I'm from Canada and I'm in my 50's. I remember when I was young they used to show The Hurling Championship on CBC ( Canada's BBC) once a year. My older brother and I waited all year for it. The second I started watching it I fell in love with it ! What a great game!! These were the days before computers so I can only watch it when they would show it on TV. I Love the roughness of it. It reminds me of Hockey. Way to go Ireland ! We invented the greatest Winter game (Hockey) and you invented the greatest summer game (Hurling)! This Canadian will always be a fan !! Cheers !

More serfs in the mainland than Ireland. More slaves taken from the mainland by the Barbary pirates than from Ireland. Such a myopic victim hood view of history . Millions died in the Mainland industrial revolution’s impact on the nation with England having almost half the life expectancy of Ireland in that period. We all suffered for global progress, the potato famine also starved those in the mainland, true Ireland was disproportionately hit but this was a European wide tragedy by virtue of a disease that was not understood. Communication was primitive, goods, including corn from America took an age to arrange and travel the Atlantic. The whole of Europe was scrambling for food. Enough victim hood already. I am Irish on my maternal side and from a mixed Protestant and catholic marriage no less.

As an American, one thing I loved about being in Ireland and watching hurling was how when a brawl breaks out the players don't toss their sticks away like in hockey, they go straight into the row with them in-hand. I played some pick-up games with the local lads on the common after watching them for a while, and while I think they went easy on me--which I very much appreciated--I'm pleased to say I gave a decent account of myself, and went home with all my teeth. Hurling is the perfect game for a former baseball center fielder, and American football slot receiver.

Is this an American made video...? Helmets are mandatory since 2010. Croker is not the home of hurling. It's just a stadium that suffered a horrible day but critical turning point in our independence which is why it is an all Gaelic sport stadium. Making a video with bloody pictures is not a good way to value this sport. Fighting and blood happens in all sport. Hurling is a rough game but not a violent one.
@clayfada69936 жыл бұрын
Its an all gaelic stadium because it was owned by the GAA and built and designed with gaelic sport in mind.Rule 42 was actually brought in after the ban was abolished as a compromise to get supporters of the ban to vote for its abolition. Bloody sunday would have hardened attitudes towards garrison games.but on its own its not the reason that croke park was not open to garrison sports.The ban do not specifically baninng garrison sports from being played in croker it did prevent those games being played there and it came into force long before bloody sunday

Hurling is the Oldest and Fastest Field Game in the World..The game of Hurling has prehistoric origins and has been played in Ireland for at least 3,000 years in Ireland.In historical texts, the earliest reference to hurling appears to have been made about 1272 BC at the battle of Moytura, near Cong in County Mayo. The Firbolgs were rulers of Ireland and were protecting their place in a battle against the Tuatha de Danaan. While preparing for battle, the Firbolgs challenged the invaders to a hurling contest in which teams of 27-a-side took part. The Firbolgs won the contest but lost the battle. Even the legal system of the time, the Brehon Laws, took account of the existence and popularity of hurling. There are many references to the game of hurling in the centuries before the birth of Christ. There is evidence that hurling was an essential part of life for young men preparing to be warriors. This gives rise to some of the legends of early Irish history which are still being taught to schoolchildren. The most famous warrior of all was Cuchulainn who, as the boy Setanta, engaged in great deeds of hurling. The legend is based on the period of the birth of Christ and is contained in early writings, including what is known as the Book of Leinster.
@frankstein76315 жыл бұрын
aughalough1 Connor Mac Nessa,the King of Ulster and one of Setanta's foster fathers ,has been invited to a feast at the home of Cullen the smith.He stops to watch boys playing a game of hurling .He is impressed by how Setanta plays and invites him to the feast.Setanta had to finish the game but says he will be along later.Connor arrives at Cullen's house but forgets about Setanta.Cullen closes his gates having released his fierce guard dog outside. Presently Setanta arrives to see a huge slavering,glowering ,growling hound barring his way ,eyes red with anger ,spittle dripping from his fangs,ready to pounce.Setanta sees the dog's attack ,picks up his hurley and with a mighty belt drives his sliotar straight down the howling dog's throat. The mighty hound drops dead at Setanta's feet.Startled by the commotion the people inside emerge,to see the boy and the dead monstrous hound.Cullen is bereft and has lost the means to defend his family and his compound. Then the young Setanta steps forward and says ,"Cullen ,it is I that has killed your hound and left you defenceless.Until an equal guard dog is found ,and reared and trained,I shall be your hound, guarding you and yours". Thus it was that the boy Setanta became known as Cú Chulainn-the Hound of Cullen.

@@frankstein7631 Correct and right. And these Irish Hounds, especially the wolfhounds, were later sold into the Roman Empire as hunting and fighting dogs. Hurling is an extremely disciplined sport with a strict rule book and a code of honor that striking an opponent with your Hurley is cowardly . It's a though sport and injuries happen alot, from my own view I've had 10 operations due to hurling injuries. Just to note a lot of the fighting here resulted in straight red cards, even pulling off the helmet is a straight red card. Most of these clips are spread over 40 years as well..

I’ve never seen hurling before. I’m thoroughly impressed with it. I’ve played lacrosse my whole life. I’d love to give this a go. I’d prolly suck ass but why not. Some really good skill running with the ball balanced in the bat and all. I also thought I was nasty and mean as an attackman. Some of these hits make lacrosse seem soft, an all ash bat to get clubbed with? I love the Irish. Nuts.
@micmcguire6803 Жыл бұрын
Lacrosse skills transfer over to hurling pretty well. I played lacrosse in high school and then found hurling when I turned 30 (hon the Denver Gaels!). It's quickly become my new favorite sport, it's so much fun to play. It definitely feels weird at first and there's a bit of a learning curve, but after a year or so of playing you start to get the basic skills down. You can't whack players with the hurl on purpose like you can with a lacrosse stick, but incidental smacks do happen and it hurts like hell. You learn pretty quickly to protect your hand when jumping up to catch a 50-50 puck out.

Romanticizing the blood and "violence" of the sport is a great disservice. It is rough, but serious injuries are rare. It's the greatest sport yet devised by man for so many other reasons.

Years ago a busload of pub regulars on Long Island took a ride to Gaelic Park in Bronx NY. We were led by our friend the late-great Kilkenny hurler Mike O' Rourke . It was like walking in Yankee Stadium with Babe Ruth, EVERYONE knew Mike. It was only then we realized how great Mike must have been in his younger years.. Tough sport, don't know if I could handle it.

Perhaps he was a young man when it happened and the nephew is now a grown man, perhaps older now then the guy who was killed. Hurling is a young guys game. There is a trophy named after a school kid killed playing it where I went to school.

Don't think all Irish people play this, just the wild ones😉
@clayfada69936 жыл бұрын
No its not played in wild mountainy areas at all infact the characteristic hurling areas are lush farmland and some cities.Its a sport if you don't start as soon as you can walk ,forget about there have been notable exceptions,but generally if its not in the DNA of a particular area you won't survive you need to be proficient in over 100 distinct skills some guy
@clayfada69936 жыл бұрын
@@thedarquibus Not in any of the schools i went to sligo anyway.There was hurling in my town at the time,but we have no hurling at the moment infact even football is only holding on.Soccer would be stronger.Like elsewhere in rural ireland its hard to put out a team even without competition from other sports due to lack of jobs
@kingflixmovies8375 жыл бұрын
Most Irish people, despite their protestations to the contrary are actually heavily invested in britishness, and only about a 1/4 of the country plays and follows this game. Soccer and the English premier league are more popular, which is a shame as hurling is an amazing game that the Irish should be proud of.

I played hurling as a girl. It's like no feeling on earth maybe like flying /// The speed, the sound when the ball connects. But by god its's dangerous. I gave up after 4 years when I got a facial injury - Ah the days before helmets. I miss it that feeling.

remember watching this on the TV in the late 60 on wide world of sports. the game was fun but some guy broke his leg and he was laying on the ground for a long time . with the game continues all around him for many minutes. My Irish grandparents told me about the game .the only thing nice i ever heard them say about Ireland. Growing up hungry they hated Ireland. grandmother has the saddest story about having one shoe and switching feet. trying to stay warm . God bless the USA. brave people who gave me a better life .and fuck the English

I would agree it's the toughest sport, and I wear my Wexford hurling top with pride that my dear Grandma got me, but I do have to point out Pelota probably has the fastest traveling ball out of any sport, and I've been to matches in the Basque region to witness this. But it's not like hurling.... that would be like comparing squash to rugby ;)
