Tit Sin Kuen was incorporated into Hung Gar training by Grandmaster Wong Fei Hung after he learned it from Lam Fook Sing, a student of Tit Kiu Sam. Training with Tit Sin Kuen set improves blood circulation, enhances deep breathing, invigorating the internal organs and promotes the development of internal energy, or Ch'i, necessary further advancement in martial arts. "Shaolin Kung Fu is the best, both the Northern and Southern they both have equal merits."

@PaMuShin We don't even have any photos of Wong Fei Hung. The one simple portrait photo that was thought to be him was later to be confirmed by his descendants to be a photo of his son (who was said to be a spitting image of his father, hence the confusion). Lam Sai Wing did produce some photographic manuals with himself performing the forms (of which there were also less expensive versions that replaced the photos with drawings); you can still buy modern facsimiles of both versions of these manuals.

This is great stuff, I lived and practiced martial arts in HK for over a decade but this brought new stuff to me. Kowloon Park in Tsim Sha Tsui is a very common place for teachers to meet with their students especially if they do not have a Kwoon of their own. To a lesser extent Victoria park in Causeway bay serves the same purpose. In addition to Hung Gar, Wing Chun, and Choy Li Fut there is a big Tang Lang (praying mantis ) community beyond Chow gar southern mantis, with Lam Kam Wing's students (7 star mantis) and the students of Chiu Chuk Kai (Tai Chi mantis) being notable. I hope you get to cover these in detail in future. Keep up the great work in spreading the history and traditions of Kungfu. I think also its a record to have 9 comments on traditional martial arts without some one asking "but could you use it for MMA tournaments". Looks like your audience is educated to understand that Kungfu is more than about who can beat who up in the ring. It's about traditions, respect, self discipline, and about preserving something larger than yourself so that these things can continue, and be preserved to help future generations find their way. Respect to all.

Mak Sifu is on point about the importance and the tragic lost of emphasis on solid stances in today's traditional Kung Fu!! A good solid base stance (really "sitting" on your center of gravity) and a smooth transition into another stance in motion to aid any upper body movement is pivotal to all Southern Styles Kung Fu (or just in any combat sports!)

Mak Sifu’s explanation on Hung Gar’s history was excellent. I knew that the hand signs were linked to anti-Qing but to see the explanations, that was cool. Mak Sifu’s discussion on how training in long movements coild be used in short movements and the importance of stances were also enlightening. Looking forward to the next episodes!

Excellent vid. Also, Bruce Lee saw the benefit of altering the stance in order to be more stable and ready to transition if needed, as compared with the wing chun type stance with the legs side-by side and bent knees. So basically, evolution. Taking what is ultra effective already and evolving it more.

I think the master here makes a really good point. Mainly in pointing out the need to train a larger range of motion in order to develop power. In the Shaolin kung fu I learned from Wu Nanfang of the Wu Gulun branch, the foundations essentially focus on building up the range of motion of the torso. Essentially, the greater the range of your torso movement, the greater the power. The limbs don't need to make big movements to generate more power, but the body does. Big movements of the limbs may be helpful at a certain stage as they may help your attention to develop towards the body movement. Having big limb movements and no torso movement would not be good though in this school of thought. Ideally, the limb movements become minimal and more precise while the torso movement becomes larger and more agile. This is my understanding, thanks.

Totally, I always say starting with ma bu to gong bu punches makes learning a cross much easier and helps you develop more power. People say I punch harder than expected for my weight, and I put that down to my traditional training.
