I welded and cut and bent both ways so many of these I get sick just watching you set this up. I had a box full of these test plates made up and had to weld them in every position. Predominately with 7018 but also 6010. I still have burn scares, laughing. Brought back old memories. Thank you

Anele. When practicing in your welding bay don't always have the practice peices on your bench. Weld some underneath the bench above the bench switching hands. Awkward positions. You'll thank me one day 🌚 oh and loosen your grip on the electrode holder.

@@joebly5641 you're right it isn't an art it is a trade and in a trade there is this thing called VISUAL INSPECTION If a weld is shit then it looks like shit aslong as your looking for the right thing unless you're working on playgrounds or hand rails for the middle of nowhere or welds that don't really matter and are just there to stick some random shit together for a quick gig then you would be correct...but for this shit it's quite important I would fail this plate just because of the sheer amount of undercut plus the hollows I saw on the arc shot Something I have to check off on a sheet everyday at work is uniform weld profile uniform length and width of weld bead.

@@joebly5641Are you a welder? If not, then shut the hell up🙄😂there is such a thing as visual inspection. 99% of the time, if that weld looks like shit, it probably is shit. Compare 1:30 to 2:49 and you will see there was something changed about the video sequence. At 2:49, the wing added to the right side doesn't have a hand grinder groove cut in it. You can tell at the very end of the first pass, the root, he was panicking because it was getting hot and about to blow out. I think there was multiple attempts at this root pass on different plates. Unless someone dictated such a large gap for the spacing on the root, I don't see the point. Cut landings on the plate edges and use less gap for spacing. A few extra amps and push the rod forward instead of dragging the root and you could easily watch it cut through without so much flipping back and forth and pushing so much puddle through the backside of the plate. Maybe the plates were prepared for him and that's what he had to use along with the required spacing? Who knows? No explanation given before video. It could be done easier as far as the root pass went. None the less, informative video.

Your comment made me laugh. My first thought was why an 1/8 gap with no land on the bevel? You are just asking for an unwieldy size keyhole 😅. I'm with you, tighten the gap, grind that knife edge of a bevel a nice land and kick up the amps and punch through. Should be easier to maintain the keyhole and get all the way across with a single electrode.

Material definitely changed. What he started with isn't the same as what he finished with. Guessing he blew the shit out of the first one with such a huge gap with no land and started over. Why suggest pushing the rod instead of dragging? Risk of slag inclusions...

Nice job for a learner. Try half the gap with a 7016. Don't flick back and forth your chucking metal away. Keep the arc short and watch for the arc flame just licking through. If it gets too hot slow up and shorten the arc to cool it down or vice versa . This applies to all positions and trains the eye to watch the pool. First ten thousand bots are the hardest.

The whole point of welding is to melt both metals equally and to drag the rod if it is horizontal position, if you weld verticals than some rods like 6013 are perfect for vertical up, but do not try vertical down with that electrode, if you weld with 7018 than your arc needs to be very short, I mean you need to melt both pieces with same rhythm and move electrode, after some time you will get experience to make it routine.

I would not do circular motion for the root. Just a drag with a short arc length. As long as there is weld protrusion at the rear. To me there was too much protrusion after the first pass. Good idea about tacking blocks on the ends to maintain the gap while welding across the width.

I agree on the undercut. As a Boilermaker "certified, high-pressure welder, I noted several items. On the backside (root pass) the slag would seem to indicate some "push through". The weld tests, I've taken, would permit the use of a wire wheel on a grinder, but never a grinding wheel. That was grounds for fail. My certification tests were on schedule 40 tube with a test strip taken at 1:30, 4:30, 7:30, & 10:30. There would be a face bend, root bend then the ultimate two were given side bends. In over two decades I've never failed the cert test or on the job, had one of my welds fail ultrasound, magnaflux, x-ray. I never held the rod, to steady it, my idle arm was used to brace the arm with the rod holder.

The gap is wider than I prefer, but to each their own. There was a lot of porosity in your root pass, but I didn't notice it nearly as much in the fill or cap. All in all, I think it would pass a bend test. 👍
@volatile100
@volatile100 2 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't even pass visual inspection. There's so much undercut on the last cap pass, which he wouldn't even need to do if he didn't grind the hell out of it, which would also fail you at most places, since they typically only let you grind the root to feather, and the rest will be wire wheel only. The probable porosity and slag inclusion from pure chipping and not any brushing could potentially crack it during a test. That's assuming that they even let you go to bend it. But given that no country with safety standards uses Arabic even as a third language, it would probably be fine even if it did crack.

Lovely Root weld! well done, but please never clean slag off with cutting disk ! just chip it off with chipping hammer, bad practice really, regards.

First of all he did not clean off the mill scale which would cause porosity also didn’t clean off slag after his root and proceeded to fill it in 😮 Cleaner metal equals better bond and prevents cracking

Very nice finished weld. Why no backing for the root pass? Although I never used it, they make a tape you can use for this. The root gap also seemed a bit excessive but I am not certain. I design heavy steel structures and refer to AWS D1.1 for preapproved welds for guidance. Anyhow, nice looking weld.

Why aren't you using E6010 5P? Thay gap is way too big for that rod size.

The world look good but there's one thing I know that heats up too high something's off because on a pretty Chevy 18 weld your flux should curl up behind and come off by itself as your welding
