These videos are great. I wish I'd seen them sooner as I messed my shoulders up from years of doing heavy shoulder presses. Will stick with lateral raises and tricep exercises that don't stress the shoulder joint from now on.

I wish I'd seen this 6 months ago. I am rehabilitating from right shoulder injury. Your right it has greatly effected my gains. Once you have shoulder injury it takes a while for it to fully repair. Thanks for your video, clearly explaining the damage that happens to the shoulders when shoulder pressing. Maybe when you are younger you can get away. When you get late 40's you pay. I know.

@aldocipriotti67527 жыл бұрын
Leg extensions are fantastic if performed correctly. . The whole shearing of the joints is overrated IMO. As long as the pad is low on the ankles and not high up, minimal shearing. For quad development, hard to beat properly executed extensions as the range of motion and length of joint travel is tremendous. The biomechanics of the movement are great. If you had the pad way to high the on the lower legs , you will get more of a horz force against the knee joint, then I would agree with the potential that the exercise can compromise that area. Good channel.

a side lateral but lying on your side on the ground or a flat bench, where your arm points up at the end of the rep has a better strength curve than standing laterals.

Great stuff Ron, as usual. I cringe everytime I see peeps do behind the neck shoulder presses or lat pulls.. As for me, I typically do seated barbell, front only, chest up, bar down to chin only - and I know that pushes the danger zone as well!! Another facet on shoulder press that I think is bad, is bringing those elbows to far down below the shoulder joint, essentially bringing weight entirely down to the chest... I also prefer dumbell lateral raises, but the key, as you mentioned is weight. It doesn't take much to pump those shoulders and it's critical to keep elbows below shoulders...too much weight causes bad form and hurt shoulders. Appreciate you Ron!
@BrooklynMoor8 жыл бұрын
Ok Ok let me start by saying that the video was informative well done because it is true that military presses and this is very important the Barbell at heavy weight behind your head done w/poor form is taxing on a Ball and Socket joint that is really just connected to scapula by the Rotator cuff which as you so well pointed out is delicate and can tear over time and with all that pressing benching heavy pulling and behind the head tricep extentions are rough on Rotater cuffs. Behind the head Lat pull downs can be a problem on shoulders as well as Upright rows with narrow grip brought up to the chin will put that shoulder in vulnerable position. I do Military press w/ Barbell and dumbell. I must follow strict form when doing standing Militarys with that a weightbelt should be worn because its more stressfull on back to me than the shoulders i do them once week or every other week alt barbell and dumbell. Over press with dumbell is a more natural movement especially with the supinated grip . I prefer standing on all my Presses but sitting for heavy weight is better on those vertebraes. Pressing when done correct gives me that table top shoulder look combining with the lateral raise which can be a bit of a test on internal strength are great 4 me. I agree lateral raise with dumbell heavy and moderated are the best why cuz it can be seen through the Tank Tops first. I would say upright rows wide grip to the low pecs done right may be better than a press.Oh and chess flys are just as worse on the shoulders especially if they are done 2 wide and to far back in stretch serious hampering rotater cuff and pec tendons.

Its too bad we cant just tie the weight straight onto the elbow and leave the forearm and hand out of the equation. I know what you mean Ron. All the way up to my mid 30s I had been doing the horrid Behind the neck Press with a barbell. All of the sudden my shoulders starting hurting bad. I had to almost completely stop training them. Then I started to doing them to the front and walla the issue stopped. Now when I do my presses I consciously dont lock out at the top leaving a slight bend in my elbows and I only take the bar down to about chin level. At first I felt like I was half **sing it but I knew in my heart being in early 50s I needed to do something. I was going really heavy on side laters but now I think I am actually going back to more of a high angle rear delt movement with a lighter dumbell. I truly do try to analyse things. I can tell in my early 50s sometimes my ego gets ahead of me but I can also tell me analytic side of thinking is starting to tame that beast. Its hard mentally for a guy that was always pretty large to become more of a thinking mans bodybuilder. I enjoy your channel allot it makes me think. Keep up the good work.

Praise the Lord Cesar, Sometimes the machines do not accommodate the different body types -- your arms may be long or short, the seat might not be suited for your structure, and the pivoting point on the machine may be off for your shoulder width. Exercise equipment is normally designed to fit the average person and not the entire population -- they do their best. There are some pieces of equipment that I can't use either. An alternative would be to use the dumbbells, so you can adapt them to your body. If it still causes pain or is extremely uncomfortable there may be some structural problems in the shoulder itself. I hope this helps Cesar -- God bless you. No matter what don't quit. Ron Williams

Hi Ron, I have arthritis in my right shoulder. In fact, I have it several places got it in my teens, but it never bothered me until the last couple of years. Now you can actually see that the viscous fluid in between the ball and socket of the shoulder is worn out. When I do a simple barbell curl, it appears my right shoulder is slightly uneven and looks like it's dipping down. It is, but down and in because everything is worn away. I was shown in an X-ray that it's basically bone on bone. They told me that I'll likely have to get it replaced. I asked when will I have to do that, they said when the pain becomes too great. Well, it's getting worse and I've started to lift the way you suggest and it's helping, but I've started noticing that I'm starting to lose strength. I notice is especially with lateral raises. I'd say there's about a 5-pound difference in strength. My question is can prescription drugs make it worse. Unfortunately, I have to take Subutex and Xanax for Bi-Polar and Panic Disorder. I've stopped before but had to go back, not because I couldn't get through withdrawal, I went 3 months off them. My disorders just got worse and I wasn't craving them. I hate these medications. Nothing else works. Anyway, what can I do to slow the deterioration of the bone, or how can I keep from getting that shoulder replacement, or can I? Lastly, if I get shoulder replacement, how long will it take to heal and how long until I get my strength back and will I be able to lift as much as I did prior to the slow injury? TL;DR: I have arthritis in my right shoulder pretty bad. Will eventually have to get it replaced. I believe the meds I'm taking Subutex and Xanax makes it worse, or at least the pain worse, but I can't stop them. What can I do to slow down deterioration and if I have to get shoulder replacement, how long will it take to heal and how long will it take to get my muscle back. Finally, will I be able to lift like I used to with the synthetic joint? Thanks, Ron!

Praise the Lord Sithtiger, I am certain that you are dealing with inflammation throughout your body. A couple of things that will help that is making sure you have plenty of good water and an anti-inflammatory nutrition plan. I am sorry to hear about the arthritis that you are dealing with; I am sure that it is painful, but hopefully you will learn some things through this process and pass it on to others who are dealing with the same issue. Concerning the medications, because I am not a doctor I want to be very careful responding to the medical portion, but I do know that there are medications that increase inflammation in the body. By the way, wheat germ oil will also help lubricate the joints and aid in decreasing some of the inflammation. God bless you in your endeavors and hang in there, Ron Willliams

what i dont get is if the scapular rotates upward along with the shoulder press as it should be how does the socket and acromium cause impingement from overhead pressing or force it out of the socket now if your shoulder blade doesnt rotate upward along with your arm bone and head in the socket, it will definitely hit the roof of the shoulder joint but then is it not a problem with your shoulder blade roatation and not the actual excercise

Ron, mind giving me your opinion on one thing? I have heard that when you pull your scapula back, activating your lower lats and bringing your mid back together, you clear the risk of scraping the shoulder joint I believe. Maybe this is different than the issue you're addressing, I can vouch that they feel good since I involved those actions before doing the press.

The shoulder press should be conducted in the saggital plane and not in the frontal. I personally don't over head press due to mobility and back issue's. At least not overhead on a 90° bench. I'll use a 70° angle and supplement with front raises. But for the most part, I stay away from them. And one should also take into consideration the acromion process. Some are more flat, curved and hooked. So from a purely biomechanical standpoint, some people are genetically more prone to shoulder impingement simply due to their unique anatomical makeup. And of course posture is also an issue. If one is a little on the kyphotic side, than shoulder pressing will be a nightmare.
