Thank you for this history. I have only recently discovered that my 8X grandfather was killed at the Battle of Vinegar Hill and his name is inscribed on a monument in Wexford. His family survived and were settled on an estate in the north near Ternonfeckin on the Boyne. In 1886 another land league rebellion saw his great-grandchildren evicted and sent to road gangs and workhouses, eventually transported to Chicago to dig a canal that reversed the Chicago River and afterward to labor and die in the great Union Stockyards ...and entire generation of stateless people that lived worked and died of starvation and disease in the sums of America in the years before the 1916 Uprising back in their mother country.

Good upload. However, you failed to mention that Wolf Tone was a protestant as were many of the leaders of the United Irishmen.

Thank you for this lovely bit of education, I really enjoyed this! Okay, let me try to remember it back to entrench it... Early 1700s, penal laws established against Catholics. One of these is a change in inheritance laws, in which land is split equally between sons -unless- one of them (multiple?) turn to Protestantism. (I now get some of the vitriol between Catholics and Protestants!) United Irishmen band forces with the French in 1796 and '98 but lose that support when Napoleon comes to power One of the leaders of the UI dies, the Irish resistance intercepts British mail carriages, and the British attack in a series of battles including Vinegar Hill which shot at unarmed women and kids.

There is a lot more about it - I recommend you read more into the sources in the Description. I couldn’t capture it all for the video, but it’s fascinating at how it all went down.

Many Irish Protestants fought for Irish independence fact it's not religious sectarian war like British make it out to be.

Most of the dreaded yoemen where Irish Catholics on the payroll of the British crown. The rebellion came about because they were suffering under the penal laws which made the native Irish second class citizens the Presbyterians where treated a little better but still suffered . Their was Catholic and Protestant on both sides they rose up because of the treatment from crown forces who where running riot pitch capping and rapeing and murdering at will also the unfair laws . He is right to a degree

You’ve missed a lot in your video witch means it’s not showing a fair insight in to these times. The laws where called the Penal Laws. They where discriminatory towards anyone, not church of state for example, Church of Ireland or England ect. The founding members where Dr. William Drennan (Belfast) Henry Joy McCracken (Belfast) Thomas Russell (from cork but was a member in Belfast) James Napper Tandy (Dublin) Theobald Wolfe Tone (Dublin) Dr. William Drennan was the architect for the societ. He openly wrote how he wanted to start a brotherhood of affectionate for all men of Ireland no mater there religion. He very much done this in the light of freemasonry with he also wrote. In the 1700’s the pope banned any Catholics from becoming a member of the Masonic order. Tensions grew and the society changed from fraternal group to rebellious organisation. You left out any member born in the north of the Ireland in Belfast where the society actually started. The North of the island also had the most fighting. All men founder where protestant presbyterian. We also need to tread carefully with irish history as leaving small bits of information out can cause upset or history to be more altered than what it has already been. Best of luck with your channel. If you need any more info on this lot please let me know and I’ll pass you contact info

Where did you get this info? I'm very interested in the Rebellion and the change of Parliament. Is it true That Robert Uniacke if Cork was one of the last MPs. The name is big in Nova Scotia Canada.
