I asked a group of American guys and also a group of Irish guys what they thought of Irish Girls and what they thought of American girls. The stereotypes are MIGHTY but also some interesting cultural ibservations to be made. Let me know your thoughts on Irish Vs American Girl Stereotypes and if you want to see me try a male version.

High maintenance usually means that the woman has very high demands for material things. It can include cars, type of home, high end clothing, etc. they do not care about the cost involved in maintaining that lifestyle. It's about a social status to them

As an American, I agree with this answer the most. Time women spend on their appearance can also be included, but that time typically is associated with a monetary value. Examples: "she spent 3 hours at the salon" or "she goes to the tanning bed 4 days a week" or "the shampoo she bought was $50 for a pint size bottle"

Saying a girl is “high maintenance” in America basically means *expensive* for the man. She expects/demands high end food/clothes/etc in order to remain happy. Only rich guys are ok with dating high maintenance women I generally think about that term as a put-down. Like calling someone shallow or selfish.
@TotallydrivenTV

I don't see it as just about money. When I think high-maintenance for a male or female I think what they kids call "extra". Like... having a quiet night at home watching Netflix is never going to happen, or the kind of significant other who needs constant text updates or gets really angry when you hang out with your friends, I guess money plays a huge part but there's other things as well, IMO anyway

When I married my wife she was low maintenance but once I started making more money she became very high maintenance. It takes a whole staff of make up artists, hair stylist, hair colorist, blow dry specialist as well as an army of dermatologists and other doctors to make her look good for herself. Now she has to have a new fancy new foreign cars to drive, a no limit budget for purses, shoes, jewelry, clothes and multiple exotic vacations at only the most expensive hotels. We also have on daughter who I love dearly but was raised from birth to be high maintenance. I will never be able to retire because my maintenance costs are so high!

“High maintenance” refers to how much money a girl spends on things like make-up, hair, nails, new clothes, massages, etc. Some girls don’t spend that much on such item each month and they would be termed “low maintenance”. Those that go for weekly manicures & pedicures and hair appointments, buy lots of new clothes, got to have the newest of everything etc are called “high maintenance”.

From my perspective, American women are harder to categorize because the country is so big. Women from the northeast are very different from women in the south and both are different from women on the west coast. Your “American women are better groomed” goes hand in hand with “American women are high maintenance”. In America “high maintenance” women tend to spend a lot more time and money on clothing and cosmetics, including things like Botox or other cosmetic procedures through a doctor. They are more of the “me, look at me, pay me attention” culture, especially the younger crowd. Not me, I’m to old for that, different generation. Remember, this is just my observational opinion.

We have hollywood and fashion shoved in our faces from a young age. Magazines just tell you how to fix things you didn't even know needed to be fixed only to make you end up hating yourself even more. That's why teens in america have such a high rate of self harm and eating disorders. So we feed into this culture we didn't realise until it's too late only to be labeled fake or high maintenance when it's our cultural society that pressures us into it in the first place. I've worked jobs where I was required to have my nails manicured, hair done and makeup along with wear what ever clothes were trending. And that was just clothing stores.

"High maintenance" is a euphemism for "difficult and demanding." "Low maintenance" is a euphemism for "easygoing." Re fake tan, realize that its heyday in America was 20 years ago. It has since become a cliche and now is frowned upon. Whereas the "pale pasty potato" look is actually in here; it's considered exotic and sexy. The grooming move for a pale-skinned woman in America now is not to get a tan - it's to stay pale (or even wear powder) and dye her hair red like Christina Hendricks or Jessica Chastain.

In regards to taking a compliment: I used to have a really difficult time doing that until I had a boyfriend say that when you discount a compliment from someone it offends them. As if you were telling them they don't have very good taste. It was uncomfortable at first but I did learn to just start saying thank you after a while and leaving it there

High maintenance is more than just attentiveness, it's being financially, emotionally, psychologically, physically, and otherwise taxingly drained with a huge dose of drama to round it all off with. It's like being owned, and not in a fun way.

The needing attention is definitely part of maintenance, but I've always thought of high maintenance as including the paying for all dates, gifts on holidays and for random reasons, and all the drama. Since you specifically mentioned that splitting the bill on dates, that moves Irish women into the lower maintenance sphere.

I'm an old American guy. I've been married for what seems like forever, but when I was single, I always believed that a date consisted of a guest and a host. Whoever asked the other one out is the host. The host pays for the date. If the guy asks the girl out, he's the host and he pays. If she asks him out, she's the host and she pays. If the situation as degenerated into a "relationship", then sharing expenses is right and proper.

This is the way I see it, too. If I ask a girl out, it'd be rude to make her pay for herself. If I'd invited her to my house for dinner (my standard second date idea), I wouldn't expect her to bring her own food. Men like to do and buy things for women. We express interest and affection by providing things. Let us.

I think "high maintenance" means two things: 1) that they do more about their appearance and public image (fussing over their makeup and clothes, caring what others think about them, etc) and 2) that they require more from their partners -- not just attention, but also they want their partners to be fashionable and respectable, too. In general, a low maintenance person accepts things as they are and a high maintenance person has elaborate plans to improve things and draws their partner into these plans. Anyway, that's my impression.

What I think high maintenance means; it means you got to do a lot to keep up your looks (manicures, pedicures, lashes, waxing, botox, fat freezing, laser hair removal, facials, haircuts, hair extensions, hair dyeing, hair masks, not to mention all the skincare and makeup) idk is it just me😂

high maintenance means: needs hair done, nails done, fancy shoes, lots of fancy make up, lots of expensive shoes and clothes, never see her without fully being done up / Low maintenance means: doesn't need much, happy the way they are, wears little to no make up, wears sneakers, can be fancy but generally isn't everyday

"American vs Irish Men" video? Yes, please. 2:35 "Potato body," says the Irish girl. 😂 "High maintenance" vs "low maintenance" - Dating some women is a full-time job. It's not just _paying attention,_ it's a constant requirement to provide affirmation, reassurance, and reinforcement. It's also a spectrum: rather than a binary: "higher" vs "lower" rather than "high" vs "low" maintenance.. 8:30 American women don't merely _hold_ grudges, they caress and fondle and cherish and *nurture* their grudges. If you seriously piss an American woman off, *she will never forget.* In my experience.

I can only comment on the experience that I've had. I have only met one Irish woman, and it was in a workplace setting. I found her to be very shy, but once we connected (as friends) she was a very faithful and attentive friend. Even then, I found it difficult to tell if she was, say having a bad day or if there was some way to comfort and encourage her through a bad day. She seemed more interested in what was going on with me, then she was talking about what was going on with her.

My definition of high maintenance. Wearing makeup all the time, having your hair done, and dressing up all the time. No slack days (wearing sweatpants while eating a bag of chips and ice cream on the couch). Expecting the best shoes, cloths, makeup, etc as gifts. Ecpecting the best of everything all the time.

I think, I THINK, the "high maintenance" one and the "takes compliments" one are linked. I COULD be wrong, probably am, but from what I have encountered, American women require more assurance in regards their looks, weight, hair, attire, where as Irish women SEEM to see such compliments as more, "Okay, what are you after? What do you want, complimenting me?"

Diane may I start off by saying, #6 I love the videos you make, and Chewie is a BLAST. Speaking for myself on paying for everything on a date. That is the way I was raised. The man always pays. I just came across your channel today and have watched a few of them. So part of this post will also be for previous videos. When the scare is lifted and we can all go back to a semi-normal life. Please do plan to come back to America. IF you do stop in North Carolina we can show you around and even take you skydiving if you want. When you do decide to come back let us all know on your site and then say the following... "Where should I go and Why?" You will find a lot of people here willing to help and play tour guide for you. Something to think about. Great Videos and keep up the good work.

I think a bunch of these relate to one another. Being "body conscious" "high maintenance" and "well groomed" (and having better teeth) are all related. To a large extent, all of these things relate to being more concerned about outward appearance and how we are perceived by others. Having a more "high maintenance" attitude, will generally lead to spending more time, energy, and money on grooming, makeup, clothing, fitness, etc.

An interesting comparison would be between Irish and Irish-American differences. Although most of my Dad’s side remained in Ireland, my direct ancestors arrived between 1868 and 1893... So they passed down their experiences, while the family in Ireland adapted to their own experiences. It was fun when my Irish cousins visited and we could compare the differences. Many things considered “Irish” here are actually Irish-American adaptations.

In America, a woman being "high maintenance" refers to her expecting to go to more expensive restaurants, gifts are expected to be higher valued (usually classier), she'll expect the man to drive a nicer more expensive vehicle, often she'll expect Broadway shows instead of movies/Cinema ... And if the two of you get engaged she will expect a very classy/expensive wedding followed by an expensive (very good neighborhood) home ... (Forget hamburgers or hotdogs)
