Royal Irish Regiment, it is one of the two Irish regiments remaining in the British Army.The Irish Guards recruit in Northern Ireland and the Irish neighbourhoods of major British cities. Restrictions in the Republic of Ireland's .make it illegal to induce, procure or persuade enlistment of any citizen of the Republic of Ireland into the military of another state,however people from that country do enlist in the regiment.Nowadays they recruit from all around United Kingdom and Commonwealth

There are many Irish, even republicans in the South, who also still feel they are also British. Not politically but culturally. Just because one is a loyal and patriotic Irish citizen does not mean one denies history or hates their neighbours who share the British Isles with them! One can love both Ireland and her sisters. I would never concede one inch of Irish independence but I can still admire and respect the Queen and cherish the many good historical and present ties that bind us.

And you get a name-check in the song, as it's based on the main character (a Highwayman) having a run-in with British army officer Captain Farrell! Local highwaymen holding up English landlords were considered national heroes in 17th century Ireland, so marching to this tune in the British army of today just shows how far we have come.

They are truly elite soldiers. They are also the only regiment in the Brit Army that, upon returning from a campaign is allowed to go to church (mass) before reporting to the Queen. This stipulation was written into the agreement when the unit was formed. It is a traditionally Irish Catholic regiment.

The Queen mother was the honorary Commandant of the Black Watch regiment. Upon her death The Black Watch could not provide the Honor Guard for her Funeral. (They are not a Guards Regiment.) They asked the Irish Guards to provide the Honor Guard for her funeral and the Procession. The Guards stood in for them at the funeral.
@MrScall35
@MrScall35 7 жыл бұрын
The Irish Guards were always the choice for the Queen Mother's funeral procession. She had no official appointment to them but they were her favourite. She called them her soldiers, her boys, such was her affinity to the regiment.

When does the 2d tune begin during this clip...at 1:33? Also, what rank or position is the man with came under his who appears a couple times near edge of screen at about 1:32? I notice that the berets appear to be of both green and a more olive it brown color in the same regiment. Is that due to different roles, specialties or do my eyes deceive me? And right at the end of the formation there's a segment of soldiers wearing much darker uniforms than the rest. Just curious. Thx.

@Alec MacCnaimhin - which country hates them? Not England. Many of us acknowledge the contribution given by the Irish in fighting the French (tho' they also fought for them), then the Germans. It may confuse us as to why given our history. Some of us English are aware of what our Government did in Ireland but when someone fights beside us & is killed there is a grieving mother somewhere & that we can understand.

They do not serve to protect us throughout the length and breadth of the island of Ireland, that is an insult. And the name of the 26 counties is Ireland, not Eire in English. Show some respect. You are the only one showing immature sectarianism here. Its the equivalent of me refusing to call the UK by its proper name. Its like me using England for the Uk as a while. It does not comprise of people from Ireland (ROI) officially. It comprises of those who of their own accord chose to join. The same as many join the French Foreign Legion for example. They join as individuals, not representing their country, hence why use Ireland's name is inappropriate and its culture.

No, we can't! The Republic of Ireland exists and has done so for an awfully long time and its offensive to me as an Irish man that Great Britain parades a Battalion they call "Irish Gaurds". Even an Irish wolfhound as mascot?? Not to mention the invasion which resulted in 600,000 deaths (UN Report 2012), mostly innocent Iraqi men, women and children. Its a disgrace. Honour that apalling vista if you want but dont do it under the claim of having "Irish Gaurds" participate in it. We didn't.
