Looking forward to following your progress, especially with the backyard. You could easily spend $15k on landscaping, patio reno, and bbq station alone, so it will be amazing if you're able to stay within budget. Good luck!

Easily! The backyard will definitely have to be in phases as well.

“Slow design” - I learned another new expression. I agree that it’s a great approach for this home, given the magnitude of upgrades it will need due to its age. It’s cool that you are developing your vision already, well knowing that you’ll have to make adjustments as you go along. Without knowing the expression, slow design is what I did for my home, over the course of 20 years as I could afford it. It allowed me to apply learnings as I went along, but also brought some inconsistencies as things were no longer available or outdated by the time I got to the next step. I’m curious to see, if you can stay within your right budgets. Looking forward to what we can learn from watching!

I love the house! Mid century isn’t my favorite house style but I do like this house a lot. It has such a home-y feel. I look forward to seeing the updates over time! I’m not a fan of tile, but I understand replacing the floors is a lot to pay. The floors seem like something you can wait on and save up for later. But the carpets are definitely a must to replace (a lot of allergens in there). I’m so happy for you. I think your kids will love growing up here

Jennie, you could use try and get used artificial turf. There is a whole industry out there of people who remove used turf from football fields and sell it used. You can paint the white marks they make on it for sports use, or just buy enough to cut the white markings off. Just an idea.

The pine tree definitely needs to go, those needles are endless... We have a fixer upper in the Northeast and most of the budget has been to tree removal, I can't wait for these projects for ideas!

I would pick wood for the floor :) I love that office space but I absolutely get your point. I think I would paint it ”egg white” or ”glacier white” to make it easy for the eyes. The shaded part for the outdoor area sounds brilliant.

You could cut down the pine tree and make a cool piece of furniture for the yard or something. Maybe even something for inside the house. Can't get a lower carbon footprint then that 😃

It was interesting to hear your plans and ideas, thanks. I also can paint quite well but hate it 😆. Your house will be really nice! Here in Finland getting that kind of a tree removed costs about $300 (by the professional with insurances). But they would leave the roots to the ground.
@JennieJSullins

@@JennieJSullins Yikes 😬! Here at around $150 you get that size tree cut down and the trunk chopped in 3' pieces. But everything would be left to the premises. At around $350-400 you would also get the branches taken away and the the stump removed. But this could be more if the trailer can't be driven close to the tree (then maybe $500). Here in Finland we have so much forests and forestry is a common thing so that probably affects the prices. Try to negotiate the best price you can. Tell them that otherwise you will order the job from Finland 😂.

I’ve been a viewer of Ben’s for a while now. I think this channel will be great as well. I love home remodeling. We live in SoCal too so it’s nice to see someone going through the process on a California budget. Are you renting this new house out? Or are you going to live in it?

Habitat for humanity if you have one near by is awesome for just random stuff found cool art pieces their but I've also found lights for cheap and fans. Downside being that it's rare they have a bunch of one item so no way to have matching fans through out the house going there.
