you know, when an immigrant to a country goes "this place has a lot of potential for business, but..." it's a bit like Jack Carter, or Christopher Columbus, or Cook, or Cortez, standing on a beach, saying "this place has a lot of potential, but the Amerindians aren't very open to being exploited by us"...

Belarus central bank doesn't comply with Euro rules, they are independent so if they would join the global money system they couldn't print money from their own bank. So it's a choise between monetary independence and free trade, they made the independence choise.

Why would they use the Euro if they are not even part of the European Union? That is ridiculous.... They countries that use the Euro are the ones who are part or want to be part of the EU. Only when Belarus stops being a dictatorship they can dream of becoming part of the European Union.

The things you complain about, are some of the things that make Belarus, Belarus. You say in another video that you like how Belarus still has its culture instead of being a commercialized culture-less mishmosh like Europe is becoming, and the way to keep a culture intact is to make living within it difficult so you don't have tons of outsiders coming in and saying "Wow it's easy to live here, now let's work on making it like where I came from!".

You get a better rate in the local currency with credit cards. The same applies across Europe when you're using sterling credit cards , always pay in local currency. The social system isn't geared towards business due to its Soviet legacy and current leadership. The weather is continental . We're lucky in Ireland and Britain to have the North Atlantic drift , milder winters and cooler summers.

Thanks for the great and interesting video as well as the whole channel. I'm belorussian and I live in Minsk, and I completely understand all your points however personally I just love cheese)) but the card in Euro thing. If you just try to pay by card in a store, it doesn't matter what the currency is there, the bank applies exchange rates automatically. Maybe that place was kinda specific? Outdated software/hardware? Or the locals just didn't know that? Anyway, you definitely can use your cards in euros (as well as US dollars, Russian rubles, etc.) everywhere in Belarus without any restrictions.

Just found the channel and have been binge watching for hours. A likely answer to the currency and bureaucracy issues is simply: national sovereignty. To this I'd add what you pointed out in another video about visas: one has to enter and depart via Minsk airport to travel there visa-free. Leaving overland to Russia or Latvia after having entered the country visa-free via air will get one into big trouble. From the standpoint of a tourist, that's certainly maddening. It makes no sense. But try looking at it in a way that does make sense. Viewed from a sovereign Belarus perspective, it may make perfect sense that Belarus would not allow people who enter the country visa-free by air to do things (such as enter and exit the country via 3rd countries) which ordinarily require a visa. From that perspective, Belarus isn't inconveniencing anyone. On the contrary, they're giving the legitimate visitor to the country a break, while punishing those who would take advantage of visa-free airport entry to get up to God knows what in and out of Russia, Latvia, and Ukraine. One isn't allowed to use Euros in Belarus because it's a foreign currency. Love the channel!

About number three. It's better to have worker owned cooperatives than to sell your country and your people to foreigners. Also in worked owned cooperatives and state owned enterprises workers have a right to form a syndicate. I am from Serbia and here if you try to form a syndicate in a private or especially foreign private enterprise, you get fired, that's why syndicates are non-existent here, they do exist in some enterprises but only formally. And we are a former socialist country too, we were once part of Yugoslavia.

Great VIdeo my Irish friend, way to go! I first went to Bulgaria, the former Yugoslavia and Romania in 1973, and on three tries to obtain a Visa, could not get into the Former Soviet Russia! I guess they did not want a long haired Hippy from Cali with a beat up Volkswagen bus bought in Amsterdam peddling 8 tracks tapes of Rock n Roll music and Levi Jeans!!! Then surprised everyone in my family after doing intensive study of Soviet politics and totalitarian rule for all most 70 year, I was posted to Moscow as a Commercial Attache in 1996! So while I have yet to arrive in Minsk, plan Spring 2020, many of your comments are apropos from my experience in Moscow! So let begin with some of your points! Vodka, much of it as worse than Wood Alcohol, at least that is what we call it in the States! Dangerous by the way! Darkness truly affected all of people I know in Moscow, at least expats and Gringos, but not I! However the cold cold rain sometimes in September/October was the death knell! I was working 10 to 14 hours a day carrying President Clinton's baggage and taking him and his buddies to meet Russian women? hahaha! The serious/glumness of the people as a student of Russian Literature, I would sum up in the Russian soul/works of art, being ruled by Tyrannical Leadership, either the Tzars or Lenin/Stalin vicious regime and the absolute complete domination of all feelings, art, politics, and freedom! The weather may also contribute to the apparent sadness, but it is a combination of different factors in my humble opinion! Like most people say even in Western Europe, apart from the Italians and Greeks, you are Americans always seem so happy, always smiling, what is your problem? Our problem is are ancestors are IRISH! hahaha! Belarus is a puppet of Putin and on the one hand has a BIG FOOT still in the former Soviet Communist Dictatorial Rule which keeps crime down and young people and others without the ability to move forward, although the VISA process has loosened for us Yanks! Also this contributes to the ancient bureaucracy of Russia and all of those countries under it s rule! Putin and his buddy puppet Lukashenko are tough customers, do not under estimate the ability to put you down and shut you up! I am not a big fan of the food from that general region, I am more of a Mediterranean Dude, but I do like a good Borsht! I was brought on boiled cabbage, potatoes, and Cole Slaw/Red beets, and Sunday dinner of Rib Roast! Anyway, great video, sorry for the long diatribe, cheers and blessings from Honduras, enroute to Minsk, once I get the Visa and the Work Visa! By the way, Irish, can you divulge somewhat the kind of work you are doing without giving away the store? CIao

Complaints about your complaints: Bureaucracy is a necessity for good government. True, it can be overdone, existing only to serve itself. In order to fault it, one must be specific. To plead to make it more business friendly. If it did not protect the public from pollution, hazardous materials, unhealthful products, unsafe practices, unwise zoning, and many other practices unfriendly to people, it would be very friendly to unscrupulous businesses. Belarus may have good reason for not allowing purchases in euros, which is what a euro credit card would do. The euro is a currency with many problems. Ask an Italian or a Greek. Go to a bank and exchange your euros for the Belarus currency. The Belarus government is right to protect the integrity of its own currency. Scrape the cheese away with your knife, if possible, or ask the waiter to tell the chef not to use cheese. These are difficult times and getting worse. It is hard for anyone who keeps up with the news to been optimistic. The weather in northern Europe, especially in a region whose climate is not mitigated by a warm body of water, is "continental": cold winters and hot summers. Love it, or leave it. Hawaii is nice. Can you afford to live there?

Not to mention the need for each one to be translated and verified by the Irish Government..... it was such a costly procedure!!

Ok where are all the people. The parks are empty and even the subway in rush hour seems like there arent that many people. Do most people not work? What is unemployment rate in Belarus. You seem like the happiest guy there. Everyone is so downtrodden.

red tape, bureaucracy, inefficiency... all of these are the legacy of Soviet Union. I think Belarus is still better than other republics, less corruption at least. But disagree with the euro thing, in most countries outside the euro zone, you have to pay your bills with local currency. like your video, please keep it up.

@@IrishPartizan I'm not an expert, in my personal understanding: first, this is about sovereignty; second, to avoid chaos, if they allowed using euros, why not us dollars, russian rubles and many other powerful foreign currencies.third, the central bank of Belarus definitely does not want its currency being marginalized.

In the order you present things: 1. Yeah, international anty money laundering laws. Why are you surprised? It is NORMAL you can't do that, you have to have extraordinary agreements between countries for such transactions. Like common market in EU... 2. We're Slavs. We don't "smile like stupid to cheese":) 3. Sounds like you advocate for political revolution!!! 4. Cheese is good, c'mon dude! For sure it's not as bad as f**king parsley in Ukraine! 5. Can you help me find a citizen? I hired a Soviet citizen in 1991 to work at the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati. She was terrific! We all loved her and wanted to help her in any way possible. I’ve tried to find her on social media. I have an old address but it’s been 29 years. I would love to find her. She was married with two small boys. I want to find her. If you could help I would be so great full!!

Interesting list of what you hate. Many of these are rather subjective, but at least it gives viewers some ideas. Number 4 is very east European. Most of the east Europeans are complaining a lot and they do it without sugarcoating. 🙂 I'm one of them. Number 3, as for the cheese, please don't believe that cheese - cholesterol connection 🙂 Cheese is full of good bacteria, vitamins and minerals. I'd rather blame bread, potatoes and sugar for your cholesterol 🙂 Look at the French how much cheese they eat and how long they live 🙂 Number 1 is rather subjective. I personally hate Guinness beer that you would probably admire. I drank cr.p booze all over the world but our taste buds are different, so what I like you may not and vice versa 🙂 But regardless, thanks for the insight.

The red tape argument might actually be a benefit in some cases? There may be a fear of ending up looking something like Moldova for example(saw videos by Mr Bald and Bankrupt) or other horribly poor and decrepit areas of Russia and the former Soviet Union since the fall of the USSR. When money floods in from outsiders it doesn't often benefit the people of the country where it is pumped into. If Belarus is quite stable then there could be a fear of the grass not always being greener.
