So excited that you're embarking on the MCU journey. I want to echo the others who suggest that you continue with all of the movies in theatrical release order. In case it isn't obvious, I should point out that Tony Stark confuses Stan Lee (playing "guy at party") with "Hef" (the late Hugh Hefner, founder of Playboy magazine, who was alive at the time). Tony's line is, "You look great, Hef."

One quick note: Terrence Howard, the actor who played Rhodey, opted not to return after a big, very dramatic contract dispute, so he's replaced from "Iron Man 2" onward by Don Cheadle.

You are one of the very few who got the Vanity Fair joke. Well done you! In the comics, Iron Man really is seen as a separate person who is his bodyguard, even though it's Tony. Classic superhero secret identity. The writers here recognized that Tony really is that much of a narcissist. Fun Fact: the scientist Stane yells at about Stark building the first suit in a cave is none other than Peter Billingsley, Ralphie in A Christmas Story.

I've always been in two minds about the end of movie "I am Iron Man" confession because yeah, on the one hand, Tony is good and he knows it and he kind of needs other people to know it. On the other hand, he's just spent the last few months since returning from Afghanistan talking about accountability, and you can't really be accountable to anyone if you're flying around with a secret identity, you know? I love this movie so damn much, it'll always be my favourite ^.^ Loved your reaction Addie, enjoy the MCU ride!

So little insight the MCU stands for the Marvel Cinematic Universe a single shared universe where characters cross and meet each other just like in the Marvel comics. This allows Marvel to build up characters and stories across a range of films from solo films like Iron Man to big team ups like The Avengers only possible because of a shared universe. As you may know the Spider-Man films you watched are not apart of the MCU simply because of legal reasons with Sony owning the movie rights to Spider-Man and of course they released before the MCU was created. As different studios owned different rights to different Marvel characters they all kind of existed separate from each other with zero connections between films from referencing events that happened in other Marvel movies to making nods to other characters something the comic's do all the time. The MCU aimed to achieve so when watching the other MCU movies watch out for little nods and references there's so many small details that hint towards other movies and characters. On the topic of studios Marvel Studios actually came to Sony in hopes of adding a certain building to the Amazing Spider-Man 2 New York Skyline connecting Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man to the MCU but I believe the request was too late. Amazing Spider-Man and the new X-Men movies were all releasing at the same time as MCU films so of course Marvel wanted to somehow connect Sony's Spider-Man to the MCU having the big reveal that The Amazing Spider-Man was set in the MCU all along it's just Spider-Man was doing his own thing in the background. X-Men on the other hand was already too deep into it's own universe so trying to connect it to the MCU would be far too difficult. Back in the early 2000s people did try to connect Sam Rami's Spider-Man with X-Men and Fantastic Four but it's never been confirmed if these movies are connected it's really up to us the viewer as they never reference each other. All we know is people behind the scenes tried to connect all the 2000s films together into a single universe but they didn't go through with it so we never got to see Toby's Spider-Man meet the Fantastic Four who were active in Manhattan along with Punisher, Daredevil and the X-Men. Spider-Man could've referenced events from the X-Men movies while Spider-Man could've been referenced in an X-Men movie small stuff like a newspaper headline mentioning Spider-Man. Fantastic Four Baxter Building is located in Manhattan so they could've featured the building in a Spider-Man film small stuff like this to tie everything together. In the comic's Fantastic Four, X-Men, Spider-Man, and The Avengers all exist together so having a movie universe without the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man would feel very strange. Marvel thankfully made a deal with Sony so this is why there's three MCU Spider-Man films with Tom Holland playing the role. Like I mentioned above Andrew Garfield could've been the MCU Spider-Man but the building was never added into the film so instead they just created a new Spider-Man. In March 2019 Disney bought Fox which means Disney now own the rights to The Fantastic Four and X-Men allowing Marvel Studios to use these characters in the MCU it's only the case of how they'll be introduced and when. Marvel Universes Fox X-Men Universes 2000 to 2019 (X-Men to Deadpool 2) - The X-Men movies in terms of continuity are all over the place which is why I used "Universes" soft reboots and timeline related stuff. Fox Fantastic Four Universe 2005 to 2007 (Fantastic Four to Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer) - Delete scene implies that Fantastic Four is set in the Fox X-Men Universe Sony's Rami Spider-Man Universe 2002 to 2007 (Spider-Man 1 to Spider-Man 3) - The Daredevil and Punisher movies could be in this universe but it's not confirmed. Sony's Webb Spider-Man Universe 2012 to 2014 (Amazing Spider-Man 1 to Amazing Spider-Man 2) - Not confirmed but it's implied that the Venom and Morbius movies are apart of this universe. Marvel Cinematic Universe 2008 to Infinity (iron Man to ongoing projects) - Also includes the Netflix shows along with Agents of Shields, Cloaks and Daggers, and Runaways.

I think you should watch each Marvel film in the order of its theatrical release (and much later, you will need to include Disney+ Marvel series as part of that order) to keep track of the characters that are introduced and are recurring and to follow the overarching plot that eventually will come together--even though there will be so many different threads with each Marvel movie. Enjoy the journey.

Welcome to the MCU, Addie!!! 😊 That's good that you've already seen a couple of these movies already in the theater. Including this one. So excited for you to see the ones that you haven't seen yet, and watching your rewatches of the ones you have seen. The journey to Tom Holland's Spider-Man movies so worth it. You are in for a long, but an incredibly amazing journey. Alway remember when watching these movies: 1) They will ALL end up connecting. 2) There will ALWAYS BE a mid-credit and/or a post-credit scenes. It's very important that you watch those, because it'll set up the next movie or for what's to come. 3) 17:07 Since you recognized Stan Lee, remember to watch for his cameos in all of the movies. To me, release order is really the best way to watch these movies for the first time. Here's the rest of the Phase 1 order for you: The Incredible Hulk (2008) Iron Man 2 (2010) Thor (2011) Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) Marvel's The Avengers (2012) Next up should be the 2008 "The Incredible Hulk". Looking forward to your next reaction. 😊

Hey, Addie! Welcome to the Marvel Cinematic Universe! "Iron Man" is the kick-off to a spectacular cinematic journey that altered the industry paradigm. The MCU is a series of 20+ interrelated films culminating in a huge 2-part movie event! The movies are all based on Marvel Comics characters who were co-created beginning in 1961 by editor/writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby. Unlike other comic universes, the Marvel Universe is set in our world with many of the principals residing in New York City. What is distinctive about the Marvel pantheon is that the characters all have feet of clay; they struggle to measure up to the burden of power. Stan, Jack and artist Don Heck introduced Iron Man in 1963 in the anthology title "Tales of Suspense" expressly modeling the character on Howard Hughes and deliberately going against the anti-establishment grain of the '60's by making him a capitalist arms dealer. Insulated by wealth and ego, the epiphany he experiences and the life-threatening wound he incurs as a result of his captivity made him vulnerable and relatable to a readership predisposed to mistrusting a quintessential captain of industry. Moreover, Tony, in the comics, is also humanized by being an inveterate alcoholic which is barely alluded to in the films. The trick worked and the dichotomy hooked readers. Reframing his captors from Vietnamese Communist guerrillas in the comics to Afghan Islamicist mujahideen, the first Iron Man film adapts Tony's origin and the "Iron Monger" story arc. Iron Man was a second tier Marvel character known famously for his extravagant wealth and his endless struggle with alcoholism. Jon Favreau was an indie writer/director with one mainstream comedy hit, "Elf", under his belt. Robert Downey, Jr. was a respected former Brat Packer whose bankable days were behind him and who was then known more for drug addiction, womanizing and a motor mouth. This film should not have worked. After an aborted attempt at a shared universe with the Hulk in 2003 directed by serious auteur Ang Lee, Marvel threw the dice with Tony Stark and improbably won! It was kismet. Very rarely does an actor so ideally match a role. Downey, Jr. was BORN to play Tony Stark. His arc in the MCU is one of the best character developments I've ever seen in cinema. Remember Yinsen's last words, "Don't waste your life.", because Stark never forgets them. The cast is excellent. To support RDJ, Oscar-winner Jeff Bridges was brought aboard as Obadiah Stane setting a precedent of enlisting top-tier talent for MCU films. Gwyneth Paltrow as Virginia 'Pepper' Potts, Terrence Howard as Lt. Col. James 'Rhodey' Rhodes, Paul Bettany as disembodied JARVIS and director Jon Favreau himself as Harold 'Happy' Hogan round out the Stark stable. Shaun Toub is affecting as Stark's savior Yinsen and Faran Tahir brings gravitas as Ten Rings terrorist Raza. Unflappable Clark Gregg introduces SHIELD as Agent Phil Coulson and Samuel L. Jackson makes his first appearance as Director Nick Fury. Leslie Bibb has a bit part as ambitious journalist Christine Everhart as does Tim Guinee as USAF Major Allen. TRIVIA: 1. As a tribute to Howard Hughes, who served as a template for both Howard and Tony Stark, production was based in the former Hughes Company soundstages in Playa Vista. Tony's garage/lab is the area where Hughes assembled the H-4 Hercules airplane aka 'The Spruce Goose'. EASTER EGGS: 1. The Ten Rings terrorist organization refers to the ten alien rings worn by traditional Stark nemesis, The Mandarin, who is showcased later in the saga. 2. Raza, leader of the terror cell, is named after but bears no resemblance to a cyborg space pirate from the comics who is part of a crew of interstellar corsairs and X-Men allies known as the Starjammers. 3. Former child actor Peter Billingsley from "A Christmas Story" plays the technician chewed out by Stane who returns with a grievance against Stark Industries in "Spider-Man: Far From Home"! 4. JARVIS is an acronym for 'Just A Rather Very Intelligent System'! The namesake for Tony's operating system is the human butler who looked after him as a child and who serves the Avengers in the comics: Edwin Jarvis. Mr. Jarvis plays a significant role in the TV series "Agent Carter" portrayed by James D'Arcy. 5. If viewed chronologically, then these are the second appearances of Coulson and Fury in the saga. CAMEO: 1. Co-creator STAN LEE shows up in every Marvel movie for a Hitchcock-style CAMEO! In "Iron Man", he's the elderly gent in the smoking jacket with his arms around two nubile blondes who gets mistaken for Hugh Hefner by Tony on the red carpet! Lol. END-CREDIT SCENE: 1. Almost all Marvel movies have multiple bonus scenes during and after the credits. The "Iron Man" end-credit scene shows Nick Fury approach Tony Stark about the Avenger Initiative. The next chronological stop in the MCU is "Iron Man 2" and its companion One-Shot "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer" found on DPlus.

When he says "I am Iron Man" at the end, I can't help but think it's a nod to the Black Sabbath song "Iron Man". Contrary to what some think, that song has nothing to do with the Marvel character even though the character first appeared in 1963 and while the song was written in 1970, Sabbath, being from the UK, had never heard of the American comic character of that name. The song is a sci-fi story about a man who travels to the future and sees the apocalypse. When he travels back to his own time, wishing to warn society of what's to come, the travel causes the cells in his body to change, and his body turns to metal. He is unable to speak and is mocked for his effort in communicating. He becomes angry, bitter and finally enraged and it turns out he is the one who causes the end.

It's hard to imagine now, but before the first RDJ movie, nobody much cared about Iron Man. Not even Marvel comics fans were all that interested in the character. He was very much a second-tier character, at best. Same deal with Thor, though to a lesser extent. The first MCU movie where the title character already had cultural capital and a fan-base that might get annoyed was Captain America, and, by then, Marvel had gotten into the swing of movie-making. Smart strategy.

Welcome to the MCU! And buckle up your seat belts, that will be a wild ride. I also suggest you to watch both Hulk movies. Although they were not made by Marvel Studios, they still are part of the MCU.

Technically, I think Marvel's decided the 2nd Hulk movie is canon (the one with Edward Norton), but the 1st one isn't (the one directed by Ang Lee, with Eric Bana). I still enjoyed the first one, though, and think it's worth checking out, especially as it sets-up the second movie.

I will never stop hating the Jericho missile demonstration scene. They didn’t consider the effects of the sonic boom when they made that scene. We can hear the missile hitting the ground AS THEY ARE hitting the ground even though that’s not how sound displacement works.

The ending scene with Nick Fury was rewritten. He was supposed to mention Tobey's Spiderman here because Tobey was supposed to be The Spiderman, but Sony wanted to dick around. Many scripts were rewritten in general since they had to delete his cameos in some movies prior to the Avengers, and generally any relations (such as Oscorp) were removed from the films.

I am here early enough to say this: You need to watch Agents of SHIELD (the TV show) as well. It starts in the timeline after "The Avengers." Other people may tell you not to watch it, but I promise that if you watch it, it will be worth it. It is connected to many MCU films and it will give you a much more interesting view of the MCU. At least watch until the end of the first season. Edit: I know this comment probably will get lost, but on the chance that you do see this comment, ake a chance with Agents of SHIELD, and watch the first episode. I guarantee that you won't regret it. I know that not a lot of people talk about it like the movies, but it's something great and something that you should react to.

jeeze good luck on this whole MCU thing. It's A LOT... which is actually an understatement. plenty of content though I guess! let's see if/when you get sick of them as many have lol it'll be interesting to see which movies/heroes are your favorites (villains too) and what stuff you end up wanting to skip on your way through since there's just way too much

I have a good laugh at that scene where Tony pulls the tube out of his nose. It always gets to reactors but I did the same thing when I woke up from a coma after a car accident many years ago. I was completely dazed, no idea where I was, and pulled two tubes out. They must have been a foot long or more. The nurses freaked but they didn't reinsert them (thankfully). Never thought about how gross it was until I watched my first reaction of that scene.

Congratulations Addie! You have taken your first step into a larger world! Sadly some of the MCU films do fall victim to time crunches and studio interference, shoehorning in characters. But overall, you will not be disappointed. And while not cannon for the MCU, bonus points if you watch the old 1977 Incredible Hulk TV pilot as that is the series that made the Hulk a household name.
