It's all meant to be narrated by the same person. He's condemned to be hanged and at the beginning of the song he is pondering the inevitable. As he's marched towards the gallows he finds himself gibbering and terrified. But as his execution becomes inevitable his belief in an afterlife grows stronger so that by the end of the song he's jubilant that he is going to a better place and that life on Earth is merely "an illusion".

Well, you definitely picked the iconic 1982 performance of this song! I suggest picking something from the 2018-19 tour for your next Maiden reaction, just so you can see how strong they're still going. (The drummer you saw in this video was replaced back in the 80s, and they've got three guitarists now.) Goodness knows they've still got that energy! Bruce Dickinson, the singer, he's also a published author (2 novels and an autobiography), a brewer, a competitive fencer (turned down the chance to try for the British Olympic Team due to touring commitments), a commercial airline pilot who's flown the band on tour in their 747 "Ed Force One", and oh yeah, he beat throat cancer back in 2015.

@@scythianking7315 Because I personally hope like hell that I have half the energy and stamina they do when I reach their ages! (Yes, they're currently all between 62 and 68.) And no, I don't think Bruce's voice is gone. A little changed from the 80s, sure, but considering it's been almost 40 years AND he came back after the throat cancer, I think it's absolutely worth checking out. Also, the 2018-19 tour pulled some old gems out of mothballs, like Flight of Icarus and Sign of the Cross.

My big sister and her boyfriend took me to see them when i was 13 in 1988 , row 3, deaf for 3 days ive seen them 15+ times since and they are still the best live band going. Bruce is a recognised polymath. Singer, fencer, businessman, author, historian, pilot and a genuinely good guy. 40 years later and after throat cancer he can still smash this song out the park (as everyone knows if you haven't heard it yet the shows not finished) and then the lights come up and you leave whistling along to monty python always look on the bright side of life. (And yes I still see them with my sister and my now brother in law(25 years) but i take my kids now too)

Iron Maiden are one of the legends of Heavy Metal. I saw them for the first time on monster of rock in 88 in Tilburg the Netherland, i have seen them 7x live in concert from 88 to 2006. Other great songs are caught somewhere in time, powerslave, wasted years, revelations, the trooper, number of the beast. Clansman, dance of the death, alexander the great, empire off the clouds, paschendale, phantom of the opera and I can go on and on... keep up the good work.

First, I'd like to say that you are soooo beautiful and I love your reactions. I've been a Maiden fan since I was 10 years old, in 1980, and I heard their debut, self-titled album. I have seen them on every tour since when they come to London and they just get better with age, like a good Scotch whisky. If you're up for a history lesson as you listen to great music, may I suggest The Trooper, Alexander the Great, Paschendale and Empire of the Clouds for future Maiden reactions. I agree with all the comments that say Iron Maiden are best seen live, but with these songs you may want to start with the studio versions and follow the lyrics. This will allow you to understand the concept of the song and appreciate how well the music and lyrics capture the story. The same goes for The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. You rock, beautifully🤘

Listen (for example) to "Empire of the clouds" (their corrent one), or "Seventh son of a seventh son", or "Fear of the dark", or "Paschendale", or "Where the wild wind blows" or... or...
