No one in Iron Maiden is a Satanist. They are famous for writing songs about literary figures and historical events. From Wikipedia - "According to the song's writer, bassist and band-founder Steve Harris, it was inspired by a nightmare he had after watching the film Damien: Omen II, in addition to the poem Tam o' Shanter by Robert Burns.".

The meaning of the song is pretty clear, people can say poem this, and movie that, but it's very hard to misinterpret the lyrics, these people believe in Satan, the general public need to come to grips with the reality, and not offer up excuses for other peoples beliefs.

Dude, totally! I've been suggesting the song on several occasions myself just like a few others like "Wasted Years" for another angle. The answer for another flawless Maiden anthem though should be "The Trooper". It's Rock'n'Roll and Heavy Metal on point. For catchy satanism though I'd recommend "Come to the Sabbath" by BLACK WIDOW and "In league with Satan" by VENOM. That'd be a nice pick up on the discussion, don't you think?

Yeah, there's even the line "This can't go on, I must inform the law". I would not see a real satanic band singing that. It's like Alice Cooper's songs, they are made for fun. The devil is usualy the bad guy... cause he is! 90% of the bands with occult imagery and lyrics are not satanists anyway. It's just that you can't play that sort of music and sing about flowers and blue sky.

Iron Maiden was well known for writing fictitious stories that revolve around a multitude of ideas. This song is about someone witnessing a satanic ritual and not knowing what to do about it. It was a time when it was more common to write stories for songs instead of personal experiences... it becomes more obvious should you choose to listen to more of their songs like “Powerslave”, “Somewhere in Time” or “Aces High”.

Sori you had it right. Iron Maiden are a ripping band, they are serious musicians but dont take themselves too seriously like some of the metals bands that came later. Bruce the singer isnt a dummy - he is also a pilot that flies the band around the world in their 747-400. When he wrote the song lyrics he would of been going for a feel that grabs attention of the audience but not necessarily researched to the hilt. These days you would find them on the golf course when not working, not devil worshipping. Back in the day they would of been branded devil worshipers early on so they would of just played on that perception but anyone who listened to them knew it wasn't true. Vin this Iron Maiden guitar line up were know as a couple of the best in the day. Dave Murray is one of the smoothest guitar players of this era, you should check him out.

C'mon Vin. This is just a fun song with basically silly lyrics (in old-time horror movie style) about a guy who comes across a ritual and the protagonist thinks (and maybe) he's losing his mind. The verse (misquoted as it was) just tells us that a human will be able to recognize evil and even the beast, This is just fun power-Metal antics with scathing guitar solos and a solid bassline driving the whole thing.

Iron Maiden are anything but Satanic lol As a comment said previously this song is basically the product of the the founder and bassist Steve Harris having a nightmare after having watched Damien the Omen: II and reading a scary poem. The lyrics are basically about his questioning whether or not his dream is really happening on is it just that.....a dream. Iron Maiden is a very thematic Band that writes songs about events in history without any political or social bias. They also tell stories in their songs such as Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Can I Play with Madness. If you watch any of their live shows on YT you will see what they are all about live. They have built a global following for a reason since 1980.

Now days, they tour occasionally and Dickinson and McBrain spend their time piloting their own 727's around to soccer games. They worked the market, and became successful doing it. Good for them. I think Stu does a fine job but I wish he had tried less to sound like Matt on that track and used more of harsh vocals he brought to the table from his time with Into Eternity. My guess is Jon (who seems pretty particular about things) didn't want him to deviate to far from how the song was originally done. But I think Matt does some really interesting things with his voice on that live version from Athens, almost taking on a death metal vocal style on a few lines of the song. It really enhances the overall feel of the song being a journey through hell.

Greetings from Sweden, I love your reactions, and also this band. Iron Maiden is not a satanic band, the drummer is Christian, not sure about the others though. But anyway, their songs are often theatrical and they tell a story in most, many times from old books and movies or myths and legends, and their live performance are one of the best to be seen. A funny thing about the singer, Bruce Dickinson, is that he also is a children's book author, and on his solo albums he have covered a few psalms in a great way. You should really react to his version of "Jerusalem" on his solo album "The Chemical Wedding" album from 1998, and also to the Iron Maiden song "Revelations" on the "Piece of Mind" album from 1983. Thanks again for a great channel... Cheers...

I don't see it in the comments so I don't know if it's been mentioned, but the reason this song sounds so "upbeat" is because musically it's based on (or inspired by) When the Saints Come Marching In.

This song was influenced by the 1978 movie Damien: Omen II, which is about a 13-year-old Antichrist. It was written by Iron Maiden bass player Steve Harris who had a dream (nightmare) after seeing the movie. Steve Harris said "Basically, this song is about a dream. It's not about devil worship."

For fun, the song is based on a nightmare the bass blayer (Steve Harris) had. He quickly wrote a song about the nightmare, and the song went together quickly... The number of the song on the album is to place it first on the B side (it was obviously made for working well on vinyl). That said, the next song is Run To The Hills, a song about the treatment of the native americans at the hands of the europeans. Iron Maiden often sing about history and such.

If you want an epic style song, the first that comes to mind is "Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner". My English teacher played it in class when we covered the poem, and that's fact! If you want something that's not as long, you can't go wrong with "Alexander The Great" or "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" either.

Iron Maiden is working a lot with shifting narrative perspectives in their songs. 1 song, 2-3 narrative perspectives. You can particularly see this in the "Charlot" series. Try "Charlot The Harlot", or maybe "22 Acacia Avenue" to see what I mean. Some passages will absolutely shock you, while others will impress you with their level of genuine tenderness, care and love they show. And all in the same song.

Have you guys ever read the story "Young Goodman Brown" by Nathaniel Hawthorne? This song is close in plot to that. The narrator is witnessing something that is hard for him to believe due to the people involved being normal, pious people in their daily lives, but worship the devil at night. Bassist Steve Harris wrote most of the lyrics, and they were usually influenced by classic literature.

The song was written by the bassist Steve Harris. The inspiration of the song was when he watched the movie The Omen and later had a nightmare. This song was his nightmare. Maiden is not satanic by any means. On the contrary. They are well educated. A lot of their songs are from books they read or movies they watched and a lot of historical events. Hell on their last album Steve wrote a song dedicated to Robin Williams called Tears of a Clown. They wrote a song called To Tame A Land. It's from the sci fi story Dune. When I first heard it I decided to read the Dune series. So They are kind of an educational band

Not every Maiden album is a true concept album. 7th Son is for sure, and some others might have some themes that carry through an album. But on Powerslave, there's no connection between Aces High, Powerslave, and Rime of the Ancient Mariner that I can see (or any of the other songs for that matter).

That's funny that this was such a taboo song in your circles Vin. Funny in that the number of the beast is 616. To me, the phrase "It is a human number" states that you have to look at it through Jewish numerology. Since they were under Roman control they would mask talking bad about political figures by turning names into numerals (gematria). As I remember, 616 relates to Nero who to the Jews at the time was as horrible as a devil.

Wanted to mention since it looks like no one else sees it this way in the comments. The song appears to show the protagonist go from merely an observer of the ritual, to being taken over by the evil it brings forth. It starts with him being confused and wanting to stop it somehow, then progresses to him confessing to feeling drawn to it, then finally speaking as if he is the evil itself, as if possessed. Hence in the end him saying he'll possess your body and make you burn.

I saw a movie once portraying an early '80s rock band's life. They were in the middle of writing a song. So one guy says to the song writer: "This is good so far, but you have to write a few more stuff into it. Like death, cemetery or that the bitch is dumb. 'Cause that will make people scare." :) Sometimes songs are just made for fun to fit for a certain genre. Not all songs should be taken seriously. And a lot of '80s metal bands were like this. Not that Maiden is not a serious band, but this song was certainly written more for fun than for seriousness. There's a cool series of videos of Stevie T. Who shows how to write a certain metal song (like Death Metal, Power Metal, etc.) the cookie cutter style. Pretty insane to see, that he chooses words out of a given set, that fits that sub-genre and a few guitar chords, plus a fitting drum beat. And in practically 5 minutes he writes a full song. Some of those are actually pretty good. But those songs are more for entertainment than actually teaching something wise. ;)

That last line is the devil "speaking", saying that he's going to possess the narrator of the story(the purpose of the ritual/sacrifice) to make his evil take its course on earth. It's just old-school horror film type storytelling. The music is epic-ally awesome.

Pay attention to the lyrics at the beginning! Basically, the song describes how John wrote the apocalypse! It's John, the writer of Apocalypse, that says "I left alone, my mind was blank, I needed time to think, to.......". Steve Harris (the bassist who wrote the lyrics - as well as the tune) is a genius!!!!! Back to 1982!!!!! That was a time of true metal sagas presented to the world!!!! Sorry, for my English!
