I think this is enough to be shown about their past. Irisu was the girl that wasn't fond of the cat (or maybe she just reminds uuji of her). She seems quiet due to problems with her health, either that or she takes medicine to "relax" (trying no to be censored by youtube). Uugi was a kid with some interesting ideas, that didn't mind the cat but didn't prioritized it over the rabbit either, and played with both and watched both playing too. He saw a girl playing with the rabbit and became fond of her, but the rabbit died naturally and the boy wanted to make it memorable, so he cut the rabbit to make it the center of attention, but it didn't happen. This we can see his mental state. When he grows up, he became appealed to dying and tried to do it to himself, and during his uni years he stared drawing cats dying on purpose. He enticed Irisu and then she became enamoured by also seeing his drawings, and both started to long for each other. The other two didn't got along with Uugi at first, but tried harder and Uugi (begrudgingly) let them stay near him and include him. He was always alone, so having them around was nice for him and he became used and comfortable with them. But still wanted to die and still wanted to be with Irisu. Then she started to approach them, she began time before to make a plan to kill Uugi's "friends" and stay with him. Uugi wanted to... understand her? Get closer to her? Anyway, Uugi discovers her plan by reading her writings, but doesn't care about it. Uugi wanted to stay with her, but the idea of being killed by her was better for him, so he decides to not do anything and to draw rabbits instead of cats, also dying on purpose, to make Irisu kill him too. Until this point, this is canon, I think. My theory is that the game depicts Uugi's interactions with Irisu, the more points we get in the game, the more comfortable Irisu feels around Uugi (or maybe even all three of them, since we have to manipulate all sorts of colors and figures). This is why getting a bad score so often at first gets us a bad ending, we didn't socialized much with Irisu and she didn't second-thought her plan, thus she killed us all. If we get many points, we make her more and more comfortable, so she thinks twice before executing them all and stops it all, allowing the "birthday's surprise" to continue. The base game is that, the hard mode I think is about the past, which is harder to overcome. Uugi's note said it, "to erase my past", someone mentioned the name for the hard mode means "extermination", and I think it means Uugi's efforts to "exterminate" his past, to change the future and fix his mistakes. And after Many interactions with Irisu, we as Uugi manage to make her feel so happy that she forgets her past objective and feel content with the present she has. He himself says "well, whatever, that's too much of a hassle", but my guess is that thos thoughts were already in his mind rooting a plan to stop Irisu. Or at least to pass a lot of time with her in our last moments. We as the player don't have any guarantee to have a "good" or "bad" ending by some random number, so neither does Uugi. And maybe the extermination mode was both of them talking about that trauma of the past, which could boost their mental health a lot, to face it and come to terms with it. That's what I got from the story. Edit: forgot to mention, I do wish to read Uugi's reaction to Irisu not killed them in the trip. I think he would write interesting things. Also, just thought that this is why she cries in the bad ending. Because she will or has already killed Uugi, since he failed to make Irisu happy and she has followed her plan.

the only thing you got wrong is that Irisu didn't know about the rabbit drawings until the trip, it's the reason why Uugi brought his notebook with him, to show it to her and make her kill him, and she also doesn't mention these drawings in her notes, which means he didn't show it to her in the good ending. Also, in good ending he seems to sketch a drawing of the rabbit in his dreams above the dead rabbit with severed head, which means he probably got rid of most of it because of his conscience and intention to "exterminate the past"

Wow, I’m glad I’m not the only one going back to this game. After playing it once after a while, I began playing through it again and came here to see if there was anything I missed. Thanks for uploading this; I didn’t know about the Level 100 text. I wish there was more to this story; I want to know what happens with Irisu and Uuji. Still a very touching story years after.

the presentation of this game was so well done and the outside-the-game-window scare is so memorable. I'm surprised I never saw more like it, as far as I know, Doki Doki Literature Club is the only game that has come close to Irisu Syndrome in terms of metahorror and quality.

eric, did you know Salvato said that DDLC was actually inspired by Irisu? Along with Eversion and Yume Nikki. (Try Eversion, if you didn't yet.)

OneShot also involves some cool poking around in the game's files, although it's not horror by any means.

@@tehValorin Really? Damn, I wish that was more known, so less people would sleep on Irisu. Imo it is more immersive than DDLC, since it basically puts you quite literally in the place of the characters, making us find Irisu's notes and the picture she stole from Uuji, like Ageha found in the end of act 1's good ending, and making us influence the outcome of the story by scoring enough points in the "game" Irisu admits playing in her head to clear her mind. Also, yeah, Eversion kicks ass. My favorite lovecraftian game.

Irisu getting a chance for happiness in the last Metsu ending makes me really happy, her genuine smile once you reach level 100 just confirms it to be that after everything Irisu can be truly happy. Not usually how these stories go

I have a question for you. How do you get the "suicidal rabbit.txt" file? I'm currently trying to figure that out. Edit: Nevermind. ./////////.

I cant fully understand the plot, but I love this game. It creeps you out without cheap jumpscares or putting blood everywhere. And the plot is very interesting, even though, as I said, I can't understand it fully. Overall, a very good game! Wish I could play it but I don't think I can.

The ending with all 4 of them in the same picture is the real ending. All the other endings were fantasies by Irisu that she calmed herself down with. Metsu mode reveals the backstory. A boy and a girl both yearn for the other silently. The girl was lonely and her only friend, the rabbit, died and she blamed the cat. The rabbit actually died a natural death and the boy mutilated it to make its death more memorable so people would talk to the girl. It didn't work. The two other friends are just normal extroverts that the boy, and eventually the girl, warm up to.

@@weirdghost No problem! There's also some motifs regarding cats and rabbit, with Irisu strongly connected with the lonely rabbit and the extrovert girl connected with the popular cat. Maybe there's some meaning behind the car being innocent the whole time or some other connections, but im just a comment on KZbin so I'm not gonna even try.
