Hi ! Can you please post the written details of your trip? I am planning this same trip in Dec 2018- for example.. Irvine train to WA was this train... and the next leg was.. and then we had to change trains here and get on this train etc. Thank you!

Sorry I couldn't get back to you right away but it has been a very busy week. The trains I took from Irvine to Miami were as follows: Train 785 Pacific Surfliner - Irvine, CA to Santa Barbara, CA (see note below)4785 Thruway Bus Connection - Santa Barbara to Emeryville, CA (overnight see note below)Train 6 California Zephyr - Emeryville to Chicago, ILTrain 30 Capital Limited - Chicago to Washington DCTrain 97 Silver Meteor - Washington DC to Miami, FLAfter boarding Train 785 (5:49 pm) in Irvine I made the following connections: Bus 4785 in Santa Barbara, Train 6 in Emeryville, Train 30 in Chicago, and Train 97 in Washington DC. All connections were the same day as the arriving train/bus so no overnight stays ( in hotels) were required. One night was on the bus, 2 were on Train 6, and 1 each on Trains 30 and 97. Note: You can eliminate the night on the bus and speed the schedule up by 1 day if you take Train 4 the Southwest Chief directly from Los Angeles or Fullerton which are locations both served from Irvine by the frequent Pacific Surfliner trains. I took Train 6 because I wanted a roomette (sleeping car room) and they were sold out on Train 4. From Chicago on the trip is the same. Amtrak is very helpful and you can call them at 1-800-USA-RAIL if you need assistance. Good for you for making this trip and I hope you have a great time.
