Sounds like a horse galloping at times and a history lesson at other times, Bruce Dickinson’s vocals are awesome. The two perspectives are perfect. I am full blooded American Indian and this one really speaks to me in regards to my ancestors and I appreciate the story telling and the arrangement not to mention the musicianship of this song. Great reaction!!

I appreciate that the two perspectives are not at all presented as morally equivalent. It was eye opening and strangely (given the music) sobering to listen to as a white teen growing up in the Mountain West in the 1980s.

Youre right when you say it sounds like a horse galloping. Steve Harris’s bass playing style it’s called galloping bass.

I also like the dual perspective, but it is not clear WHO is running for the hills.....the natives, the soldiers, or settlers.

In the late 80's when I was in high school, I had a cool history teacher, that would incorporate Iron Maiden songs into his teaching, because a lot of their songs are history based. Man that teacher was genius for teaching that way, because it kept our attention on what he was teaching.

@@warhorse58gt It's a one sided view of history honestly. There's a great documentary on youtube (about three hours long) called The Indian Wars which does a much better job. "Native americans" were not one cohesive unit or innocents with one singular goal any more than Europeans were. As with all things, history is complex.
@daviddavies3637

@@warhorse58gt You forget that it applies to Americans because they were Brits until they gained independence. They and their families were the primary beneficiaries before independence. So, are you saying that America's founders or the colonists engaged in genocide? Don't try to make out the history of the region now known as the US started in 1776. Besides, those same people Americans revere and their descendants carried out the exact same policies for more than a century after independence.

@@warhorse58gt “Out on the plains we gave them hell” suggests the song is about the United States’s interaction with native peoples. I don’t know of any wars on the great plains involving the British army.

Was a young teenager when I heard this. (I'm 54 now) I wasn't particularly interested in "heavy" music like this but I clearly remember it dawning on me that this was a song about something real. It had a message and told a real story. This song is why I now have a 37 year-old Iron Maiden tattoo and more Maiden t-shirts than I'll ever realistically need 😄 😁

That album cover for Iron Maiden's 3rd album 'The number of the beast' in 1982 was originally intended for their 1981 single 'Purgatory'... but the art was too good for a single, according to the management, so they saved it for the next Maiden album. 'Run to the hills' was a crucial Iron Maiden single in 1982, cos it introduced their new singer Bruce Dickinson to their fanbase... The prior Maiden singer Paul Di'Anno had been w/ Iron Maiden since the club days and recorded 2 albums w/ the band and established their initial career. Going into 1981, touring became a priority for Maiden, and tour dates began to line up fast all over the world... and Paul Di'Anno was under pressure to perform night after night. He couldn't cope w/ the workload and turned to drugs, smokes & alcohol while touring... By the fall of '81, he was burnt out and the band & Di'Anno parted ways. Steve Harris (bass) was worried cos Iron Maiden was established w/ Paul Di'Anno on vocals... a new singer would have to win over their fans. Also, they had to write all new songs from scratch... Maiden had toured w/ a band called Samson in the club days, and their singer Bruce Dickinson had been interested in joining Iron Maiden... so when they asked him, he jumped at the opportunity. Of course, Dickinson found himself frustrated in the studio under Maiden's producer Martin Birch, who wanted a more demanding vocal performance on the record than he was used to. Iron Maiden had a tour in 1982 and put out the single 'Run to the hills' first... and it took off in the UK. Fans immediately embraced the 'new' Maiden sound and singer Bruce Dickinson... As a result, the album 'The number of the beast' was Iron Maiden's first record to hit #1 on the UK charts and sell platinum in the US.

Two suggestions: for a happier song, go with "Wasted Years". For a live performance song, "The Clansman en vivo". Note that it is not about the KKK, its not about about racism, its about Scottish clans fighting for their freedom.

the clansman is basically the movie "Braveheart", just as "Man on The Edge" is "Falling Down" and "The Edge of Darkness" is "Apocalypse Now". i mean, bravehear is about william wallace and what the brits did to him, but i'm pretty sure they watched those movies before they wrote those songs, lol

Greetings and Love from Germany again. Thats what i call a 'Reaction'. But let me start from the beginning. Over two years ago i saw my first 'reaction video' by accident. I didn't know what thats all about and slowly i got it. Since then i'm desperately trying to find someone who represents 'Reactions'. What i found was people that listen, move a little and at the end everyone told me the same. How amazing the band is, how much they enjoyed it and goodbye. Oh, and that i have to become a patreon. Not really intressted in the history of the band or in the background of their music. Thats totaly the opisite of what i was looking for. Nearly every reacter i tried, (more than 300, i guess) failed. But, out of nowwhere i found you, buddy. The first video i had to watch was your AC/DC reaction. I couldnt believe you did the song "Ride On'. No one else did it. I've searched for someone with Passion, with the goal to find himself new music, new bands. To learn whats behind the band, their music, their background, to dive deep into the lyrics. What i searched for and finaly found, was you, my friend. I knew it, as you said: I have to listen the whole Album. Not skipping a single song. Skipping songs would be a crime." Unbelievable, you have my deepest respect. Well i'm 50 years old now. In the eighties i became a metalhead. What a great time i had. I've searched for that one guy who takes me back in time. To re- live my feelings, for bringing back memories. You are now like i once was. They way you react, just like me..thats so emotional and crazy. Wait, its getting better. Iron Maiden. I'm a MaidenManiac. My first listen was the Studio Version of Hallowed be thy Name. And so on. Mostly the Studio Albums. There wasn't much live stuff arround in the 80s. No live TV Shows with Metal, no KZbin, you know. You do the same, studio. Awesome. Everyone goes like..'you have to do Maiden live'..bla, bla, bla. Respect again, buddy. You say: "No, that makes no sense. I want to get into the band deep and from their beginning." The expirience of seeing Iron Maiden live on stage, what they are able to do live, with songs you already knew is priceless. All your emotions and feelings...i will feel it too. And i have to thank you for that, deep from my heart. I hope could write down what i mean, so that it makes sense to you. I was lazy and bad in school. Especialy in Englisch. And you're right, Maiden always paint a picture with their Melodys and their Sound, and so that it fits with the theme/lyrics. I would suggest to you, if you allow, a song from their latest Album 'Senjutsu'. The Studio/Audio Version of 'Hell on Earth' with lyrics. This song is perfect for our situation right now. So well writen and with an impact to wake up Human Mankind. Back in the nineties i thought the same about Michael Jacksons 'Earth Song'. Sadwise people didn't learned a single thing. I have to say Maidens Masterpiece is an 12 minutes long track you have to take on. Link below.: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmq1eJ-NaZWap9k Wow,..so thats all for now, my Bloodbrother. Thanks again, you made my weekend...Peace & Stay Safe, mein Freund...from Köln/Cologne. .UP THE IRONS

Fun Maiden Fact 1: Paul D'Anno was their original singer. He was on the first album called "Killers". But he was not as versatile or musical as the band really wanted. Bruce Dickinson heard them at a club one night and made a comment that he should be singing for them. Paul D'anno dared Bruce to come on stage and sing. Bruce did and Paul was fired on the spot. Fun Maiden Fact 2: Bass player Steve Harris is one of the founding members and major songwriter. His signature "galloping" bass sound is achieved using an unorthodox 1-3-2/3/1-3-2 beat that repeats over and over. When done right and on tempo it definitely sounds like a horse galloping at full speed. Steve Harris was very underappreciated back in the day.

If you want to get a better feel for the world of heavy metal, I highly suggest seeing some Irom Maiden live shows. In addition to the melodies, you will see a great performance from the band and wonderful interaction with the audience.

They are great story tellers. My fav is 'Aces High'. It's about the British Air Force during WWII. Every time I hear the song, it feels like I'm in the cockpit of the plane.

Hey Biz. I've been an Iron Maiden fan since close to the beginning. I went to my first show back in 1983. Yes, in that old, haha. I really think you should start doing your reactions to the live versions. You will then have an even higher opinion and appreciation for their music. It doesn't matter which song you start with. I can almost promise, YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED. UP THE IRONS!!!

Thanks Giving happened before the Indian wars. When settlers first came the dined in friendship and peace with the natives. What went wrong was even though the tribes understood territory and peace and war with other tribes they had know concept of property ownership and borders. Kind of like when the setters bought New York from them for $24. Then put up fences and grew rich. As the white population and civilization grew thus the conflict.

“Rime of the Ancient Mariner” “the number of the beast” (about a nightmare, not satanic) “Killers” “Wrathchild”, last two being from early Iron Maiden with a different vocalist Paul DiAno…

Iron maiden is faster than other bands, and is the start/precursor of a movement called "power metal" that is all about fast metal songs

I live across from train tracks, and I don't mind it because I love trains, bit sometimes it's like the conductor is feeling aggressive with blaring the horn, and the train going over the tracks can sound eerie and haunting in the early morning hours.
