This surely takes me back! I actually bought a new 1967 Mustang convertible late in 1966. Ordered it with 390, 4 speed, 3.25 locker (which was 9") disk brakes, and power top. Thought it too tame, then a buddy and I thrashed on it for a long weekend, and installed a new 427 long block, which came with a solid lifter cam, lifters, adjustable rockers, push rods, and heads. I don't remember what the compression ratio was, but it liked Sunoco 260. Only hold up came when we went to put the valve covers from the 390 on, and found they wouldn't fit over the adjustable rockers. Had to make a quick trip into town for the right ones, which they actually had on the shelf, in chrome no less! Everything fit, even the exhaust manifolds, and yes, the last couple of plugs on the left were a pain to change. I bought a plug socket with a universal made on it, and used it with a long extension. The end result was a bit of a handful to drive around town with no power steering and sticky Firestone Wide Ovals! I think they were H70-14s. The trans was a 10 bolt top loader Ford, and the clutch was a Long type, and I think it was 12". I sold the car to a co-worker late in 1968. I heard later that he had topped a hill a might too quickly, and didn't have air brakes. RIP John.

Why all the negative comments . I thought it was cool to save a peice of heritage. I once sold a complete 429 scj engine an trans. With a set of bare low mile scj heads to a ford collector. The engine had been maintained. Good codition . Tried to keep someone elses dream alive too. Heck ,they dont even make that stuff no more thats why it has to go to a collector . Thanks for sharring, guy. I live in detroit michigan

Just found your channel. I'm just over the hill from you. Brownsville pa. I'm not sure if any of them can be bought. But a Guy in ohiopyle that worked on the railroad has in a garage. All original 1969 GTO judge a 1970 GTO a1957 Chevrolet and a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle convertible with a 396 Muncie four speed and 410 possie. These car's have been sitting in there for over 40 years. The owner died about four years ago and his son inherited them and will never do anything with them. Not enough ambition. I sure would like to see someone save them.

I had no idea you have to use a four foot long crowbar to remove the distributor cap on a 427. I think I must have skipped that page in the ford service manual. Lmao
@Ironcitygarage
@Ironcitygarage Жыл бұрын
Does the repair manual have a magical way to make rust disappear? You skipped the part about the motor being exposed to western pa with no hood for 10 years, the distributor was essentially welded to the block inside with rust. So ya, leverage was key in trying to save it. Would love to hear what the KZbin mechanic would’ve done though, enlighten us

Monster channel locks and a crow bar to pull the distributor. I hope the factory date codes are still ok from the channel locks and more crow bar while pulling the engine, dents in the shock towers.. This is not an old 1940 Bakery truck. I like your show but how about some penetrating fluid over a few days to ease the crow bar dents in the aluminum manifold, and more. Yes you need to make that cash but a 427 Stang don't come around much. Yes I do like your channel.

It was hard to see when the motor was out I thought all 427 had crossbolt main caps.
@neil6212
@neil6212 Жыл бұрын
They did, except possibly service blocks. The spacers between the side of the main caps were critical, and could be adjusted with shims.

I found a 427 in a 63 galaxy that was not cross bolted. Also did not have 352 on drivers block face. But as the other guy pointed out it may have been a service replacement motor.

Somebody went to all the trouble & expense of dropping a 427 into their Mustang, but they left the automatic transmission in there? What a shame and waste of time! I hope you guys don’t repeat that mistake. I’m in the process of doing the same thing, but with a ‘66 Fairlane. Younz got a shifter for a T-10 laying around? That looked like a very desirable car when it was new the deluxe interior was an option that was not seen on many Mustang GT cars, Most GT had the regular black dash inserts instead of the Aluminum! the roof and floor Counsils were also desirable. I owned a 1968 fastback back in the late 1960's wish i still had that car, the old trade it every 3 years thing replaced mine with a newer car.
