I saw a full-grown one yesterday, and it was GINORMOUS! It looked like a cross between a schnauzer and a Great Dane. Appropriately, his owner named him Samson.

they say they don't live long but every moment with one is a gift, always to be treasured. all our lives are to short but we don't give it up, we enjoy what we have. accept the gift of life and accept the gift of the irish wolfhound.

I'd love an Irish wolfhound. Because I have a fused spine but I'd never have to bend down to give them a pat 😍

Makes me so sad, we had a wolfhound who was around 5 and we got him a girl puppy to keep him company, he loved her but 7-8 months later he got cancer in his ankle and we had to put him down. The poor puppy got so upset we thought the best thing would be to give her to another person who had a wolfhound as well.

Haha, I totally agree. They are quite intelligent in their own way, they just don't listen very well. They are experts at getting food though, especially that which they are not supposed to get.

Anyone figure out a way to make these guys live a long healthy life yet? Like at least 14 years. There has to be a way, I imagine someone on this planet has to be working on this.

irish wolfhound is an ancient breed. all ancient breeds are independent thinkers,not that their stupid,their just independent and often do what pleases them. and trust me they are very very smart,its just that they dont show their intellect in simple commands

It is funny when people can't believe me when I tell them my last Irish Wolfhound was 28 pounds at 8 weeks. They don't know the breed.

Do they tend to lighten up in colour as they get older? I just put a deposit on a little baby who's a dark black brindle...just curious what he might grow up to be
@MichaelJepson803 жыл бұрын
The black ones tend to get more and more grey hairs as they get older. But some remain very dark.

@@MichaelJepson80 thanks so much for the response! I have a question about feeding. I feed my current dogs ( not wolfhounds...collie mutts) raw in the morning and a good quality kibble in the evening. The breeder told me wolfhound puppies shouldn't be on puppy food. Is that true?
@MichaelJepson803 жыл бұрын
@@cougarelli We do give them puppy food, but only a bag or 2. Be wary of calcium rich foods, these can cause growing pains. Try to get a quality food with large briskets, as they tend to swallow them whole if small enough.

I agree on the loveable part, but I haven't spotted any trace of any intellect whatsoever in either of our Wolfhounds. Not that they are stupid, just not smart. Or they just act like it so the don't have to listen very well, I've been thinking that might be it.

Are they a single litter? We had an Irish Wolfhound for many years. She lost feeling in her rear legs when she was 12 yrs 6 months but could still run full tilt if she was helped up.
@MichaelJepson8010 жыл бұрын
They are indeed. Wow, 12 1/2 years! That's very old for Irish Wolfhounds, most that I know of have lived about 8 years max, with some exceptions at 10 yrs old.
@rpullman10 жыл бұрын
Michael Jepson Alex Comfort ("The Joy Of Sex") researched the lifespan of the breed. He found that if an IW made it to its 7th birthday it would make it to its 10th birthday, and a small percentage would live to 11 but none of those in his study reached 12. We put ours down a couple of months short of her 13th birthday.

ive been wanting an irish wolfhound for years! they are my favourite dogs in the world! the only reason i dont have one is because my mom wont get one because they are too expensive. ive have one one day though!!! they are such beautiful dogs, but hideous puppies!!:D
@ellapeterson14848 жыл бұрын
how much do they shed?
@MichaelJepson808 жыл бұрын
+Ella Peterson Not much, it depends on how well you maintain their coat, really. They need to be stripped every once in a while (once or twice a year) to remove dead hair. If you don't do that, they will start to shed that dead hair.
@ellapeterson14848 жыл бұрын
+Michael Jepson is it difficult to strip them? my dad wants a dog that sheds very very little
@MichaelJepson808 жыл бұрын
Ella Peterson It's not difficult, but it is a lot of work because of their size. I recommend using rubber gloves to have better grip on the hairs, but expect to spend up to 8 hours to fully strip a Wolfhound, but you'll be able to do it quicker after a couple of times. They do shed by the way, I mean, I find hairs behind doors and such and I do get hair on my suit when Murphy cuddles me, so they are certainly not the best breed if you want little to no shedding. I'd always recommend to go see a breeder or just a Wolfhound owner and ask them if you can come and see the dog, most will gladly do so. It's always in the best interest of the dog to make sure you a re well prepared before you get one. They can also show you how to strip them, so you can get a better idea of the amount of work it is.
@ellapeterson14848 жыл бұрын
+Michael Jepson Can you hire a groomer to strip them? if so do you know how much it is?
@MichaelJepson808 жыл бұрын
Ella Peterson Sure you can, but I don't really know how much that would be. And I guess you wouldn't really be interested in how much it would cost over here in the Netherlands :)

Im about to adopt an irish wolfhound x borzoy puppy, can anybody tell me how tall the wolfhound pups should be at 4 months old? Thanks
@MichaelJepson809 жыл бұрын
I have the growth curves of both of mine and they were around 60-65 cm tall and 30-34 kg. Not sure if that is what they "should" be, but it gives a general idea.
@MadeInIndigo9 жыл бұрын
Michael Jepson thank you :)

Michael Jepson Absolute garbage talk man - Male Irish Wolfhounds can reach 180 Pounds which is 81 Kilograms. (Labs will reach 34 Kilograms easily, know the facts before you try to educate others).
@MichaelJepson809 жыл бұрын
Tony Stark Read the question before accusing people of supplying erroneous information. The question was: "How tall should the pups be AT 4 MONTHS OLD". And according to the growth curves I have of my two Wolfhounds, they were 60 and 65 cm tall and 30 and 34 kg AT 4 MONTHS OLD. The male is 82kg and 93 cm tall now, as an adult.
@workinalday43518 жыл бұрын
+MadeInIndigo wolfhound x borzoy As far as I know are not Irish Wolf Hounds! They are a Russian Hound, much thinner and do not grow as tall, they look more like a tall skinny, shaggy, grey hound. If you really want an Irish Wolf Hound then you should shop around a bit. They are expensive though, also much thicker than a borzoy. But as you can see in this video, very very cute, as puppies and really cool looking once full grown, also very protective of family!

I think it's safe to say, Irish wolfhounds seem to get cuter as they grow, the puppies after rolling in mud, look almost as if they are benji's radioactive post nuclear war pups. but they are cuter up close.
