🛑 Note: I later learned that leniting the adjective that modifies the object of den , don , & sa/san is an grammar rule unique to Ulster and is not part of “Standard” Irish Grammar.

This is an excellent piece for those of us who never attended formal instruction and only really used Duolingo.... and remained bewildered

Your presentation is brilliant! I must confess that I almost spit my morning coffee when you mentioned lenition and "F***" words. I was taking notes and was only looking at the page not the screen when you changed visuals. :)

I am going to have to actually learn the examples you give thoroughly as a means towards remembering and assimilating the rules - that is how I was able to break through with Russian many years back. This seems really daunting otherwise... no wonder so many Irish educated people mutinied or learned very little

Thank you for your super nice comments! 😁 And I 💯 am the exact same way when I learn stuff. Some people like to jump right in and learn the minutia later, but I’m methodical and “rule” obsessed. 😂🌞 If you want, check out my Instagram (@irish.with.rosie93) where I’ve posted the study notes from the video! And thanks again for the feedback! 🌈☀️

ahh, this is complicated! But very much appreciated - I am learning in duo lingo, and frankly I have only been guessing so far when it comes to lenition. Thank you very much :)

Can someone explain the lenitions here: tá an cailín á dúiseacht ag an mbean / tá an buachaill á dhúirseacht ag an bhfear? I am german and i didn't find the answer why lenition is used by the boy... thx!

Absolutely! 👋 😃 … In both sentences, “á” is a special word which is a combination of the words “ag” (at) + “a” (his/her/their) • So let’s take the first example: “Tá an cailín á (ag a) dúiseacht ag an mbean.” This sentence conveys the message, “The girl is being woken by the woman.” But its *literal* translation is… “The girl is at her waking at the woman.” 😅 • Since the possessor “a” can mean his, hers, or their, the meaning is found out by its affect on the thing being possessed: a + lenition on the possessed thing = his (a bhó…his cow) a + no change on the possessed thing = her (a bó…her cow) a + eclipsis = their (a mbó…their cow) • So, in the sentence format of examples you gave, the ”thing” being *grammatically* possessed is the verbal noun “dúiseacht” (the act of waking. In each case, its either his or her “waking”). • Therefore… Tá an cailín á (ag a) dúiseacht (no change in the verbal noun). Tá an buachaill á (ag a) dhúiseacht (lenition) Tá na páistí á (ag a) ndúiseacht (eclipsis). • P.S. The format changes slightly for “I/You/Y’all/We are being woken, etc.” In these cases, “do” (for) is used instead of “ag” (at)… - Tá mé do mo dhúiseacht ag an mbean. (I am *for* my waking at the woman.) - Tá tú do do dhúiseacht ag an mbean. (You are *for* your waking at the woman) - Tá sibh do bhur ndúiseacht ag an mbean. (Y’all are *for* y’all’s waking at the woman.) - Tá muid dár (do + ár) ndúiseacht ag an mbean. (We are *for* our waking at the woman.) • I hope that helps! 😃 Sorry if that was a super long way to explain all that 🥴 😅…And thanks for the great question!

👍That helps a lot! I use duolingo and Rosetta Stone to learn this wonderfull language. But both ways don't give any explanations. So, go raibh maith agat, for your quick answer and greetings from lower saxony, germany😉

I’m so glad that helped! 🤗 And I know what you mean, Duo/Rosetta give literally zero explanations.😩 It may be a good investment to buy a couple of Irish books if you haven’t yet (maybe one conversational lesson book and one grammar book to start). Below is a link to a Irish book review video I did if you’re interested! 😃 You’ll find links to all the books in the video description: Irish Language-Learning Book Review!
