Óró, sé do bheatha 'bhaile is a traditional Irish song, that came to be known as a rebel song in the early 20th century. Óró is a cheer, while sé do bheatha 'bhaile means "welcome home", although it is better translated as "your birthright is back home".
The woman of the song returning as a liberator, Gráinne Mhaol (sometimes known as Grace O'Malley) was chieftain of the Ó Máille clan in the west of Ireland. She is a well-known historical figure in 16th-century Irish history, and is sometimes known as 'The Sea Queen of Connacht', one of the most famous female sea-raiders of all time fighting against the english occupiers.
In a nutshell, in 1578 Gráinne Mhaol (whose name was already pretty famous at the time) was thrown into the dungeons of the Dublin Castle by the local English Governor, but was later released from prison on the pretext of bringing Risdeárd an Iarainn Bourke (Richard-in-Iron, Gráinne's 2nd husband) and his fellow Irish rioters to heel. As soon as she was released, reunited with her husband, Gráinne started plundering English shipping and managed to rout an English army sent to beseige her. The following year Gráinne and Bourke went into rebellion once again to secure their rights.
This song takes place following the Flight of the Earls in 1607 wherein the Irish lords who rebelled in the Nine Years War fled the nation to seek support from the French and Spanish, however despite being already dead since 1603, the Irish people look for Gráinne Mhaol to return and expel the English once and for all. In her raiding campaign she gained legendary status among Irish rebels and is widely regarded as one of the most popular and influential revolutionary figures in Irish culture even today.
Almost 15 years later Elizabeth I imprisoned Gráinne Mhaol's sons and half-brother, forcing Gráinne to negotiate their release. Even though she refused to bow before Elizabeth (as she did not recognise her as the Queen of Ireland), the talks led to the release of her family, under the agreement that Gráinne would stop attacking English ships. Realising the meeting was useless, Gráinne went back to attacking English ships shortly after her departure.
(she was later accused to have nursed to all rebellions in that province for over forty years.)
It was also sung during the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921). In the early 20th century it received new verses by the nationalist poet Pádraig Pearse and was often sung by members of the Irish Volunteers during the Easter Rising. Because although this is an old song, a little over 100years ago Patrick Pearse re-wrote it to support the planned rising (April 1916).

It seems like rebelling is starting to come back in fashion again. All around the world, the little guys are taking on the big guys and if not winning are giving them a serious bloodied nose. As an American and soldier of the 69th Inf, there is no better rebel than an Irish rebel!

@Port Celtic Songs went to Iraq with them in '04. When we were introduced to our battalion we were attached to, we had a pipper lead us out. We were respected because we never started a fight, but we ended the ones they started. We landed in Shannon Ireland on our return from Iraq and broke out our Emerald green regimental colors. The plane had a mysterious problem that lasted 2 hours. The locals bought out all the beer In the airport bar for us and there was a definite dent in the duty free stores stock of whiskey. I'm not Irish, but was proud that I was able to bring honor to those Immigrant Irish that thought freedom was more then words put on paper and willingly took up arms to defend it. Garryowen in Glory!

It was originally about thre return of Bonnie Prince Charle but it was made more politically correct by Pádraig Pearse. Óró, sé do bheatha 'bhaile, Óró, sé do bheatha 'bhaile,[7] Óró, sé do bheatha 'bhaile Anois ar theacht an tsamhraidh. A Shéarlais Óig,[8] a mhic Rí Shéamais[9] 'Sé mo mhór-chreach do thriall as Éirinn Gan tuinnte bróig' ort, stoca nó leinidh Ach do chascairt leis na Gallaibh Chorus 'Sé mo léan géar nach bhfeicim Mur mbéinn beo 'na dhiaidh ach seachtain Séarlas Óg is míle gaiscidheach Ag fógairt fáin ar Ghallaibh Chorus Tá Séarlas Óg ag triall thar sáile Béidh siad leisean, Franncaigh is Spáinnigh Óglaigh armtha leis mar gharda 'S bainfidh siad rinnce as éiricigh! Chorus Chorus: Oh-ro, You're welcome home, Oh-ro, You're welcome home, Oh-ro, You're welcome home, Now that summer's coming! Young Charles, son of King James It's a great distress - your exile from Ireland Without thread of shoe on you, socks or shirt Overthrown by the foreigners Chorus Alas that I do not see If I were alive afterwards only for a week Young Charles and one thousand warriors Banishing all the foreigners Chorus Young Charles is coming over the sea They will be with him, French and Spanish Armed Volunteers with him as a guard And they'll make the heretics dance! Chorus

@@Bernaren60 I don't know about politically correct. I think of it as he simply perfected it. In any case, it is my observation that victory is always sweeter when you achieve it without the help of outsiders and I think that was the point of the revision.

Any time you can go and get the language of your ancestors and take it for your own, do it. There is no better way to discover how much of the culture, the deep beliefs, and ultimately the identity that's your own that an old language of the land can give you. I bet there are people around you who would send you for a summer immersion course, and if you could go like that you would come home changed, and with a gift for your own generations yet to come.

Since the channel is acting like this is their music, it's not. It's from a band called Seo Linn (who have their own youtube channel). The performance stolen for this video is one they did for Conradh na Gaeilge.

When Erin calls, we answer. Her sons and brothers died for this beautiful Isle of ours. All we ever wanted was to freely practice our religion. So many foreign sons had to die for this. Our rebel yell, the internal need to defend, all of it. GOD BLESS THE IRISH.

It’s about more than religion, the man who wrote this song wasn’t Catholic but born into a Unitarian family. He had a deep love of Irish language and culture as did many of the Republicans who came from Protestant backgrounds and fought in the Irish Uprising. More importantly it’s a song about fighting to be from oppression and tyranny, freedom of religious choice is just a part of this. Unfortunately the Republic of Ireland for many years didn’t live up to the ideals of the many heroic man who gave their lives for its recognition. The Catholic Church became the tyrannical force supported by hypocrites like deValera. The church and state functioned as one in many instances, but in recent decades, the power of the Church has waned and the people and their democratic representatives now reflect more accurately what was being fought for. Of course the North and the six counties mean the fight isn’t yet over but it’s hoped that this becomes more inevitable through political means in the years ahead. The Brits tried to label the fight as Catholic v Protestant just as Israeli’s do with their Jewish v Islam propaganda. In both cases it is more importantly a fight of the the oppressed v the oppressors. 🇮🇪🇵🇸

The lyric regarding the selling of land to the English reminds me of me Mums …. Unfavorable take on The Tinkers (as she called them) aka Travelers or Irish Gypsy. The selling of their land & birthright is what made them landless… being stolen was one thing, but selling your land to The Invaders was hard to forgive in her view of things

Theres a little miscommunication with the english translation. The line isnt meant as "youre welcome home" a more accurate translation is "youre called to come home". Which..... is exactly what this battle song was, a calling for irishmen to come home and defend their mother.

duo lingo has irish gaelic , we just call it irish, the languages come from one side of the celtic tongues and are somewhat inter understandable u like welsh which comes form the other side P-Celtic refers to the Brythonic/Brittonic languages, and Q-Celtic refers to the Goidelic/Gaelic languages. The modern Goidelic languages include Irish (Gaeilge) and Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig), the former spoken in Ireland and the latter in Scotland. Manx (Gaelg), from the Isle of Man, also belongs to this group.28 May 2013
