Highly impressive head. This video is a great example of why gel and other solid media penetration tests don't reflect penetration on animals. As much as I love Sevr's, there is no way they will out penetrate an Iron Will wide on an animal even though they beat it in Lusk's test. (Various model Sever's out penetrated the IW on cardboard and gel)
@LuskArcheryAdventures7 ай бұрын
Well, I agree in part. No homogenous test mediums can accurately replicate an animal, because animals have various mediums within them as well. This head has a fairly wide cut, with much greater surface area, and also thicker blades. That's creating greater friction and resisting penetration. In dryer mediums, like bone and hide and some tougher tissue, penetration will also be reduced by that friction. And a larger bevel like in the Sevr, often opens up a channel for the arrow shaft to pass thru more readily, compared to two blade predominant heads. But in more liquid based mediums, like bloody tissue, penetration will not be so hindered by those factors and heads like this may penetrate more effectively. It's a mixed bag.

I still have and use that old wood laminate bow now I'm in mid 40s to take birds and small game with flu flu arrows and small game blunts... oh and my 70# compound shooting 685 grain arrow set up is awesome for taking ANY game in North America with confidence

Excellent as usual john. Im not a fan of bleeders whatsoever. To ME, the entire point and purpose of SBs is maximum penetration and bleeders will hinder that
@LuskArcheryAdventures7 ай бұрын
In my testing, both single bevel and double bevels penetrate the same. That's when I have the exact same heads with the same dimensions and tested under the same conditions with the same mediums. But single bevels can create a bit better entrance hole and breach bone a bit better, allowing the shaft to penetrate more deeply thereafter. A case can be made that double bevels penetrate better cause no forward energy is lost on rotation. I like bleeders, cause I've shot animals with 2 blades and just had a very small slit and thus little bloodletting.

The draw length and arrow weight make significant differences in the momentum she's generating. Assuming they're relatively light, she's do well with something like an Exodus, Magnus Stinger 2 blade, Kayuga Trizot, Iron Will without bleeders...just to name a few.

Those are great heads. On my last moose hunt, I had both Sevr 1.5s and Iron Will Single Bevels in my quiver. The Sevrs were for long shots, long follow up shots, windy shots or broadside shots. The Iron Wills were for quartering or frontal shots. With elk, I like that same flexibility, as most situations fit into those two broadhead's strengths. I've also loved Exodus for elk...fly great, penetrate very well, larger cut, and super tough.

Haha. Sometimes it is that way, cause wobble often comes from blades not seating properly. Usually, if I tighten them on, then take them off, then tighten them on.....many times, they spin true. After concrete, some are "well seated" :) But I thought these spun well before & after. But when I comment, I'm looking at the broadhead in front of me. The videos are much closer up and much larger, so things sometimes look different thru that magnification.

Shooting an Iron Will at an animal that is dead level or downhill is the hardest thing in the world to do. Why???? Because you will more than likely get a pass through. You have a very high chance of not finding that arrow. I lost one last year to a cow elk on a down hill shot. Complete pass through...elk tipped over at 28yds from shot. perfect....however I couldn't find my arrow. So.....That could be hundreds of dollars lost. As if you find them...they just need a bit of touch up with the KME and like new. These things will last forever as long as you don't lose it. Love my Iron Wills.

You should add sound of a broadhead in flight to your testing. You could just put a microphone of some sort halfway between you and the target and then you could play the video of the broadhead flying by the microphone it would make for good KZbin video as well as good data.
@LuskArcheryAdventures7 ай бұрын
Thank you. I've considered that, and wish I could do it. The challenge is, I need a distance far enough for the sound of the shot and the sound of the impact to not be louder than the sound of the arrow whizzing by. 40 yards works for that. BUT I also need an indoor place where ambient noise is consistent month to month...there is way too much variation outdoors, at least where I am. And I can't drive an hour to the nearest indoor 40 yard range every time.
@MrChiumiento7 ай бұрын
@@LuskArcheryAdventures I get that. I saw a guy do it outdoors but he didn’t at night when it is much quieter and it worked quite well. Have you thought about using a Lab Radar to get the statistics on how different heads may affect different statistics?

@LuskArcheryAdventures7 ай бұрын
That is a really good broadhead. There will be a lot of animals taken with it.
@ThirdLawPair7 ай бұрын
I'm curious why you shoot the broadheads into concrete. Any metal that can withstand that will have properties that make it suboptimal for cutting through tissue and bone.
@LuskArcheryAdventures7 ай бұрын
Well, honestly, that is just not true. If you look at the incredible sharpness of this iron will, for example. And you see the A2 tool steel it’s made out of. And it did very well with the concrete. Why would you say that is sub optimal? The type of steel that’s used in a broadhead is only one factor affecting durability. The way it is hardened alsoaffects it. And the geometric design also affects the structural integrity tremendously. So the concrete test is a good test to see if and how a Broadhead may fail on a very hard impact. If it can handle that, just imagine how well it could handle an animal. That being said, the concrete test only accounts for 3% of the total score. I certainly don’t consider it a pass fail test for a Broadhead. But if I have to choose one, Broadhead that can handle a shot into cinderblock, and one that cannot. All other things equal, I know which one I’ll choose for my hard earned shot on an animal.
@MatthewC1377 ай бұрын
@@LuskArcheryAdventures Well said. It seems to me toughness and hardness would be serious factors when hitting strong bones.
@ThirdLawPair7 ай бұрын
@@LuskArcheryAdventures This is due to the tradeoffs present in the metallurgy and geometry. A very novice approach to think of blade design is that if it can withstand an extreme test then it should excel at its intended use. A good book worth reading is "Knife Engineering" by Dr. Larrin Thommas. For the metallurgy component, there is a tradeoff between hardness, toughness, and corrosion resistance. Even when you have a nice mid-grade steel like A2, the heat treating processes can either maximize hardness or toughness, not both. If you increase the toughness to go beyond the intended use of the blade, it will have lower hardness. The same is true if you did an extreme test for corrosion resistance. If you were to soak it in vinegar for a month and expect no spots of rust, you would need an extremely high-alloy steel with very poor edge retention qualities. Likewise with the geometry. To survive the concrete test, it needs a very wide primary grind and working edge. Edge geometry has an even bigger effect on blade performance than the metallurgy does. That is why blades are designed with a grind angle to match the exact task it will be used for. When blades are designed to pass a test rather than designed to perform the intended task, they perform more poorly as a result.
@ThirdLawPair7 ай бұрын
@@MatthewC137 There is a tradeoff between hardness and toughness. It is toughness that allows the blade to withstand impacts. Remember, though, that animal bones do nowhere near as much damage to a blade as concrete will. A harder metal with a finer grind angle will penetrate better through tissue and bone, but will crack when fired into concrete.
@MatthewC1377 ай бұрын
