Which couple did you like best?
Here is your first (and unfortunately last) look at all of the 1970 Dance Contest finalists from across the country. In July, couple #1, Steven Rice and Linda Gibson, will win the trip to Hawaii. Last year, Steven’s twin brother Sterling came in 2nd place in the 1969 Dance Contest, winning a trip to Finland. Steven’s daughter (@Cheenjoo Pearl) commented here a few months ago and said that, sadly, both Steven and Sterling had passed away. (Steven 1952-2015, Sterling 1952-2003, RIP)
The young lady in couple #4 from Oklahoma City, Beth Freeland, commented here a few months ago as well. I hope you finally see this Beth!
Steven and Sterling went on to form a singing group in the late 70’s called the “Triple S Connection”. The trio is best known for performing the original theme for the TV show “Dance Fever”, which ran in syndication from 1979-1987 and featured a weekly dance contest.
“Up Around The Bend” is at #5 today on the Billboard Hot 100 and will peak at #4 next week.

I was also 15 years old, good memories of that time. The music, the atmosphere, camaraderie. Quiet and relatively safe time. Sure, the necessary problems with growing up. Attended an internal school to learn seamanship. 3 years after that I chose to become a marine (Dutch Marine Corps) and stayed this for 8 years. Of course also good times in the early 70s up to and including 1980. My children were raised with the music from the mid-60s to the 80s. And do have some idea of how their father feels about the good old days. I am now a born again Christian, I cherish my youth, but look ahead and look for things from above. Most music nowadays is vulgar or ambiguous, a pity because it affects our youth so badly. God Is Good All The Times.

Aww! I remember 1970 well. Exactly 50 years ago, for me. That year was special in so many ways! Had my first kiss from a guy I secretly adored - well, a little peck but it still sent me into orbit! I remember the dances and what now seems such an innocent time. Thanks for posting!

Same here in Canada....I was going to school dances then...we also called them record hops in 1970.. at least in the small town where I was. I remember the song "Up and around the Bend" playing when I arrived at one of these events....it was so exciting and electric...we danced on our own, wild and free with some rock n' roll duets and the waltzes were to die for. "Going steady" still happened, believe it or not...as for me, I was popular enough but didn't have a boyfriend yet...a lot of us junior girls didn't. One of my favourites was the CCR tune, "Long as I Can See the Light....All of the CCR songs were played..."Susie Q" was popular...I preferred "Little Travellin' Band", "Lookin' Out My Back Door" and "Who'll Stop the Rain". We were more innocent and a lot more sure of words like "Love" and "Cherish" in those days tho' the times had been a changin' since the 60's...soon it would all be gone with the wind. So many fond memories of family and friends...seems almost like another world now.

I have to give them credit dancing on national TV. I danced locally for Disco dance contest and although fun and one time, it was nerve wracking for me 😰. They all did a great job. I liked #1 the best and the young man from Memphis danced pretty good too. In one year, those turning 18 would be given a voice by allowing them to vote. The 26th amendment was passed in March 1971. The power they held to change the landscape of our nation then and now, wow! Amazing!

Historical note: There weren't any Latinos or Hispanics around in 1970. The category "Hispanic" or concept of it had yet to be invented. The term "Latino" was created even later. Of course there were people of Columbian, Puerto Rican, or Mexican descent, but they would not have considered themselves to be a particular group anymore than those of Irish, Italian, or Russian descent would have considered themselves to be particular group.
