Great review LGR! Brings back a ton of nostalgia. The first (and only) commercial game I wrote soundtracks for. All I had at the time was an Amiga and when Graffiti shipped me an Adlib Gold with 18 independent audio channels, I felt I had a music studio at my fingertips. I was asked to only use 9 channels, for compatibility with the earlier OPL2-based cards, and that was still plenty. The dynamic soundtrack idea came from one of the developers (Ivan) and was a great addition. Too bad I didn't get to write more tunes, or make them a bit longer. I was given no indication as to how many different missions, locations and environments would be present in the game. Many of the original Graffiti developers moved to the UK to work for videogames or big banks. Thanks again for stirring up some good memories!

I disagree. MW2 FMV was already mentioned, but that took DD 3 months and around $100k from what I heard. It's all about time/money and getting the right people on the job. Throwing something together in the last two weeks of production in Lightwave or 3D Studio simply wasn't cutting it...even in 1995. Most CG you saw in games of the time wasn't "cutting edge" at all unless it was from some larger, well-funded studio. Most of it was rather mediocre, often rushed. Simply due to the fact that most studios had no dedicated teams or artists for cut scenes or FMV, so regular artists often did double duty. I didn't work on game-related stuff that often (VFX guy at hearth) and I cranked out my fair share of mediocre/ugly shit but it was either full-time on ingame assets or full-time on prerendered/FMV stuff.

I love the "Damn I'm Good" callout, because my friends and I used that phrase ironically all the time during the 90s.

I miss this mech era of games. MW5 scratched the itch quite well, Titanfall 2 too, but there can be so much more. In the mean time, it's good to dig up another one of these, retro goodness made just because mechs are badass.

Typical example of a Mehwarrior game (the omission of that c was intentional).

I'd love to see your video on Mech Warrior games, I remember seeing it as a kid and being blown away.

Really reminds me of the ROTT engine - different levels seemed to have their own building heights, which were fixed across the whole level just like ROTT. No GADs or altered player heights by the look of it though. The framerate didn't seem too good though. Similar like ROTT they seemed to try to overcome the limitations of the engine through sheer charm and a silly amount of features.

I'd say it looks more creative than ROTT

Maybe, the sheer amount of cutscenes is a little crazy. I wish more effort went into the actual presentation and gameplay though, ROTT has it beat there imo.

@@DaedalusRaistlin Well, IMO ROTT gameplay sucks. It has lots of cool features, it has great humor, but as a game it sucks, if compared with, say, Doom/Heretic. Music is awesome too.

I haven’t played it in a while, but I remember liking ROTT quite a bit. Also you could walk around at different heights, jump on a trampoline thing, ascend stairs, end up on the top of a wall...

Oh man. You have become like a saturday morning cartoon for a 40 year old man. Make some breakfast, good coffee and just enjoy a calm morning. Thank you for these videos.

If you are at an age where you can appreciate a game this old, then all of your BMs have high Explosive Potential.

Always makes me happy when Clint remembers the "G" in LGR stands for games. More game reviews man, miss them!

This game totally reminds me of a lot of the low budget "Eurogames" I played on my Amiga 500 back in the day. Charming, flawed...Yet compelling. And they were the only things I had at the time.

Finally. A game review. I love your hardware stuff, but i love your old dos game reviews!
@Mike_1293 жыл бұрын
I never understand the down-votes, I base my vote on the creator and the presentation of the video. If I don't like the game that is not the creators fault, it is the developers. I think LGR delivers top notch content and without him we would never see some of these retro awesome things. I have been a follower for many years, and have never had to down-vote. Why are there down-votes? What am I missing?
@starwarsunfiltered78483 жыл бұрын
Good question. Of my fifteen years of using KZbin, I have probably down-voted maybe ten videos, all of which were egregiously horrible, and wasted my time.
@rubz13903 жыл бұрын
Some peopme are really hateful of everything and everyone for no reason, don't try to find a illogical answer. Alternatively, write it off as KZbin being buggy

Thanks! I've been looking for the title of this game for 24 years now.

Well, if you want a 90s mech game with FMVs, Heavy Gear fills that spot nicely. I know it's not really considered an all-time classic (people seem to prefer the 2nd one) but I really liked it and back then having an FMV game that wasn't an adventure game was still impressive for me.
@GugsGunny3 жыл бұрын
Is there a name for the game fonts? They seem pretty widespread on 90's games.
