A lot of noise coming from the bottom of the garden led me to witness a Magpie flying off leaving 2 Jays in distress. This short video shows a sample of their behaviour which lasted 40 mins after the Magpie's departure. What had occurred or why they seemed intent on removing all the thorns from the Sloe Bush wasn't clear. Any ideas?

I saw one at the Barnes Wildfowl Reserve near Hammersmith, very tame just stood perched on a fence in front of me and my brother and it left me in awe! I have seen them again since at home in Ireland, in Enniskerry Co Wicklow and Donaghdee woods co meath, there i saw a whole nest of them!

I had jays in the trees opposite the window of my first year student halls. They were the only good thing about that year...

wonderful video! I saw the same exact thing yesterday while returning back home, on a big tree. Heard this loud noise and saw two jays screaming at magpies. First time I saw a jay, they're beautiful.

I was hearing this noise while sitting in a park today, I wondered what bird it was then it looked like it was being chased through the trees by Magpies

Great filming. How do you manage to keep the camera so steady while moving it slightly? Usually on other channels it jerks all around making it hard to watch.

Agreed. All Corvids are intelligent, interesting & entertaining birds plus the Jay has the added benefit of wonderful plumage 😀

Magpies do the exact same thing but they get more violent with the twigs. I walked past some fledglings once and it was the funniest thing I've ever seen a magpie do.

probably they have a nest in that tree... and probably they were removing the thorns to reach more quickly the nest in case of magpie attack (they eat eggs and little birds) just to avoid taking a thorn in a wing or in the body and not be able anymore to protect the nest... but this is just a theory, i know that the whole Corvidae family are tremendously smart...

Hello Rob! I am trying to find a good locations to film jays picking up acorns and hiding them - for a documentary. Would you have any suggestions? Thank you

And thickly wooded are should do. Play a call like this video to draw them into the chosen area and bait up.

Reasons why they may have been tearing of the thorns of the blackthorn (sloes) is probably to make them more comfortable to stand/sit on

Why are they called a mocking jay?
@RobRambler214
@RobRambler214 6 жыл бұрын
A Mocking Jay is not a real bird. The 'Hunger Games' author made the name up by combining Jabberjay (fictional) and Mockingbird (real).

I have two Jay birds nearby as well and I had a new pole bird feeder come today. Within ten minutes they were down and taking monkey nuts to eat. They do fight a lot with the magpies as the magpies are notorious for stealing things from other birds and killing their young too. This one here is lovely, it is warning off the other birds and telling them off.

@@carolwilkins7286 like a rattley laugh almost as opposed to a raucous shriek, I would say the jay is noisier when they shout though
