The original recipe for the White Lady was devised by Harry MacElhone in 1919 at Ciro's Club in London. He originally used crème de menthe, but replaced it with gin at Harry's New York Bar in Paris in 1929. According to the American Bar at the Savoy Hotel, the drink was created there by Harry Craddock. A recipe for the White Lady made with gin, Cointreau, and fresh lemon juice appears in the Savoy Cocktail Book, published in 1930. Joe Gilmore, former Head Barman at The Savoy, says this was one of Laurel and Hardy's favorite drinks. Early recipes like MacElhone's and Craddock's don't have egg white as one of the recorded ingredients. -- from Wikipedia

If you've never done the creme de menthe version, try it. It's shockingly good. I use the Tempus Fugit creme de menthe with Triplum triple sec and lime juice. I will warn it's very sweet, but it works with how tart the cocktail is.

The real secrets to these drinks is that when an interviewer asked these celebrities how they make their perfect cocktail, 3/4 of them just started naming off ingredients randomly and said "and it is called this..." It is similar to a game we use to play with our youngest brother called "Here drink this" after we took every condiment bottle in the refrigerator and jumped a little of each in a glass for him.

i read a short story about how these ppl decided to invent a dish for a newspaper's challenge, they dumped everything in their cupboard and stirred it all up, the end result was horrific, but they forgot to write down the measurements or what-all they put in it when it came time to send it in; they forgot one of the key ingredients, Tabasco sauce, and it ended up winning first place cuz everything else was good together, it was the Tabasco that made it atrocious
