Haven't yet read The Blade Artist but I reckon that Dead Man's Trousers is one of Irvine Welsh's best ever and is a great addition to the stories of the original boys in Trainspotting. And Bobby, what a legend.

Years ago I saw a real life Begbie in Endinburgh try his hand at stand up comedy. He was ex CCS like Begbie and even looked a bit like Robert Carlyle. The audience were laughing nervously more out of fear than anything.

Let's see: I don't deny that you can have your own vision of a local drunkard, with all his little peculiarities. I also don't deny that you can have your opinion of how Begbie might well have been, or how he should be. But the moment you adapt Welsh's Begbie, he cease to be Begbie.
