Hi, great question. The Nomad ABS plastic shell is not structurally sound to the point of accepting a roof rack. For that, you would want to consider the Swift tent which comes with crossbars and T-slots for mounting accessories.

What kind of mods are used on the subaru outback rack to make that roof top tent work?

It clamps around the factory cross bars, no mods needed for the Nomad tent. Other tents may exceed the rack dynamic load rating and will require an after market rack to support the weight.

Is it possible to mount this tent so that it opens to the driver side? The awning I purchased is for the passenger side.

What are the 4 small bungees with hooks for?

Those help to secure the rain fly so rain and snow can appropriately slough off. There are pre-drilled holes on the underside of the tent mount frame where the bungees intuitively hook in :)

Can I roast marshmallows on the window rods?

Absolutely! We just recommend taking the rods off of the tent first before roasting.

Mine never closes all the way. Never closed all the way since I got it. Even if I tighten the straps pretty tight. The closing side is about 2 inches higher than supposed to be.

The ladder should be collapsed from the top down. This way the larger diameter tubes toward the bottom are exposed and the smaller top ladder posts are collapsed to make the ladder stronger. Also, a good thing to look for is the rungs of the ladder need to be flat. This is a useful gauge to tell you the ladder is at the optimal angle. Love all my Ironman4x4 gear!

Unfortunately it comes with a 30mm mattress which is extremely uncomfortable and you cant add a topper as it won't shut.
