My grandma’s farm had six apple trees. As soon as they got big enough to pick even though they were still very green, we kids would climb up and grab a few. Then, we would take them over to the well spigot for a wash and then chow down. Mom would warn us they were too green and that we’d get sick, but we didn’t care. When they did get old enough to not make us sick, we would take some down to my great-uncle’s old horse Dolly in the stable and give them to her. She loved them!

For everyone confused on the difference between jelly and jam: jelly is made with the juice of fruit and sweetener that has been thickened (typically with pectic) and jam is made with pureed whole fruit and sweetener that has typically been thickened (again with pectin). Jelly is translucent and jam is transparent. Jelly has a texture closer to gelatin and jam is thicker and chunkier because of the pieces of fruit in it.
@IngeniousOutdoors16 күн бұрын
I think you mean jelly is translucent and jam is opaque. Not transparent. Transparent means it's basicly clear and you can see through it.

For Justine: Get yourself a food dehydrator, an apple slicer, and a Slap Chop. Cut the apples with the slicer, soak them in lemon juice for 20 minutes (keeps them from going brown and adds sourness), then dehydrate them overnight. When dry hammer them a few times with the Slap Chop, to break them into manageable pieces. Use them on your cereal in the morning, Or don't break them up and just eat the apple chips, like I do. They don't last very long in my house 😉

I'm a Cortland fan, but good ones are soooo hard to find. This local orchard near me has the most beautiful delicious Cortlands, but when I buy them in stores they're awful. Also also, no Apple Jacks I've ever had were any color other than beige. But it has been decades since I've had them. Also also also, love me some apple butter so much more than applesauce or apple jelly. I first discovered it along with almond butter in the New England region and haven't looked back since.

Where I grew up in Massachusetts, there was a restaurant (still around) called Bickfords. They have the single greatest food item on their menu. It's called "The Big Apple". If you know, you know, but you can look it up. Basically, it's like a deep dish half crepe, half pancake stuffed and tossed with slices of apple and a cinnamon/sugar mixture cooked in the oven with a cast iron pan. It's both sinful & heavenly at the same time!!! 🤤 Now I want one, but the nearest Bickfords is about 800 miles away.

Justine hit it right on the head as a condiment to pork. I have even used it to roast pork. When I process applesauce, there are 2 versions: regular applesauce, not sweetened or spiced--just essence of apple. The 2nd version is flavored with hot cinnamon.
