I was so lucky to grow up in New Orleans with a steady diet of Miss Irma Thomas all through those years. The New Orleans Queen of Soal and many others. The great news is she is still rocking. (JAZZ FEST NEW ORLEANS)

Mike Gruhn that would be wonderful- make it happen Charlie! Mind you considering how every character who sings it has an unhappy fate would want to spare Irma that!

Considering the newest promo for Black Mirror & Netflix uploaded on Netflix's channel 3 days ago as of writing this comment also featured her beautiful song, sung by Jessica Brown-Findlay, I would be quite surprised if the creators of the show aren't itching to get Irma to appear on a future episode at this point.

My mamma was an alcoholic. She grew up in foster care and drank her sorrows away everynight and played the blues. I grew up on Irma. I now have lived in New Orleans for 30 years. I come home from working in the French quarter late at night and listen to Irma, like tonight. She lives 5 miles away from me and often im tempted to go leave a letter on her door telling her what her music means to me. She is legendary to me. I often wonder how man 50 yr old white men or 50 yr Olds period know every word to her songs. Who is home in bed at 3 a.m. jamming to Irma??? I am.. trust. Shout out to Irma Thomas for a lifetime of good and timeless music.

It's a trip to see so many on here because of black mirror and the light it shed on this classic. I got lucky years ago when an ex girlfriends mother was playing this song. The chorus and xylophone caught my attention right off the bat. Had it on my music lists for awhile now. Played it at my house party I was hosting for my parents and my mother remembered the song and had forgotten it over the years. Now it's requested a lot by her. Awesome song

I saw it on AB when I was 13. Loved Irma. This was in the same R&B sound in the genre of the he girl singers on 1962-65. Timi Yuro, Sandi Shaw, Cilla Black, Dusty Springfield doing blue-eyed soul. Irma was the real deal. New Orleans girl. Motown signed Brenda Holloway and I thought for sure they would get Irma. It was a glorious time to be a teen.

wish modern music was more this style...timeless
@MactanDotCom8 жыл бұрын
+FloridaRaider Today's music is not music. It's made by synthesizers, drum machines, and people with no talent. Consumed by tattooed, brainless drug addicts. Pushed on the population by a failing entertainment industry due to slim profits caused by pirates. Real talent got greedy and overpriced their products and caused the demise leading us back to the days of traveling minstrels.
@TheDeblulu8 жыл бұрын
+FloridaRaider You need to be listening to the Blues! Irma's still doing it. So are many others!
@VicSC3008 жыл бұрын
+MactanDotCom that is such a closed minded view of music and you should be ashamed if you truly feel that way. There are still plenty of very talents musicians today - even those that work on "synthesizers and drum machines" as you say. Irma Thomas' era of music was absolutely gorgeous, but so was the 40s, 50s, 70s, 80s, and heck, all music. I suppose not everyone is blessed with the ability to truly love music and appreciate it in all forms.

A quick trivia note about Johnny Burnette, whose song was featured on Rate A Record. I'm guessing this show was taped potentially days before Johnny Burnette died in a boating accident on 8/1/1964. At first I thought they were featuring his song because he had just passed, but you wouldn't think so by the way Dick was reacting at the end of the song. I wish we could see where Dick introduces the song just to confirm he had no idea of Johnny's passing. And I really like Johnny's song too.

I long for the time when music was good, and race wasn't really an issue at all for the kids. At the beginning of this video you saw the white and black couples sharing the dance floor and really digging watch each other dancing. I think with a little time animosity and segregation and disparity would have just evaporated if politics had not gotten in the way. Notice all the kids dressed well and were all well behaved and spoke in a normal way and the black artists in particular were incredible talents and artists and I think the white kids really recognized, appreciated and respected that and gave them their due. And the message in the music always seemed to be a good and positive one regardless of who it came from. It's a bloody shame how things went south from those days and where we are now as a society and the music today for the most part is terrible and many so called artists have little talent if any, just heavily promoted and have the studios fix their voice. The best Guage for any band or artists is to listen to them live with no electronic voice correction being used and Irma has only gotten better over the years.
