I grew up in Irvington in the 1950s and 60s. It was really a great place to grow up! I had lots of family and friends within walking distance of my house. I walked to school and we never had to worry about locking our doors. What a shame to see it as it is today! I went to Madison Avenue elementary school and attended St. Leo's Church. My family lived in Irvington and Newark for generations. No more.

I lived in Irvington back in 1975 - 1979. Back then, it was still majority white, but these were its last years. Wikipedia says that by 1980, Irvington was 40% black, by 1990, 70% black. When I lived in Irvington, there already were some places where it was better not to be after dark. The town still had two movie theaters, Castle on Clinton Ave. and Essex on Springfield Ave. Essex got torn down while I still lived in Irvington. Castle Theater, after changing a number of owners, went of of business in 2000. To this day Irvington has no movie theater. All the stores, except one, that were in Irvington in my day, have gone out of business. I dislike being in Irvington now because it is not safe. Even Newark is safer than Irvington!

I remember back in the 50’s, early 60’s when Irvington was all white. You barely even saw a black person there, unless they worked there, and Newark was the same. Then we came in and look what our people did to those cities. It’s a shame, and we wonder why white people don’t want to live around us. Hell... I don’t want to live around us.
@Lesj1426 жыл бұрын
Kylie_ 536 I understand what you’re saying, but I don’t think ptsd had much to do with the destruction of these cities. I believe it’s due to lack of education, low income, single parent households, and a complete lack of self pride. You could put these same people in a nice neighborhood right now and they would tear it down. You know I’m telling the truth. They look for any excuse to start a riot, and then burn their OWN town down, and then start looting... stealing cell phones, sneakers, hair, and big screen TVs. I hate to ask, but how often do you hear of any other race of people doing this? There’s no pride or logic, so again I ask, “who would want to live around them if they any way of escaping”, I wouldn’t. They create their own hell, then stand back and say, look what white man did to them. Then they ask the same whit man for welfare, food stamps, and section 8.
@Mr.White10-656 жыл бұрын
I live in the area and I agree with some of what you say, but I think it's about the mentality of the people in the community and not their skin color. There's white neighborhoods that look like shit too (I'm white btw). You can go into Maplewood NJ which isn't far from the "ghetto" and it's all half a million dollar homes, white picket fences and the majority of the people living there are black.
@Lesj1426 жыл бұрын
Brian Bianco I understand what you're saying. I live in a fairly decent neighborhood, a few blocks from Maplewood. I think you'll agree that these people in Maplewood are not suffering from a lack of education, low income, and mostly single parent households. And they surely aren't suffering from a lack of self pride. My girlfriend's son and his wife have a beautiful single family home there. He's big In real estate and his wife is a college professor. His own son is 22 and has one more year in college and has just landed a summer internship working for Bloomberg starting at $24 per hour. It just goes to show what people can do if they really try to better themselves and stop sitting back with their hand stuck out, blaming other people.

Back in the late 90s I used to get my hair braided on Stuyvesant Avenue. The salon consisted of 2 African braiders and a barber. When dudes would come in to get a haircut, I’d be prepared in the event they were coming to rob the place. The area was sooo bad that right before I knew they were on the verge of finishing my hair I’d call my boyfriend who lived in hillside - in broad daylight to make sure I got to my car safely whether it was parked in front of the shop or the next block over to follow me out of the area. For those of you complaining about this video only showing the shitty areas of Irvington I’m confused because Irvington is one big shithole!!!!

LoveXinfinity There were literally 5 or less decent blocks to live in Irvington. All were bordering another decent town like Maplewood or Hillside (at that time). I lived in a 1 family home, 2 car private driveway, big backyard and had a pretty decent childhood. However, I also had 2 loving parents that instilled qaulities and sense so I can admit I'm the exception. So sad to see the war torn territory it has become
@tashapasha29956 жыл бұрын
Daddy Bear eventually I started going to a new salon on the border of Maplewood a stones throw away from N.J. transit and it’s true as you approach the border of Maplewood it’s so much nicer and tame.... it’s like the vibe and energy changes in the blink of an eye. I used to date another dude (yes, in my younger days that was my thing, but shit has changed)who lived in Hillside and 2 streets over from him was the Newark border. He lived on a very nice street with very large old beautiful homes in a middle class working neighborhood. Then back in 2007/2008 they made his street part of the Newark address. The neighborhood is still very nice, but the fact remains it’s Newark. People side eye me when I say parts of Newark are a beautiful city.

Was like 89' @ Myrtle Junior High when dudes decided to start walking up to random people trying to take their jaws off. I lived here for about 3 years & it was straight wild. Remember a group of about 5-7 pre-teens who had a lot of older cats shook to the point when you seen them walking down the block you go in your house or hide anywhere you could because if you got spotted by them you were definitely getting victimized. The Marshalls were the spot back then & seen some crazy stuff go down there as well.

Such a shame these homes have been neglected like this, the architecture to me looks better than most new homes today, a little gentrification and streets like these would look amazing

i practically lived in irvington all my life, somewhere between the good and bad area, (since there are no good ones)2002-2016 it was when i started goin to hs when i spent less time there and more in maplewood. its crazy how big it is and how many areas i aint know about that much

I grew up one town west in Maplewood. By the Maplewood loop where the bus turn around was. My mom would take me when i was 5. We would walk to the bus and ride up to Irvington. Go shopping on Springfield ave. Almost to Newark. Would always hit the 5 and 10....was beutiful. That was around 1960 or 61. Then in the mid 70s I worked construction and would get laid off in the winter. Had to go stand in line at unemployment right across from the A&P...then there was Motionz night club. Kind of an underground rock/punkish place that smelled like piss...but good bands and cheap costs..probably no place for a white guy down there now...

@backgroundni99a7 жыл бұрын
Nah. Weirdly enough Irvington is hood but it's more dirty than hood. It's like you said, they don't care. Even the nice houses on Stuyvesant have an elegant element of rachetness to them. Oddly enough one of the streets he was probably on is South Orange Ave and it connects to South Orange which is one of the best towns to live. Sexy girls, business people, young people, rich people. All 10 minutes from this. I MET WHOOPIE GOLDBERG on South Orange Ave!! It was dark. Me and my sister made small talk with her and didn't realize it til she left. My mom told me it was her too because they spoke under a street light. In my opinion tho, East Orange and Newark is worst. Camden has the statistics but shit goes down in these two places and no matter how much you are in the house, you'll see some. I remember getting up for breakfast and Pokemon when I was ten, soon as I reached for my TV niggaz were next to my open window talking about bodies. I stopped and touched nothing until they left. 10 minutes.

@amuzseme94466 жыл бұрын
No that’s not Newark and I also agree that there are nicer places right down the street that could have been shown. The problem with Irvington is the lack of money. Irvington has been trying to give certain parts of their town to Newark for revitalization for years.
@faithblair36226 жыл бұрын
Amuzseme well Irvington just made $1million dollars in property . And working on get a Starbucks 🤷🏽♀️ so
@amuzseme94466 жыл бұрын
The money from property is a drop in the bucket compared to what needs to be done to revitalize that part of town. Also how are they pushing for a Starbucks when you have that much garbage up the street. Clean it up first and then push for businesses to come there.

Irvington has a lot of potential it just needs to be cleaned up and funded properly.

@curtisjones4006 жыл бұрын
James Mcnell-When you left New Jersey 40 years ago things were slowly changing for the better. The reason things are not better is because in the mid 1980's crack cocaine hit the streets. Crack cocaine destroyed alot of communities and most still have not fully recovered.

There are some nice house that are boarded up . Most place they raised the rent high so you cant afford to fix it up. They want a new developer to come in raised the rent .Then you moved.Most hoods are about a nationality and culture. The government set it up who works, school and where they lived. Call Sundown towns. Over 20 - 50 years many of these places should've been fixed but because scrumplous politician and business. If we keep a community working then they have dollars in their own hoods they can buy land, homes, car and etc.
