My mother's name was Norah O'Donnell daughter of John O'Donnell from South Queensferry Scotland, and she always told us the story about being related to the Royal line Red Hugh now after visiting Kinsale I was taken aback her the stories were correct.

I enjoyed learning much about Red Hugh and the Irish culture of his time. I learned that the Irish were considered pirates and smuggkers merely for trading with any country besides England and that was definitely enlightening! He is considered a hero for the cause of his country and the Church. Pro Dei et Patria. I heard the comment on the Church of his day looking at his claim as a Cheiftain askance because it predated the Christianity there. That wouldn't cause the Church alarm per se. Roman Emperors were considered a god before Constantine, but the Church never doubted Constantine's right to rule had a Divine element in it and didn't ask him or his sucessors to change their title just to move away from the old superstition here. There would not have been a problem with the Pre-Christian mythical elements of the Irish recorded and honored in their book, provided they were not demonic, like human sacrifice, which was obviously not in practice for hundreds of years at this time in Ireland. It is due to the Church that we know the ancient Greek and Roman myths, as well, as she saved this knowledge from barbarian invaders and her monks copied these texts for further generations. The Catholic Church doesn't see everything as pagan=bad, Christian=good; that was more of a Protestant idea. Nor was their any "apostolic line" of kings. Clovis was the first Frankish king recognized by the Church with a right to rule and Charlamagne was not his ancestor. You see, the Divine Right of Kings theory arose not from the Church, but by those who supported their monarchs right to do whatever in the name of God, something the Church did not believe. The Church had been present at many a Coronation, but also at times declared a monarch no longer fit to rule. This was actually the point of contention Elizabeth I had with Catholics; the Pope had declared that her Catholic subjects did not owe her loyalty of any kind since she claimed to be the head of the Anglican church. So, you see, if the Catholic Church would have had an issue with the right of Irish chieftainships it would have been forthcoming on such a charge. No such problem actually existed.

Red Hugh started the war and after he died the war soon ended. My mother's name was O'Donnell and Red Hugh's Scottish mother was important to the story as well. She was a MacDonald and here nickname according to Wikipedia meant 'dark daughter'. She paved the way for Hugh to get the title of The O'Donnell and helped him to dominate the North once he had it. Red Hugh I built the castle and Monastery and Red Hugh destroyed them. Greatest Irish rebel in history that we know of.

Red Hugh wasn't an Earl, Rory his Brother was the First Earl of Tyrconnell and was the man that was involved in the Flight Of The Earls. Red Hugh unfortunately after losing the battle of Kinsale went back to Spain to ask the King for more help against the English Invaders. He died in Spain shortly after arriving, not Rome were Rory is currently buried alongside Hugh O'Neil's Son. Interestingly the English removed the Earldom from Rory after he died so his son was the second earl of Tyrconnell.

I am a descent of the O'Donnels of County Mayo and have visited a manor house that they owned which is now a luxury hotel. Newport House. I am of the Australian branch of that tree. Niall of the Nine Hostages is also an ancestor. Niall has changed to Neil or Neal down the ages and my great great grandfather was Neal O'Donnell son of the baronet Neal O'Donnell of Newport House.

My distant Grandfather was part of the O'Donnell clan, Irish Nobility. He ventured from Spain to Mexico-California as a sea Captain then settled in Santa Barbara. When the U.S. won the Mexican war, my family had to give their land rights to the state and process into Philadelphia. The distant Grandfather or his son fought in the U.S. civil war as an Army Captain. I only know about post Spain era. I was always told by my grandmother that the British forced our family to Spain. I received the Sir name of Riley from a separate family. Riley, came in from the potato famine. But, The Harkin side always made me feel as if I came from Kings, Neil O'Donnell decent.

Red Hugh was Chieftain not an Earl He was the last Chieftain his brother became the first Earl.

I am a decendant of Calvagh O'Donnell. Seems he is decendant of different high kings of Ireland. He is aslo a decendant of Roger Mortimer and also Llewellyn the great. Hard to wrap your mind it sometimes.
