direct election to the US Senate wasn't a thing until the early 1900s. If you want to experience something like Black Friday, go shopping in an American Chinatown on a weekend. Little old ladies will elbow you out of the way. People don't queue, they mob. Chaos is the norm. Somehow it all works, though. People get what they want without anyone being injured. I don't know why the video focused on British copies of American TV shows. Many American shows have been copies of (or inspired by) British shows. All in the Family, Sanford and Son, The Office, Veep, Ghosts, Three's Company, Shameless, The X Factor, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Hell's Kitchen, MasterChef were all based on British shows. There's a lot more legal gambling in the U.S. than there used to be. Indian casinos have popped up everywhere, and almost every state has a lottery now. Las Vegas has had to rebrand itself as a big amusement park, not just a gambler's paradise.
