Oh my god! THIS is what I've wanted for so long. I've always wanted to see language lessons presented with music and history! Thank you for this! I will be looking for more! I've studied Russian, German, and French in college, but no one ever thought to incorporate music into their classes. It never made sense to me. Folk songs, especially, make a wonderful bridge between language and culture and history. Brilliant!

When I fist time came to that song, I was absolutely in love with it. Before watching your video I mastered the chorus myself. And now, thanks to you, I know 3 more lines from that masterpiece! ❤ I will not stop until I can sing the full piece in Irish. Thanks Gods I started to learn Irish, so much beautiful song there!😊

Dig deeper lads. Gráinne Mhaol (Grace O'Malley) was added later. The original version called 'Ó ro! 'sé do bheatha a bhaile" is from around the time of the Jacobite Rebellions in Scotland and it was about Bonnie Prince Charlie (Séarlas Óg "Young Charles" in the original). The song was changed shortly after the Easter Uprising of 1916 adding Grace O'Malley as a recognizable Irish figure to give the the song a rallying tone for those opposed to the English. It's basically an Irish song supporting Bonnie Charlie's claim to the throne.. Here's the original lyrics: Chorus Óró, sé do bheatha ‘bhaile, Óró, sé do bheatha ‘bhaile, Óró, sé do bheatha ‘bhaile Anois ar theacht an tsamhraidh. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A Shéarlais Óig, a mhic Rí Shéamais ‘Sé mo mhór-chreach do thriall as Éirinn Gan tuinnte bróig’ ort, stoca nó leinidh Ach do chascairt leis na Gallaibh. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Chorus ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ‘Sé mo léan géar nach bhfeicim Mur mbéinn beo ‘na dhiaidh ach seachtain Séarlas Óg is míle gaiscidheach Ag fógairt fáin ar Ghallaibh. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Chorus ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tá Séarlas Óg ag triall thar sáile Béidh siad leisean, Franncaigh is Spáinnigh Óglaigh armtha leis mar gharda ‘S bainfidh siad rinnce as éiricigh!

Didn’t Padraig Pearse change lyrics before the rebellion as it was sung during it and he was murdered right away after?

There are dozens of examples of traditional or older folksongs being conscripted for other purposes and having their lyrics changed. That's the beauty of folk music. It's for the people and it can evolve to send a new message as the times change, no copyright or royalties required.

by the way your translation of the chorus is sadly incorrect. ORO mean "hey wake up;" It is an alarm. The other chorus lines are a call to return home to defend the homeland. The "welcome" crap is a pop version nicety. This song is a call to war and invokes Grace OMalle, the pirate heroine of Irish might. By the Grace lived during Quean Elizabeth's time, went to London and would not bow to HRH. This song is like Paul Revere sounding the alarm, "The British are coming." Oh Gosh Please do an all Gaelic version and don't mock our history.
2 жыл бұрын
Ní fíor sin ar chor ar bith! Is dócha gur fáilte abhaile do bhrídeach nua-phósta a bhí san amhrán i dtosach agus amhrán Seacaibíteach ina dhiaidh sin. B’é Pádraig Pearse a chuir Gráinne isteach ag tús an fichiú céad. That’s completely untrue. The song likely started out as a welcome home to a new bride and it was a Jacobite song after that. It was Pádraig Pearse who stuck Gráinne in at the beginning of the twentieth century.
