It *is* a re-imagining of Sherlock Holmes, but instead of solving crimes because of the subtlest of clues he solves medical mysteries. So *yes* he figures out each mystery by the end of at most 2 episodes. It's literally the premise of the show.

@macdaddy1376 he's literally wrong all the time on the show. Only if you watch clips do you think he's never wrong off the top of my head he once had to tell a patient like 2 different illness he had one after another cause they cause the first one was wrong and wanted him to stay in the hospital to find the actual cause( episode ends when they finally have the diagnosis and finally tell him it and it's terminal no cure and can only prolong his life)

So, just to point out but the house writers used to encourage doctors to write in with the stupidest/craziest stuff patients brought in to them for the clinic hours. So most of the clinic stuff he does is 'based on a true story' though obviously the doctor's writing in could have made it up they were going on what they gave. I'm sure if they were doing the show today they would just skim medical reddit, as it basically ended up doing the same thing. Also, in response to Dr. Mike saying this wouldn't happen, I'm happy to remind everyone that if you ever see a warning about how not to use something on a bottle? Its because someone was in fact stupid enough to try using it that way. Likewise, there's a reason why there's pictograms on some medicine now. Yes, there are people that stupid in the world.

Also, having spent 13 years working in healthcare, quite a lot of what House says to patients is what Doctors and Nurses sometimes WANT to say to some patients but can’t! So him being really fucking harsh is completely unacceptable, but it might very well cross a Doctor or a Nurses mind

One thing I'll say about the Elder Care segment: the primary function of a lot of those places is social. It's getting people in similar age brackets together so they can socialize, so they're not stuck with much younger relatives who don't have enough time for them, being lonely and inactive. Socialization can often be the best medicine.

Especially since new guidelines for mental health/activity care are dropping all the time. Activities teams used to be one overworked lady running bingo twice a week. My facility can have between 6 and 8 organised programs happening per day- not including residents spending time with family or choosing from a list of on-demand materials. There are even care staff where 50 percent of their official job is to hang out with residents one-on-one. You can't get that support from a single family member trying to keep their own life together.

When the writers for Scrubs were looking for inspiration for their first few seasons, they went around the country to various hospitals to get stories from the staff there to see what they could fit into the show. Given this was meant to be humorous, they came back with a disproportionate amount of stories of people coming into the ER with stuff shoved up their ass. They used that for one episode, lmao.

As someone who works in a care facility I absolutely get where Mouse is coming from in regards to putting a loved one in there. Honestly if you can have in home care thats the best option, but if you need to then absolutely shop around and dont just send them to a state nursing home as those tend to have the most residents and sometimes not enough staff which is where the horror stories of neglect come from. Also legit these "patients" are doing shit i would be worried about my 90 year old dementia patients doing, not functioning adults with jobs that have health benefits.

Absolutely: I haven't done it, but my Mom went overseas to help take care of my Grandfather (he had moved back to their home country, the Philippines) when his colon cancer got really bad. She talked a lot about having to feed him, wipe his ass after he used the toilet, bathe him, etc. And she had the luxury of being able to take the time off work to do that. Most people with jobs or their own family, or just their own lives are not equipped for that work.

@@nightingale8178 It'll be a while before I can know what I will do; all I know now is that to me, I wouldn't want my aging to overly burden my theoretical children, or prevent them from living their lives. Children don't choose to get brought into this world, or who will bring them in, and I don't think providing for and raising a child should be viewed as a "favor" to be repaid. That's the responsibility of the parent who decided to have a child; to use it as a justification to place a significant burden upon our offspring reeks of manipulation to me. Now if I have children, and they did want to help me that way, beautiful. But I wouldn't want to force that as an expectation. That's ignoring the fact it's ultimately their choice at the end of the day. And this whole discussion also ignores the fact the many children who faced abuse from their parents, and have every right to cut them out of their lives. Or the simple fact that many regular people are not prepared with the skills or time to properly take care of elderly, especially those with physical or mental health conditions.
@saorise28
@saorise28 Ай бұрын
@@nightingale8178yes the tit for tat works, for as long as we can feasibly do it for. There is a HUGE difference between caring for a child and an elder. I helped care for my grandma but we literally just didn’t have the time(with jobs, travel time, family) to support her and she now loves the care she gets and she gets to socialize! Hell she has a boyfriend now; and that’s the same woman that I’ve never known to even be interested in anyone my entire life.

To be fair to the writers of medical drama shows... you have to compress stuff, you have to make things more or less dire for drama. Nobody is going to watch a show for two months just waiting to see if the T4 (terminal) cancer patient is dead yet. Every episode is like 2 years of medical process compressed into like a day. What makes House infuriating is simply "House" himself having the bedside manner on extreme end of the ND scale (where they don't see people as humans in deserve of empathy, but as objects that can be replaced, if someone's case isn't interesting, they are undeserving of his time.)

It's really hard sometimes to be in so much pain, and interact with people. Especially when you feel like they're all dumb. It can really make a person short tempered, frustrated. In all honesty he should be retired, but through out the show he keeps getting dragged back. Yes, it's a drama, but you really have to imagine his view point. I've been there, and it's hard. Being out, on my cane, my pain meds not working enough, having to listen to someone rambling nonsense... It's hard not to be short, and rude at times. My friends know, and can see when I'm in pain and have me at least sit. They also find my sarcasm and jokes hilarious when I snap. Though I often apologize after...

With the asthmatic one I cringed so hard after finally getting somewhat "diagnosed" with it just before covid hit (unfortunately I also got covid around the same time, about a month and 12 days later, but couldn't test at the time due to age restrictions on testing, was stupid imo but we're almost certain I had it) But yeah, anyways, back to the topic, so much cringe with the wrong use of the inhaler "not like that!!"

I disagree, this „people are full of bullshit, and i am not having it“ attitude of dr. House was what made this show great. I loved it.

Not sure what I loved more, Scrubs or House. They don't make good shows like that anymore sadly.

200$ for an inhalor? I live in morocco (yeah, i know the minimum wage here is only around 300 a month), and those cost the equivalent of 4 usd, so they're definitely not expensive to make. I did a google search, and it says you can get them in the us for like 68 usd, which is still expensive, but at least its not 200

6:48 i fucking hate how people in the chat are just like ''nah, he was right tho, she was sleeping around'' but what if she WASN'T? it's never right to just assume someone is lying, ESPECIALLY when you're a doctor, and i know it's a show and it's how dr. house is but... that's just not the type of shit you should put out there, because he very clearly ISN'T right- like sure, maybe she was sleeping around but that doesn't mean he was right to act like that and assume that

I've dated in the medical community a few times. There are some crazy stories. The one that comes to mind was a woman who thought that her husband was cheating because SHE got pregnant and they always used a condom. So he must be having sex without a condom with someone else. Turns out they were reusing condoms, putting them on one way, then the other (inside out) and then wasing them when they were done.

I've met patient that use condom in his thumb, not for it purposed use (bcs the healthworker explained and described it LITERALLY that way), and the wife complained that she's pregnant, well ofc 😭 Not everyone educated enough about it, so it's our task to educating other people tho 👍

I would like to remind everyone that the Average IQ is 100. Meaning half of people are above, and the other half below. And a quick Google Search, in America 5.5% have an IQ of 75 or below. So of what should be 18.5 million Americans in this range... Yeah, with a pool that big I can see a chunk making some very stupid decisions.

He knows mandarin, because of course he does. And also the lack of tact is because they wrote him to be vaguely on the spectrum, and especially during this time, they just meant you have no empathy. WHICH ISNT A GOOD THING, I JUST WANT TO MAKE IT CLEAR THAT WRITING PEOPLE LIKE THAT ISNT GOOD

How funny would it be if it turned out the only reason House went on as long as it did is because medical professionals and longterm patients love roasting it and the majority of it's views came from hate watching! 😂

Why is it so strange to know House, who regularly reads medical journals in foreign languages, can speak a foreign language? He's a genius so it shouldn't be a stretch for him to know multiple languages.
