That is a really good idea. Not only can you soak the mat. You can seperate them and use them side by side if a particular project needs it. Thanks for the idea.

Thank you for this video. I have one of these boards, got it used like you did. It was in quite good condition when I was acquired it, but now it has a brown scorch mark from an iron that overheated. I have just kept on using it and never thought of recovering it. Recovering it is such q great idea! Thanks for the inspiration.

Recovering that board is a great idea. I hadn’t heard of soaking your mat before so that was interesting, although I was disappointed that you didn’t show your process of removing the board and the layers of the mat under the fabric.
@threadedsewing10 ай бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. There really was only the padding under the top fabric, which I reused on the board that was in the video. But you are right.

My husband purchased this same board for me years ago. I found the fabric side slipped when I tried to use the cutting portion. Having the velcro on the back gives the option of removing the iron pad when you want to cut something. You could even insert no-slip pads on the back of the cutting surface if you find the fabric side slips when you try to cut OR use a pad of no slip material under the fabric when you are cutting.

These are great suggestions. Thanks.

I wonder about the slight raise to the cutting mat due to the thickness of the 2 straps of hook & loop tape. Did the mat "dip" either hand, Fabric & rotary cutter being pressed to the wrong side of the ironing board? If yes, suggesting a layer (of batting, Flannel or even just some more cotton fabric to raise the nidflr and insides of the board to the same height where the ironing board meets the back of the mat...
@threadedsewing9 ай бұрын
I found the difference of the Velcro wasn’t enough to make it dip because of the padding on the ironing side. It absorbed the difference.

I recover my boards with lightweight canvas or duck. It stretches less under use, gives a flatter firmer ironing surface, and is very durable compared to quilting cotton.

Another idea you could zig zag or serger the edges of your fabric to help with fabric fraying.

I have a board Iike this and have used it a lot. However, I wouldn’t buy one new again, because lately when I use it to iron my cotton fabrics the plastic warps. It does go back to its shape after it cools and dries out, but the warping is annoying while I’m trying to work with it. If you just want to hit quilt pieces with a dry iron, it is probably just fine. I have used mine mostly while I make handbags and I need to steam and set seams, etc.
@threadedsewing10 ай бұрын
Wow. That would be annoying! It’s true I use very little steam because I mostly do smaller pieces. Thanks for the feedback.

@threadedsewing10 ай бұрын

@carolynmckee429510 ай бұрын
I think what she’s asking has to do with the padding. The only place mentioned is at the end when you recommended using heat resistant padding. I’m guessing you cut it exactly the size of the board (and didn’t wrap the padding over the edges of the board?) I went back to see if I missed it too😊.
@threadedsewing9 ай бұрын

@sevenandthelittlestmew10 ай бұрын
Well, it looks like you answered my question at the end! 😂 If you have a link to an online source, that’d be super. Our Joann is one of the Chapter 11 closures, and I’m not sure if Michael’s would carry it.
@threadedsewing10 ай бұрын
Here’s a quick tip…you can probably just go to your local dollar store and snag an ironing cover and use that for your insides. If it doesn’t have enough padding, get 1/2” foam from Michael’s to go underneath the dollarstore ironing cover and just get a cute piece of material to go over top of that! They also sell ironing padding on Amazon as well. Hope that helps.

The two things I wanted to know, you just glossed over. How did you separate the ironing surface from the cutting board in the first place? And you never showed what was underneath the top cover. Did you need to fit new padding?

Velcro is a OK idea.. but now you have a gap when you cut and your matt will Crack.
@threadedsewing10 ай бұрын
It’s not significant enough to notice. I think because I always have the padding of the ironing side to make up for it. And the cutting mat is surprisingly stiff and thick compared to self healing roll up mats.

I’ve found that the cutting mat was horrible to use. It didn’t seem resealable. I like the ironing side but I’ll never use the cutting mat again.
@threadedsewing10 ай бұрын
Yes. You are right. It’s not a self healing mat. After doing this project I thought about making a different one with a self healing mat. I feel like it would be better for my cutters too. But this one is such a great size for travel and it was second hand…cheap!
