I was there. First ever gig. 14yrs old. It may sound cliched, but I felt really safe as though I was part of one big family. The scariest part was the surging crowd on the wet, muddy field during Maiden. I was literally fighting to stay on my feet. Unfortunately someone fell and I remember stepping on them just trying not to go down. Thankfully some adults made space in the crowd and helped them up. I still feel guilty for that, but was just a kid. I moved back up the hill for the rest of the set. Metal crowds are the best. As were the 80's in many ways. X

Me too, A SAD DAY, but my 1st Donington at 16, so exciting, and scary, but it was fab, all in one day. Now they have the 2 day "download" which is rubbish and too long compared to how Donington was, and I echo your memories exactly Mark. Todays millenial metal fans don't know their born! WE had the best experiences in the 80s &90s

I was 17, my first concert and just as you say the crowd was surging forwards and backwards and it was hard to stay on your feet in the dark, we were towards the back of the crowd about 3/4 of the way up from the stage and it was mad even towards the back. Can you remember when they stopped playing and bruce got everyone to take two steps back cause the people at the front were getting pushed against the barriers. I'm now 51 lol.

My God this brings back memories .Me and two friends (All only 16 years old) Our first ever concert. I Remember when things starting getting bad during the rain early in the day, People where slipping and falling during Guns and Roses,We three held on to each other for dear life and got back up the mud bath hill.Only after Maidens show the police made the announcement that two lads had died .I think I got home around 1am to the biggest hugs my parent's ever gave me, Of course with no mobile phones back then they were sick with worry Sad two were lost after a monumental concert.Oh and for the record Axl Rose tried to get everyone to move back but it was ian impossible task sadly.

17 year old me was there, haha. Can't believe it was 32 years ago man. I was very near the front - 107,000 people - when Maiden were on stage. There were times in the day when I slipped and nearly ended up on the ground but someone was there to help me up immediately. And there were times when people around me slipped and went down. Then I was there to help them up immediately. I really felt like part of a family that day. The whole day was awesome. I didn't know about the tragedy of the 2 guys who got crushed until I got home. My folks were frantic with worry...no mobile phones back then of course. Then I saw it on the news too. So thanks for uploading this footage of one of the best gigs I've ever been to. And R.I.P. to Landon & Alan - 2 of our own that were lost that day sadly. Up the Irons. So it shall be written...and so it shall be done. This is the way...I have spoken !

@@grahamtaylor8912 - I'm so glad I was born in '71. Being that age we caught the rise of so many great metal bands. It was a golden age for sure. And we were there at the birth of thrash too. I remember buying Metallica & Megadeth's 1st albums man. But, going back to Donington...it was an awesome lineup that day. Due to traffic, our coach was late getting there. The 4 of us could see people running across the fields to get to the site. We decided to do the same. We caught about half of Helloween's set. So I managed to get a ticket for their tour later in the year at Cardiff and they were great. Proper sound too that time. Maiden absolutely owned Donington on the night too. Well happy that I'm on the back cover of The Clairvoyant 7" single ! Looking for the coach back to Wales after the show was a fucking nightmare though. Choking down diesel fumes whilst running frantically between coaches, haha. Found it just as it was getting ready to leave too thank fuck ! Also managed to get tickets for Maiden's tour later in the year in Newport too. Sweeeet !

@@sleepwalker2210 Yup growing up back then was awesome. I used to go to gigs all the time. Saxon, Dio, Scorpions, Rush, Deep Purple, Samson, Blackfoot, Maiden, Metallica, Uriah Heep .. I was always at gigs ,When Maiden opened at Donington with Moonchild and all the lights were going crazy in time with that synth intro, that was a sight to behold. Huge crowd that year too as you said , biggest ever at Monsters of Rock.. And were Maiden loud or what? Holy shit the size of that PA,! Lol I got split up from my two mates watching ADDC at Donington in 84 and somehow after the gig ended I found them near that little castle building at the entrance of the park when everyone was leaving. It was pitch black and 80 thousand people were pouring out.. Fuck knows how I bumped into them. Cool that you are on the back of that single cover.

I was there. I saw the crush during the GnR set, but wasn’t aware that anyone had been hurt badly. The irony was, me and my mates were standing to the right of the stage and there was a space in the centre that some of the crowd could have spilled over into. I remember seeing St John’s crew trying to get to the bottom of the mud slide to the left of the stage. I think some scaffolding had fallen too.

Fascinating. I guess this was filmed from the sound tower? I was there. My second gig. Maiden were everything for me then. The memories are getting fuzzier. The Bailey Bros were a pair of twats lol Megadeth were great for me and Lars came on and sang Anarchy in the UK with them. I loved Helloween at the time (touted as 'the next Maiden'). GnR were of course the big news but i remember being slightly underwhelmed tbh. I watched the crowd surge in front of me and managed to keep back. The weather was atrocious and of course the two guys lost their lives during the crush for GnR which was just horrendous. I remember Axl screaming at the crowd to back the fuck up. Kiss were so dull, and I loved Diamond DLR but his music didnt suit a rainy day in the Midlands lol. For most people there it was just another rain, piss and puke soaked, poorly organised gig (some people wore crash helmets the whole gig due to the bottles of piss raining down - experts). But we didn't even think about safety really, not that we didn't care, it just wasn't even on the radar. It was before the days of H&S being a major concern at outdoor concerts of any kind, or being at the forefront of anyone's minds really. I'm not making any excuses for what happened, no-one should die because of a music concert, whether watching or playing. But that year was probably a turning point in terms of concert organisation professionalism, and the realisation of the need for it. You can see the different between all the big festivals around that time, Reading, Glastonbury too. There were too many of us there, it was too wet and slippy and muddy, the speakers had collapsed on one side and were held up by a fork lift to my memory. It was a bollocks - BUT, as a 16 yr old seeing all those bands there was simply no understanding of how serious things got. I saw a mate just before Iron Maiden (I had moved way back behind the sound tower and to the right as there was loads of space) and he was white as a sheet and said it was bloody scary. But again, I just stood there sang along and headbanged while he sat on the floor. It was an unforgettable experience for me, and we met a guy on the coach up from Surrey whose parents lived in Castle Donnington, so we slept on their floor (to this day I have no earthly idea what the plan was outside of that) and made us bacon sandwiches in the morning. I get the impression they took in the waifs and strays of Donnington every year! Thanks to Neil Hatfield and his parents!!

Interesting to read the many individuals stories who attended the event back in 1988, and as a 31 year old myself - I thought Sonisphire 2014 was bad for the immense crowd surfing and surges (I also attended Download 2013) when the band first came on stage. RIP to the two who lots their lives during the original event back in 1988.

@Liam, I understand what you mean, I was one of those 16 year olds, first ever festival, went to mainly see Maiden and I have watched many metal festivals over 30 odd years, but nothing beats the 80's festival crowds. bruce sure struggled on these mid-late 80s tours......out of key, out of breath. still puts on a great show, but his voice was in ruins after the world piece tour.....literally every show from world slavery, somewhere on tour and 7th tour has atrocious vocal performances. blame the band for playing the songs way too fast, management for making him sing sometimes 6 nights in a row and harris for pacing the sets with zero consideration to how the human voice works.

It was a 80 mania...playing faster and faster. In the case of Maiden dime tracks lose epicness... Adrian was particularly fed up with that. Fortunately nowadays they play these songs (fear of the dark, 7th son, phamtom of the opera, rime.... Slower so epic comes back
