I do Hung Gar. While it is used for resistance training, the other main purpose is to simulate getting pulled after striking. When you throw a strike, the rings keep moving and you have to adapt to the momentum changes. It isn't really used to build forearm toughness, we have exercises (e.g. three star sparring) which you do with a partner, much more efficient. And they are loud, I can't use them unless I have earplugs in. They are fun to use but you don't really load up on the weight unless you are strong or doing tension exercises.

When training tan tui we would use ankle/wrist weights for endurance training. We trained tan tui by holding various postures throughout the form for a 5 count. To go all 12 roads, with 3 reps per road as we were taught, and with holding postures, the form took 20 minutes! My teacher said he used to have a group that would use the iron rings for this. They’d slowly add more over time. I never did this myself. I think wrist weights are more efficient personally!

I came here to say almost the same thing. I’ve studied Hung Gar and Southern Praying Mantis. I’ve used iron rings and leg weights for most of my life when I used to train every day. They are used more like Goku uses weighted clothes during his martial training and not as a weapon or conditioning of the forearms. 3 Stars and 7 Stars is done for conditioning the forearms and legs.

if i can speculate one thing, the reason why he would be using rings would be his age and after a break from actively fighting. To control his balance and force within each strike according to his age, he would wear the ring in order to adjust his strength. But i still am pondering on the point you make if the rings woul be useful in blocking attacka. XD

@@Manakyn maybe the weight helps his balance like he is used to specific weight to strike. like he would not able to control said strike and would likely topple off his body if he strike without the extra weight. In the Sancai Tuhui (Chinese: 三才圖會) compiled in 1609, is shown and described a weapon called Niu Zi (扭子, button): A pair of metal rings. They may be related to Gelang Lanun (Malay: Pirate ring), a silat weapon that is said to be introduced to the Malay world by Chinese pirates. They probably were portable brass knukles like weapons.
@egglyph

Those were larger diameter. There’s a couple of movies where they were shown. They could be used for striking kinda like knuckles, but also allowed to catch an opponent by a neck or a limb, used as a lever could strangle or break a bone. I think Samo Hung demoed a formal practice in one of Jackie’s movies.

Kung fu got very creative in a time before exposure to western weight lifting. Other tools include the stone lock, and unrealistically heavy weaponry. Several forms employ a Guan Dao which is intentionally way heavier than one you could practically use for combat! The bagua style has their own giant sword, often called the bagua dao, or dadao, which is similarly heavy. At least, traditionally it is. Modern bagua dao are made lighter for performance purposes.

I don't know why, but I've always kind of had a soft spot for the use of metal rings as a form of combat. Then again, that might be because the first time I saw it, a kangaroo did it, and kangaroos make everything cooler. :p (I know Warriors of Virtue isn't good, but the idea of five kangaroo warriors who are masters of the chinese elements, while a bit on the random side, is still a cool idea in my opinion.) So when I saw it done in Kung Fu Hustle, it was kind of cool. Kind of a shame what happened to the guy who used it, though.

I was always quite sure they were mainly weight training for martial artists and could only be used in fights as a not so great shield on the arm. Otherwise I could never figure out how you'd really transfer force through your hands from the rings themselves. Just seemed like they'd hit your hand harder than your opponent anyway.
@voltronimusprime3833

Depending on how the rings sit on your arm, you could theoretically use them to add a second impact to a strike. It would work similarly to a "Dead Blow Hammer" which has a hollow head made of a hard plastic, filled with sand. This reduces bouncing and disperses the impact force. Upon hitting a surface, the hammer body will want to bounce backwards, but the sand takes a little bit longer to get to the front of the hammer, which helps cancel out any backwards momentum.

As a long time practitioner of the Lama Pai kung fu system, we use the rings in our Qi Gung and kung fu forms(mainly an individual choice on what forms...). The benefits of focused concentration on movements at various speeds helps with understanding why we block and strike as we do. It aids in incorporating muscles that otherwise would take longer for a student to bring into their training. Additionally I found it helps with focusing on breathing correctly. Rarely have I used them as a weapon with the primary exception being if I was attacked while training then I reacted with a block using the ringed portion of my arm(s). I find that the traditional training methods also helps me with being connected to the so many of traditions of my system. While there are more convenient tools to train with, I frequently find the less convenient methods are effective for more than just that thing I am working on at that time...

If you swing your arm loosely but heavily like a bucket of water going in a complete circle at the right speed and force the water does not fall out even when upside down. You can feel your arms heavy with blood going to the end of the limb and resting while swung but with out holding the bucket of water. The weight of the rings shooting forward has some of the same effect. You could even get on a mystical level with iron being in your blood.

I use the movements of my arms often to balance and shift inertia for better control of movement overall. sometimes it feels like swimming through the air. I have never been formally trained in martial arts but have sparred occasionally with those who are training. I've also watched a lot of martial arts movies through and beyond childhood. Every once in a while I will practice my own freestyle form solo. All this is to say movements of the wrist can influence your entire body in movement and I imagine these rings probably strengthen muscles all over and not just the arm muscles themselves.

That doesn't work in straight punches because of inertia of the rings. They are more going against than forward the movement. Hence why they are used as a training tool. Although they could serve this purpase for haymakers or wide circular movements. But... That would most likely end up destroying your joints. Your hands have less mass than your arms. That's why you can take the impact of punching. Add to much unnatural weight. And you are gonna tear down the structure. Which is why a weapon is often designed to minimize the impact of the user of the tool. But amplified force on the receiving end

@@rifasclub a stick can do just the same. Because believe it or not, a "good hit" with anything hard can kill or break bones. The only difference is that you'll have more control of a stick than you would with-- what is essentially, a less effective stick with its other half dangling about. Enemies don't just stand around allowing you to get a "good hit" they WILL take advantage of weaknesses, and that's why nunchucks are ineffective, it has more weaknesses than strengths regardless of how trained you are with them. (also centrifugal force doesn't help its "damage". You'll be swinging from your elbow in most situations, meaning all the chainlink does is dampen the strike that would have been more powerful if your weapon was a whole stick.)

That last clip with the big rings I watched that recently. It's called crippled avengers and the strange dub on prime was hilariously weird. Also pretty fun but mostly goofy

Held stance is to register position for kata... KATA in slow form is to register the sequence... The form in constant flex is to register endurance... The flex in constant challenge is to register stability... The stability in constant challenge is to register proper balance... The use of rings on both arms & legs are to register everything more quickly - all at once, and is why it is started first in stance endurance_advancing through the aforementioned phases of training

Johnson Sifu! Brass rings are the best! Hard to find now! Yau Kung Moon are the Five Stars, winners at Lion Dancing competition (Tat Wong Sifu) tournament 😳❤ best ring fighting is “Na Cha the Great” 😬

I study Shorinji Kempo and have substituted the iron rings for wrist and ankle weights weighing from .5 to 1 KG proper and a pair of 1-kilo powerwalking hand weights which I hold in my hands so I am carrying 3.5 kilos on each arm. I have found them to be very effective for arm and shoulder strengthening.

I like that Feng in tekken wears the rings and uses them like big ol bludgeons. It's a good classic look to have the rings draped over the wrists

I've never seen Steven Seagal or Roger moore use these Kung-Fu rings in a movie. Missed opportunity.

And I'm sure that during the period in history where carrying a weapon was prohibited, that such rings COULD and probably were used as an impromptu weapon or defensive measure. Much like staves, scythes and other utilitarian tools have been used as makeshift weapons throughout history.

That's interesting; I thought they just used them in marvel because it would have looked really gaudy and silly in this adaptation for the mandarin to be blinged out with the 10 huge finger rings he had in the comics

It figure since the king fu rings act more like weights worn in the arms to create strength a more versatile weapon (defensive on this case) would be a pair of gauntlets instead of metal rings that will move around offering little to no protection against metal weapons 🤷
